Volkswagen got caught circumventing emissions testing by installing defeat devices in their automobiles. Basically, it would allow the car to detect when it's undergoing emissions testing, and the car would switch to a mode where emissions were lowered during the test. The CEO of Volkswagen apologized, saying he was "deeply sorry for breaking the trust of the customers."
