Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a State Police Officer sees a car puttering along at 22 MPH.

 

He thinks to himself, "This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!" So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over.

 

Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies, two in the front seat and three in the back, wide eyed and white as ghosts.

 

The driver, obviously confused, says to him, "Officer, I don't understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?"

 

"Ma'am," the officer replies, "You weren't speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers."

 

"Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly; twenty-two miles an hour!" the old woman says a bit proudly.

 

The State Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle, explains to her that "22" was the route number, not the speed limit.

 

A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the officer for pointing out her error.

 

"But before I let you go, Ma'am, I have to ask... Is everyone in this car OK? These women seem awfully shaken and they haven't muttered a single peep this whole time," the officer asks.

 

"Oh, they'll be all right in a minute officer; we just got off Route 119."

You guys won't believe how much thermal goop I just got off my laptop CPU.

 

A couple years ago, I replaced the thermal goop on my laptop. Now, le younger me didn't know the golden rule of thermal goop: Less is more. So I proceed to put a blob on there that's about as big as you would put on there to cover a whole desk when the goal was to cover an area as big as maybe your thumbnail. It had covered my entire CPU and the whole PCB around it, surrounding all the little pins and connectors on top of the CPU with this gooey silvery substance. Fortunately, it didn't short anything out. Recently, though, I've been having performance and temperature issues with this thing. So I finally decided to open it up. And mother of God, was it bad. So about 20 coffee filters, 30 q-tips, and about half a cup of isopropyl alcohol later, I got most of it off of there. I even went as far as to put a precision flathead screwdriver around a coffee filter dipped in alcohol to clean out in between the little connectors on the CPU PCB. Then I grabbed the tube of thermal goop that came with my Noctua fan and put the right amount on there. And now I can hardly hear my laptop fan going when before I could hear the poor thing screaming for death. My laptop is cooler and quieter than it has ever been in two years. 

 

I still haven't learned my lesson. I know - Don't tear things open if you don't know what you're doing unless it's something you don't mind accidentally breaking. Heh heh. Oh well. I only wish I was watching more Linus Tech Tips back in 2012 and 2013

For now, let's just say that I've done a lot more research into applying thermal paste since that screw up

Here's how much of a difference it made: Prior to it, talking to you guys on here, my CPU would be running anywhere from 65 to 75 degrees. Some other tasks would push it to 80+ degrees. Right now, the absolute highest I've reached is 59, but it looks like it's got a tendency to hang around 47-54 degrees.
