You know, I actually kinda have a hard time getting feels from Luna's banishment. Headcanon time;

 

 

 

She vowed that she would shroud the land in eternal night. Reluctantly, the elder sister harnessed the most powerful magic known to ponydom: the Elements of Harmony. Using the magic of the Elements of Harmony, she defeated her younger sister, and banished her permanently in the moon.

Yeah, also, the craters on the Lunar surface made the shape of Nightmare Moon while she was trapped, and then disappeared when she escaped. So I really, really think she wasn't on the moon, but her soul was imprisoned in it. Both of those things very strongly indicate it.

 

Thought? Horcrux. The moon is an entity tied to Luna so much, that if she dies, her soul will go there. So Celestia didn't shoot Luna at the moon, no, Celestia killed Luna's Nightmare Moon's body, and her soul thus went to the Moon until her body could re-form (notice in S1E1, she appears from a cloud of mist? Yeah. She formed her body back).

 

Also, it wasn't Woona, or Luna that went to the Moon. It was the bitter, malicious Nightmare Moon who wanted to bring eternal darkness.

 

You know who I really feel sorry for?

 

Celestia. Betrayed by her own sister, and forced to do that to her or lose her own life, and all the lives of her subjects. She's immortal, all the ponies she knows live and die like gerbils, but the one individual she can really be equal with, the one being on her level who she can be with forever, who has been with her forever as her closest friend; a friend that won't die on her and leave her alone forever, is Luna. The only one who shares her memories, who is from her time, who has known her for so long, and who she can be with for most her life.

 

And then Luna grows jealous, and tries to kill her and destroy their kingdom, hates her. Betrayed by the one pony she could really be with, her own sister she loved, and all the while, the back of her mind says; you could have prevented this. This is your fault. You didn't love her enough.

 

Lost parents? Lost a friend? Celestia had only one thing to begin with: her sister. She's already lost everypony else, outliving them all, and knows full well she'll outlive anyone else she meets by thousands of years. Luna was the only pony who could stay with her. But then she betrayed her...

 

 

Even then, though, we learn that it was an external darkness that took Luna's fury and transformed her into Nightmare Moon. So there's even tragedy on that side, too. In the Nightmare Night episode, Luna says "we could not be happier" about being freed from Nightmare Moon's grasp.

 

But it's a big, important difference to note that Celestia banished Nightmare Moon, not Luna, into the moon, not onto it.

Heh, I have some old soviet hats like that... I never felt too bad about it, I mean, the Soviet Union collapsed, and what respect should I give a civilization that killed three times as many innocent people as the Nazis ever did? I've kind of thought of the hats as an interesting memoir, to how even the greatest civilizations on Earth are just sandcastles, that at some time, will be washed away by the tides of time, and those ancient powerful symbols of fear, might, and authority, become decorative trinkets with no meaning other than "souvenir".

 

But now I feel kinda bad about having those hats, seeing what they mean... Even the guys fighting for the evil empire are just humans, other people, forced into the battlefield.

Lightning Dust needs some love. She seems to have understood her mistakes a little afterward, I think, as indicated by her little salute to Rainbow Dash as she walked off in shame... I really want to see her come 'round. People who are jerks are in a sad, pitiful state...
