Because let us face it, If they do it Half of the bronies will start screaming "Fanservice" Or "Pandering". look at how many haters Magic Duek got. Also Some bronies will rage if the background ponies weren't what they expected them to be Like If Dinky wasnt Derpys daughter Many Hardcore Derpy fans will rage or even quit the show. Hell Some bronies think that Lyra and Bonbon Are couples in canon and will call Hasbro a "Homophobe" If they were just friends. You might say that We bronies arent that bad but your wrong, maybe not on this site but there are thousands of bronies who will be butthurt for whatever reason IF a Background Pony got an Important Role. so let us just leave them as background ponies and not demand The Writers for something that could Bring a lot of rustled jimmies.

These fans are the types of fans we dont WANT in the fandom, so a BGP episode would weed out some of the unwanted bronies and leave the fandom in a better condition and better public standing

Wait, wait, wait just a sec. What was so horrible about Magic Duel? What does Magic Duel have to do with background ponies?

Nevertheless, this is one of the rare subjects I'm indifferent about.

I think he was refering to Trixie.  Trixie isn't a background pony.  She's considered to be a secondary character.  A better example would have been The Last Roundup and the whole Derpy fiasco.

I don't really remember Magic Duel getting hate from background ponies not getting important roles but, it got hate for being a bad episode sometimes. The reason they don't give background ponies important roles is because, their main focus is the Mane Six ponies but the background ponies don't really have much to work with.

There are bronies who will get butthurt over anything this show gives us.

  • Not enough songs? Have some!
  • Too many songs? Well f**k
  • Too little [insert pony]? Let's change that!
  • Too much [insert pony]? /ragequit

The writers giving us a nod every now and then through a background pony is actually pretty cool. That doesn't mean they have to have an important role. Besides, if you're gonna leave this amazing fandom because a background pony is given just a few seconds in the spotlight or because something isn't headcannon with you, and not because of something that happened throughout the years, then perhaps you were never a fan to begin with.

Agreed! You can never please everyone.

Another reason is probably that the reason background ponies are so likeable is that we can give them roles that we have made up, and the show doesn't need to ruin that.

Another problem is that if you give EVERY pony a role you get into an oversaturation of characters. Too many characters that need speaking roles and it turns into "everyone needs a line" syndrome where they'll waste precious storytelling time getting a reaction out of every pony that now has speaking roles in the show.

There's also another problem with character oversaturation: When you put too much into getting everyone a role every character, including the important ones, start having less thought into them because when they have less time on screen they get less time to develop as a character which ends up putting them into an immovable archetype where they'll say some quirky and characteristic sentence that does not delve into them as characters or deviate from that making them essentially cardboard with a voice.

@@Discordian,

I'm all with you there. Plenty of comedies and shows I've seen sadly have such predictable characters.

But once in a while, Derpy saying something funny never hurts anything, so long as it's kept in moderation.

Well of course, a line or two doesn't hurt but when everyone starts getting lines or everyone starts becoming more important than they are that's when "just one line" turns into every character regardless of their relevance to the story of the episode.
