Equestria Girls Plot-Holes

So I've read through all of this thread except for the giant WoT's going around about how magic works, and I'm really surprised no one asked this question.

Why did Twilight burst in with an AK, fire warning shots in the air, demand the crown, and leave? Ok, maybe she wouldn't know where to find a gun, but the point stands. There were plenty of times where she knew exactly where the crown was, and could've just taken it and left.

Good question, but that would mean Twilight would have been acting pretty out of character (out of her mind crazy) for her to run into a school full of her peers with a gun or any weapon of that sort. Not to mention I doubt Hasbro would allow that to be included for a movie that's rated E for everyone.

For one thing, she probably doesn't even know about the concept of firearms since it's a piece of technology never introduced in Equestria, so how would she really know about it in the first place much less know how to fire one?

More accurately it would have made more sense for her just to do what SS did to her, steal the crown back and switch it for a fake one. Since she didn't do that or voice reasons why it wasn't a great idea, your point does stand about her just taking the crown and leaving ASAP.

Oh, yeah. Of course the whole AK thing was a joke, but there were so many points where she knew where the crown was and could've done something about it in an in character way. She could've snatched the box from VP Luna with the help of her friends and ran off. She could've just ran through the portal when she had spike and the crown and SS was just threatening to hit Rainbow Dash in the face with a sledgehammer.

That's weird. I saw the topic title EQGirls Plot Holes and there's no R34 pictures with close-ups here at all, just discussions of the movie and its flaws.

sorry that was juvenile

But yeah there were a lot of flaws in the story with this movie. If you sit and look at all the things that Twi should have done you'll really come to the conclusion to not like the movie so it's easier to go with the flow and play innocent bystander to the lack of logic in it..

Oh don't worry. Some of us do. If I ever have a movie marathon of B movies like Sharknado, I'm putting this in there. I was laughing so hard at the end when SS turned into a demon.

It's less on the whole bluff and more on the reality of the threat and Twilight's logic.

Threat:

SS would smash the portal unless Twilight gave her the crown.

Reality:

Hammer would pass through the portal, probably smashing head first into one of the mane 5 on the other side. Ouch.

Bluff:

Twilight says her universe would be alright without her. The human universe needs her here to fight SS.

Reality:

Without her, the elements of harmony would be useless and any foreseeable threat would be met unchallenged, putting Equestria into further jeopardy. Twilight would have been smart enough to realize the futility of the threat first, considering she is the nerdy girl.

It's like a rolling derp derp moment. Twilight should have just interrupted with a renegade action, throwing a buttload of muffins at her face! That would have made more sense and it would have been more entertaining.

Following your train of thought, The bigger question would be how SS procured a sledge hammer in the first place? I don't think those are common tools you would find in a high school of all places and we saw nothing of construction or renovation going on in the school. That and how she managed to acquire it that fast between the time of Twilight winning the crown and chasing Snip & Snail to the school entrance.

nah i think the elements of harmony is but one of many defense used in equestria(as stated by cadence), losing it might be bad but not the end of the world though

No it wouldn't be the end per say, but I'd be more inclined to believe that Equestria would have a very tough time combating against any future villains. The mane 6 have been involved in all the major threats to ponykind, which makes them somewhat of a national elite police force. Threat comes in, they get called in to respond, threat is neutralized, job well done girls, go home/celebrate. They still are essential to the defense of Equestria though regardless.

I honestly thought when I first heard of Sharknado that it was a big joke, that was until I actually saw it. I have never seen such a movie so bad that it's so good, it almost reached "The Room"'s level of silliness.

Speaking of sharks, SS turning into a demon was the point where I felt the movie jumped the shark. I was willing to buy alot of things about this movie as it really was created more so as an obligation rather than an actual desire to further the story of MLP, but I kept thinking about funny it would be if other characters used the crown instead. If evil intentions turned you into a demon and good intentions a pony-human hybrid, what if you had a laid back approach? 10 bucks you would turn into the Jeff Lebowski, after all he is the Dude.

I admit setting up the story they wanted to tell required some contrivances, namely why Sunset doesn't merely point out that Twilight isn't a student. All the same, I don't let any of it bother me. All movies have "strings" and, while in this movie those strings are little too visible, my suspension of belief pulled through just fine.

  • 4 weeks later...

I know this is a necro, but I only saw the movie recently.

A number of things bothered me, but most have been addressed elsewhere.

The one I haven't seen is

Why did they chose to send Twilight Sparkle? I guess someone else above suggested a violent approach, but the reply was that it wasn't in her character. Ok, fine. But that's exactly why you don't send TS.

