gaming Origin is not the worst digital distribution center

Now that we've gotten that out of the way...

Don't get me wrong, Origin is dreadful to work with.  It makes even the most simple thing a complete pain to do.  However, there are three things I see as big positives on the program:

  1. They implement frequent discounts (finally).
  2. You can order physical games to be shipped to your home.
  3. If you have the CD key, you can download the game for free.'

These three things at least save it from being the gold metal winning ass of the digital market.  And the new bottom rung digital retail system?  Well that's none other than:

First of all, the prices aren't even modded to match physical retail, let alone beat it.  That's right, despite digital retail being cheaper for Microsoft than physical retail, they charge more for downloading games.  The program is also constantly holding content hostage and annoying you to get a gold membership, which is in no way worth it.  And then Microsoft gave a big middle finger to independent developers.  Even the guy that made "Minecraft" is upset with them.  Hell, even Nintendo is upset that they turned their back on indies, because "independent developers need all the exposure they can get".

Congratulations, Microsoft, you managed to make EA look good on the virtue of not being Microsoft.

Origin was never the worst, XB Live and Games for Windows Live has that covered entirely. U-Play has some irritating DRM issues still but GFWL was just utterly dreadful. Origin is pretty mediocre, it's only recently decided to have discounts and sales and their game library isn't particularly great.

There are 3 reasons as to why Origin will never be viewed as the best distribution centre.

1. It's not Steam
2. It's run by EA

3. It's not Steam

Old thread is old but still...

I wouldn't mind EA Origin if it was an option for those who wanted something other than Steam.  Like it works and behaves just like Steam with all the other game publishers in there.  However Origin is hogging all the new EA Games and the GUI is not user friendly.

Well, I myself have had bad experience with Origin. I got Battlefield 3 and then they stole it from me. I tried to contact them, but there really was no option. I guess many would be angry how they often rip people off. It still isn't a company that tries to deal with its flaws or help their consumers if there is a problem.

Because Ubisoft has done a good job of making one that's significantly worse

Also because EA's actually done a decent job at improving Origin

Well Steam is consistantly digging it's own little hole so not being Steam will probably be a big plus in a few years. I know I've already stopped buying stuff from there and moved almost completely to GoG. Can't wait for Galaxy!

There are basically two types of digital distribution services.  First you have the likes of Steam, GOG and GamersGate which attract users by offerings discounts, automatic patching, built in multiplayer matchmaking, cloud storage, etc. as well as a convenient storefront with a wide variety of games all with the intent of making the user actually want to purchase games through the store because its so cheap and convenient.

And then you have "services" like Origin, U-play, Games for Windows Live, etc. that nobody actually wants to use, but hold hostage popular titles like Battlefield 3 or Far Cry 3.  The only reason people even use these services is that the only way to play Battlefield 3 is to use Origin, otherwise they would avoid the service like the plague.  Notice that these services almost never offer third party software, its just something you are forced to endure by a soulless marketing department to play the games you want to play.  It is a hideous practice and it needs to end.

In many ways this reminds me of console exclusives, another practice that needs to die horribly.  People should be allowed to run their games on the hardware platform of their choice using the digital distributor of their choice, rather than having to jump through all these hoops just to play the game you want to play.  It is these types of practicing that sometimes make me wonder if the world would be a better place if everyone who worked in marketing would just up and die.
