FruitRiver 355 August 13, 2013 Share August 13, 2013 (edited) Don't get me wrong, I love Pokemon, The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, all that jazz, and I want those series to keep running. But I want new games. No, not Mario in a slightly changed invironment. New, new games. Like Okami and Solatorobo. Is anyone else tired of the store shelves cluttered with sequel after sequel and no new games? Mario Party, Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros one to one million? Why can't they just make new characters in new environments with new gameplay and new everything sometimes? Every game was new once. Once Zelda was revelutionary with its gameplay. Now nothing is new. I think the reason they never make new games is because they won't sell well. I mean Solatarobo was a great game, but didn't sell very well. Whenever a new game sells well they just make sequels for it instead of new series. And its not only games, but game consoles too. Take the Wii U for example. What is so different about it? HD graphics, a different controller. Thats it. Theres nothing revelutionary or new about it. And the Xbox 360 sounds like its better then the Xbox One will be. I did like the 3DS though, that system actually improved a lot! And it has the best Animal Crossing game on it I never play Xbox or the Playstation but it looks like the same thing is happening with them. All they have are COD and countless other shooter game sequels. (at least The Last of Us is new.) So Nintendo, if your reading this, please stop rapidly shooting Mario, Sonic, Zelda, and Pokemon games that started forever ago and make some new games. Moonlight 7,291 August 13, 2013 Share August 13, 2013 (edited) Actually, you would find some very different games from the norm, you just have to look for them. I love Pokemon and Sonic and such, but some different ideas wouldn't necessarily hurt. BUT...the Silent Hill franchise tried to do something different but were met with severe fan backlash. People just don't want to take any risks and continue along the safe road. Some "different" games than the norm include: Alan Wake Mirror's Edge Portal Indigo Prophecy and games like that. It's like music, sure some may be bad or be too similar to another, but if you look hard enough, you never know...you could find some gems. Rainblow H. Ash 5,091 August 13, 2013 Share August 13, 2013 I think Wheatley has a point, especially with the music comparison. I always take the statement "Music nowadays sucks!" with a grain of salt. The thing is there has always been sucky music, you just have to dig for the good stuff, which will last forever and leave the bad stuff in the dust. I do understand being tired of sequels, but I think there are enough good games coming out to keep pace. I think one issue is that I'm more of a PC gamer so there's a crap ton of games out there for me to play while good games on consoles can get lost in a sea of either bland titles or sequels. So I guess the best advice is just to hold out for good games and not waste your time focusing on sequels. That's what I've been doing. Another thing to do is to skip a few games in a series and pick it back up. That way the gameplay stays fresh and any improvements they've made sequel to sequel build up, if you get my drift. 2 #bringbackmerriwetherwillaims
Scootalove 10,692 August 13, 2013 Share August 13, 2013 Well, there are other games that can provide good sequels and sometimes those sequels become very popular. There are many games that deserve a sequel, while games that earned one had a disappointing truth when they came out. You could find some good game sequels. Bhending the Rules 697 August 13, 2013 Share August 13, 2013 This is another way that video games are becoming more like movies lately. The costs involved with making Triple A titles are getting absurd, to the point where several games that have sold millions of units in this sluggish economy have been deemed financial disappointments, even though selling millions of units this late in the console generation with all of the audience interest in the new consoles coming this winter is kind of miraculous. The same thing is happening in Hollywood. Movie budgets are spiraling out of control, with studios spending ridiculous sums on franchise fare that is deemed to be the safe method for getting more ticket sales. Quite a few of those movies are getting clobbered at the box office.
PonyBoy15 428 August 13, 2013 Share August 13, 2013 Oh my, lets talk about Pokemon. Being a 90s kid, i grew up with pokemon and loved it to death. Most favorite being the Johto Saga. Now pokemon is at its 6th generation. Generation 2 came out about 3 years after generation 1. Which I think was around 2000/2001 here in the states. Generation 3 came out in 2003 here in the states. The Generation 4 in 2007. Generation 5 in 2011 now look, generation 6 only 2 years after. I honestly don't like pokemon x and y too much. It's either im getting to old or nintendo's ideas are not getting better. I was disapointed with the ice cream pokemon in generation 5 like really? I could come up with better. What i'm trying to get at with pokemon, is i feel like they rushed the last 2 sequels and they could have done better. After playing pokemon for over a decade, I don't see myself playing another generation after 6. 3 Rarity: Generous, Classy, and Sophisticated... But I actually think Black and White was good, and the Pokemon are getting better. I know everyone hates Unova pokemon, but they aren't all bad. Braviary looks like an old pokemon and is just awesome. Also, I'm excited for X and Y! And you have to play it before you put it down like that. I'm happy that they are making a new kind of Pokemon game. Not that the other ones aren't good, but it was time for a change IMO. Also, d'awwww.... Forlong 1,726 August 13, 2013 Share August 13, 2013 First of all the WiiU, PS4, and even the Xbox One are doing revolutionary things. They are the first consoles to use a CPU catche, which will allow them to process game data faster. They all have graphics and RAM comparable to PCs. Not to mention device interconnection. And how is the 3DS revolutionary, where the WiiU is not? I fail to see the distinction. Or were you to distracted by Animal Crossing to see the forest for the trees? As for "no new games", you just aren't looking. This year, we've had Lego City Undercover, The Cave, Guacamelee, Thomas Was Alone, Soul Sacrifice, Limbo, Dragon's Crown, and Remember Me. With Disney Infinity, The Wonderful 101, Watch Dogs, Contrast, Driveclub, Knack, Tearaway, and Ryse: Son of Rome coming out later this year. There are plenty of new concepts floating around. 1 Check out my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5qXAcUzrizEHvorGalU5jg?feature=watch