Why not send a pony who still has their element? If the elements give you god like powers, send a pragmatist or an aggressive pony like AJ or RD. TS is good for learning quickly and blending in, but the ponies don't really have a stake in the human world, so there's no reason to bother. Just go in, find crown, take crown by force, leave.

Or, why not just send Discord? Have him prove his reformation or something. If he's uncooperative, you can always break the mirror and seal him there. I assume that his powers still work in the human world, or they would have thrown his statue in the portal and broken the mirror long ago.

It just seems like nobody was thinking. Twilight is a high level political figure now, and, as such, someone who's importance sets them apart from a task like this. She also represents a significant investment in terms of Celestia, not something to be risked lightly. What are they going to say if she screws up? "Oh we sent over one of your rulers because we thought that a better idea than sending someone more aggressive and disposable?" If they're willing to risk rulers like that, why not send over Celestia?

If they HAD to send Twilight, why couldn't at least one of these characters have gone too? Spike went, so why not replace spike with Discord, AJ, or RD as above? Clearly reality wouldn't be torn asunder, since it wasn't torn asunder when just spike went. Why was it an all or nothing thing (All your friends go to help, or none of them do)?

There's a lot of other things that really confuse me about this movie. I can think up excuses for some of them, some require characters, like Sunset, to be completely incompetent, but this one just really gets to me.

Who opened the portal to the human world in the first place? I mean, why would anypony purposely build a portal to an alternate dimension?

Starswirl the Bearded was into some serious crap. He invented time travel spells, and a garbled half-finished spell that swapped cutie marks from one pony to another. He's like the Discworld's Bloody Stupid Johnson! You never know what you get with either!

Maybe the portal was made by Starswirl the bearded.  He does seem to be into dangerous magic, like mentioned above.  As for the human counterpart of Sunset Shimmer I assumed the pony version murdered her & hid/buried the body somewhere.  After all it would be a perfect murder, no missing person after all.  & as far as the Human Twilight, I guess she never had a reason to start going to the same school as the human Applejack and the others.  Lots of plot holes and things that made no sense, indeed.

I also wonder why the portal wasn't kept in perhaps a steel cabinet.  Who knows what may wonder in from the other world.  Looks like not even a guard was posted.  I'd have thought they'd do something similar to what they did with the stargate in the episodes I've seen of stargate sg-1 to stop someone from just activating and wondering in through the stargate.  Safer by far to keep it locked securely in a steel box slightly larger then the mirror with Celestia with the only key to open it, or even safer  no lock, just make 2 empty halves of a box slightly larger then the mirror with say 3-6 inch steel walls.  Put the mirror inside one half, have Celestia with her magic, or some of the strong looking guards, lift the other half onto the first half, and have Celestia seal both halves together.   I'm sure someone of her magic power could undo it as she desired.  And have a guard or 2 posted nearby, for added security.

Some of the plot holes I wondered about were the whole Sunset asking Twilight what happens when you bring an element of harmony into a alternate world, how come no one questioned the main 6 with pony tails, wings and ears, how come Twilight never went to classes and of course the whole CMCs and other younger ponies being in high school.

I just finished watching "Equestria Girls" again.  A few plot holes stuck out in my mind this time around.  If Sunset Shimmer stole the crown in the middle of the night, why was Fluttershy sitting next to the statue at that time?  Also, why didn't Princess Celestia have guards posted at the mirror during the three-day period that it was active?  And if the crown doesn't have any power by itself in Equestria, then wouldn't it have stopped working as soon as Sunset Shimmer took it back through the portal?  Wouldn't her plan to take over Equestria immediately fail?

(These have probably all been mentioned already.)

Twilight should have broken into Celestia's office and took the crown. She was already breaking the law/rules by sleeping in the school while using the books for a bed and she had to also go into the cafeteria to get something for dinner.

There's a lot of other things that really confuse me about this movie. I can think up excuses for some of them, some require characters, like Sunset, to be completely incompetent, but this one just really gets to me.

Perhaps their reasoning went something along these lines:

Discord is not reformed enough to be trusted with this task. There is no guarantee his powers would work, since the human world lacks magic. He would not be able to blend in, as Sunset Shimmer clearly had. Even if they were unaware ponies become human in that realm, they might have reasoned that Sunset managed it because she was a pony, so sending a pony rather than a Draconequus made sense.

The other elements were stated to be powerless without Twilight's crown, and would offer no benefit. It's her crown, she should retrieve it. Celestia is even less disposable than Twilight is. Spike wasn't sent, he made a break for it of his own volition. All 6 of them going in would have much more of an effect than just Spike, which is why Twilight was supposed to go alone.

