Made myself a midnight pony drawing. She is dubbed Rain Drop the Meteorologist biggrin.png

I'm getting better with my shading, but now I just need to get better at drawing ponies in a pose that's not the standard profile position :/

I call her adorable! img-1369822-1-UNZJLhS.png

Okay, creepy exclamations aside, this is really well done. Really clean and shaded well, and the proportions seem to be in order.

My only advice for more complex posing is to master pony anatomy as best as you can first. It's easier to pose when you have an idea what something looks like from different angels and such, and pulling from your own knowledge is always better looking than having to copy from a reference image.

Pony anatomy... Is there a class for that? XD

I guess the only way for me to really get good at drawing at different angles and poses is to draw even more. Summer can't come soon enough >.<

Interesting, a weather pony who isn't a pegasus.

I like this drawing though, you have a drawing style that is very reminiscent of the show.

What color is she? My guess is white or light grey with a dark blue mane.

I really like it, I have been trying to break out of the stock positions too. The biggest problem i have, are porportions and shadeing with pencils. Which i think are great in you work btw. Keep up dat art!

impressive . youre shadings good. its a well layed out picture, but the one thing id change is the shape of the head and neck. there disproportionate . unless that was on purpose. in which case good job. ( i realize this may sound like sarcasm but it isnt lol trust me )

Lookin' good. Also looks like you're developing your own style. You're going in the right direction kid. Just to tell ya, show-accurate pony fanart is not always the right way to develop skills. Either way, thats a great drawing. You should focus on adorableness, as it seems to be your ability :3

My intention for color was a white coat with a cool colored mane to fit with the rain on her cutie mark. Blue is probably the most accurate color that suites her though :D

As a side note, thanks everyone for the positive feedback! I wasn't really expecting this good of a response for this drawing ^-^

You do realize there is already a pony named Raindrops, right? :P

It's a great drawing though - I need to move forward in my traditional artwork as well.

The drawing is so SO adorable, that I could just hug it every day for the rest of my life!

That sounded just a tiny girly. What do I care?

In any case, the drawing is well made, at least in my opinion, and like I said. I COULD JUST HUG IT FOREVER!

Or turn it evil

because I can.

But I would NEVER! So cute.

In some sort of defense, I did name her Rain Drop instead of Raindrops XD
Eh, I'm not very creative when it comes to names anyway lol. Plus the chances of coming up with a name that ISN'T taken are very slim sad.png . Thanks for the compliment though! I really do appreciate it :D

I shall study them greatly and pass the pony anatomy class! MUAHAHAHAHA! Thanks for the link :3

I like to try to aim for a cute or adorable look to a pony to feed my love for them even more laugh.png

Thanks greatly for your comment though! I'm really happy that people are enjoying the drawing so much :D

Please keep in mind that the following is ideas and suggestions, they're NOT the 100% perfect, set in stone way of drawing ponies. There is no right nor wrong way of drawing what you enjoy. When it comes to 'anatomy' for drawing ponies, I'd highly suggest visiting Pony Reference Booru. It has a good collection of reference shots from the show and will cut down on time surfing through an episode or Google images.

Now for the critique on the picture itself, the majority of things that needed a bit of tweaking has already been said by other members. What really needs a bit of adjusting though is the shading, or values. Now, please keep in mind that I myself am still learning the wonders of values and it's especially hard to give shadows to a pony when the show doesn't have any good examples. The way I've learned is via Life Drawing, from reference, the show doesn't have true reference thus the conundrum. But I'm not here to rant, I want to help ya out!

When I'm viewing Raindrop, I get an idea that she has top light yet the current values conflict this idea. If we compare her hind leg (the leg @ the flank) to the source of light, would there really be shadow there? In a completely dark environment it's possible, but light is reflective and when you're outside this shadow is usually not as pronounced. A simple fix is to erase the shadow at her flank/hind leg. Her legs beyond her are also shaded weirdly, it's can be confusing to the viewer or just make the image look a bit more flat overall. We're not doing realistic shading so we can get away with shading it as one solid.

Here's a visual reference in case what I said didn't make sense or was confusing. Remember, this are just suggestions and not the concrete way of how to approach your values. I am in no way a master of drawing ponies myself but I hope at least some of this has been of some use to you. For further studies in pony values, I'd visit the Reddit Basic Pony Shading and Lighting topic to get a greater understanding of how to play with values.

Overall though, you've done a good job and have even experimented with values. Drawing in itself is an experiment, keep at it! eeyesplz.png?1

If you do not GO after what you want, you'll never have it. If you do not ASK, the answer will always be NO.

I think I understand what you're explaining to me. I took a look at the fixed image you linked and I'm somewhat understanding what you're talking about. I think I confused shading with adding dimension (explains why I added shading elements to areas that would curve away from the viewer, such as the sides of the legs). Ill give what you told me a go and see how it works out for me! Thanks for the help!