Discordian 6,024 August 13, 2013 Share August 13, 2013 (edited) It's been said but: you aren't looking hard enough. As with most anything people complain about there not being enough of in gaming the answer is always that. Got a decent laptop made within the last three or four years? You have a plethora of freeware and PC games that can run on ANY system made in the last ten years. Tired of all the sequels on consoles? Try the digital distribution route as they often have many original indie games floating around. Never assume that what you can see is all there is. Some games are harder to find or are the types of games your eyes would usually pass over on the shelf; Check out those games. It doesn't matter what it looks like on the front, give the game a shot anyway and see if you like it. Even party games and shovelware can surprise you if you give it a half decent chance. (M&M Beach Party, anyone?) Handhelds especially are a great source of original games. If you have a 3DS then you also have access to all DS games. If you have a regular DS (that's not a DSi) then you have access to all the GBA games out there. Always consider backwards compatibility as it can bring you many many games. The DS had an oversaturation of the types of games you'd normally pass over for the good stuff like Pokemon, Castlevania and Professor Layton but if you give these games a chance you'll likely find they are pretty good. Games like Izuna: The Unemployed Ninja or Glory of Heracles. Anime games like Bleach: Dark Souls. Did you know that Blue Dragon on the Xbox 360 got a sequel on the DS? Yup. I know this topic is about sequels everywhere but never be afraid to give a sequel a shot. They have sequels for a reason: Because people buy them. People buy them because they are good fun whether to play by yourself or just a party setting. Edited August 13, 2013 by Discordian

IronPonyApplejack 318 August 13, 2013 Share August 13, 2013 While they may not all get the proper amount of press and success, there is plenty of new gaming goodness to be found. In the current console generation, I'll name what I can think of. - Alan Wake - Mirror's Edge - Portal - Uncharted (series) - Heavy Rain - Infamous - Borderlands - The Last of Us - Bioshock Those are a few quick ones off the top of my head. I think your problem is that you're very focused on Nintendo. While they do a LOT of innovation, in terms of their big games, they mostly stick with their solid cast of established characters. (Mario, Zelda, etc.) Although the Wii U did get Lego City: Undercover this year, which is a FANTASTIC game. As for consoles....what exactly is it you want? If what the Wii U is doing isn't "new" enough for you, I'm sorry, but you are too hard to please. They're GAMING CONSOLES. What new and radical thing are you looking for, exactly? It also sounds like you discredit games simply because they're shooters. I, for one, am also tired of the year after year of COD, but don't write something off just because of what genre it's in. You'll miss out on some fantastic gaming. 1 If you're at all familiar with #Twitterponies, you can find me there! Jonke 3,743 August 13, 2013 Share August 13, 2013 (edited) So Nintendo, if your reading this, please stop rapidly shooting Mario, Sonic, Zelda, and Pokemon games that started forever ago and make some new games. Non-Sequel =/= new IP I wholeheartedly prefer a smaller selection of IPs than a huge cluster of new IPs every year. Nintendo always try to look into new ways for players to play and experience their games, existing and new IPs alike. They're very likely working with gameplay ideas way before even considering what universe it will take place in. If they think their current IPs won't cut it, then a new one will be in order that fulfills the criteria for their new game. There's a reason why Mario, Zelda, etc are doing so well. They're in fact most of the time not direct sequels but new experiences in the same universe. IPs that often deilver a more lasting impact on players due their larger history and character development. Something i prefer over short term IPs where the experience in due time will fade away, Nintendo is one of the few game companies that actually succeed with releasing games within their current IPs. They may have problems with direct sequels as well but absolutely not to the same extent you implied. If gameplay is new and innovative enough within its boundaries, it shouldn't be necessary to create a new IP to make a game feel new. Flutter's lover <3 8,210 August 13, 2013 Share August 13, 2013 Sequels...yes....some are awesome...like GTA and Borderlands. Some are okay, and some are horrible/bad. Worst sequels I've played, have been Modern Warfare 3.....it seriously felt like it should've been a DLC for MW2. but all CoDs and even BFs are pretty much cut and paste with a few new features or guns added. like all the Pokemon and Mario games are way over used....there seems to be a new pokemon and/or mario game out every few months. I want something NEW and fresh, and I think this game "Destiny" is the ticket. Looks awesome. This is also why I've been buying the $2 games on Steam...something different...like I've been playing Just Cause 2 and Sleeping Dogs lately. I don't play much Nintendo, but they need to give Mario and Pokemon a rest. Fluttershy's lover, she's my waifu. I mean when is the last time we saw a new Starfox, Ice Climbers or Metroid game? Nintendo has other franchises they don't like to use because they don't have as big of a fanbase like the fanbases for Zelda, Mario and Pokemon. I want them to resurrect some of their older titles as well as make some new ones. On the Wiiu right now, the only new and exciting title seems to be Wonderful 101. -Nobody- 534 August 24, 2013 Share August 24, 2013 I don't really mind sequels, but that's because multiplayer games will get boring after awhile on the same maps (same reason I like DLC), but I also want new games.