The crown was already lost, and there was a time limit, after which return was impossible. Risking trapping the other Elements in the other realm unnecessarily, even given the fact they were depowered, would be foolish.

There plenty of ways to justify things if you need to.

They never said her Crown was powerless without the other Elements, they said the other Elements were powerless without the Crown. And the events of the movie clearly showed the Crown was powerful enough magic on its own.

But they never said that the element of magic was special, quite the opposite, everyone talked about "an element of harmony" in another world, suggesting the effects were similar across all of them. Even if the magic element was special, it doesn't explain why twilight had to go, plenty of more aggressive/qualified ponies with more direct problem solving skills are available, element or not.

Since the elements were depowered, risking the other elements was effectively risking nothing, as they noted, in equestria, the elements are powerless when they are apart, and since the elements are critical to defense of the country, they should use any and all means at their disposal to get them back, even and especially other elements, if they will help.

And blending in is a non-issue, the ponies shouldn't care at all about what happens to the human world or how they are perceived there (by the end of the movie, they cause significant damage anyway). However, their nation is at considerable risk without the elements, so they should have been more concerned with getting the element back asap than with keeping the humans from realizing the ponies walk amongst them.

We've seen that the crown is powerless without the other elements (in equestria), they've stated on numerous occasions that the elements don't work separately, and they proved useless against discord when Twilight was the only one trying in return of harmony part 2. They were very specific in that it was the bringing the element into another world which allowed it to grant god like powers.

And all I said was that if they could've additionally sent spike, why not send another pony, rather than spike. I understand all 6 couldn't go, but apparently 2 could.

I can't accept that Twilight's ownership (does she own it?) of the crown necessitates her retrieval of it. The crown is critical to the defense of the country, and they acknowledge that it threatens the other world. They need to get this back or all the ponies in Equestria are in jeopardy.

Also, did everyone just wait at the mirror the whole 3 days? Don't they have things to do? Especially with the country at risk with no elements of harmony? Twilight made them wait a whole extra hour just so she could dance :S What if everyone was dying cause some evil had appeared, or Discord went wild, or Luna decided to attempt to coup Celestia again? That hour could've been critical. Can you imagine how that would play out, like one of those interconnected endings, where everyone's just trying to hold everything off long enough so Twilight can bring back the crown, and she decides to dance. She had  no idea what was going on in equestria when she agreed to that...

They thought they could only send one pony. So Twilight was chosen because its her crown. Even if Spike went along without messing everything up, they didn't know that at the time. They had one pony to send, of course it would be Twilight.

Saying that because the other Elements were powerless makes the risk of losing them immaterial is incorrect. Imagine a scenario in which Twilight manages to get her crown and return at the last second, but is forced to leave one of the other Elements stranded for 30 moons. In that case, Twilight getting her crown back would be pointless, since the Elements still wouldn't be working without all being accounted for.

Blending in is not a non-issue. She needed to get her crown back, and blending in would certainly help more with that than standing out would. A big scene is precisely what they should wish to avoid in order to get the crown back as soon as possible. It didn't turn out like that, of course, but the idea makes sense. Besides, everything else I said about Discord still applies... he's untrustworthy, and his magic wouldn't have worked any better than Twilight's magic.

Exactly what effect bringing an element of harmony to an alternate world would have is never actually addressed. When Twilight admits she doesn't know, Sunset Shimmer just insults her ignorance and walks off. Luna also never says much beyond that the crown "can be used to harm the inhabitants of the other world". I guess you could call that a plothole, if you wish, but it certainly wasn't specified.

The ending shows that the Element of Magic is special. Connecting to alternate versions of the ponies was sufficient for the crown to activate, with just as much power (apparently) as when they used it against Nightmare Moon. The other Elements were not present, the other ponies were not present. In fact, it gave the girl's pony characteristics. Where did that come from, if not from the Crown itself?

I agree, though, Twilight stopping to dance was pretty stupid, especially since she walks back into the mirror mere seconds before the portal closes. How It Should Have Ended would no doubt make Twilight smack face-first into the now non-functioning portal. But they had to have their big closing dance scene after building it up so much, so I'm inclined to forgive that as Fridge Logic.

I'm not saying the movie is perfect, or that there are no plotholes. There are plenty, I just think some of the ones you pointed out are not entirely unjustifiable.

So Twilight takes up a bad habit of procrastinating during the movie. This is what happens when Twilight doesn't have her checklist to keep herself on track. She just loses it.
