I understand that, but by acting in such a manner, they're only making it worse. No one likes a pity party.

No one is really obliged to take part in it. But that only shows to if you really care for that person's feelings or well being or not.

Well, that would be severely subjective, since it can be hard to prove how someone feels and what they are after (supposing that they are after something).

You have a point, but they may legitimately want to show you something in the hope that you feel as happy as them when seeing it.
