"Derp" adopted by Oxford Dictionaries

Praise be to the Internets! This week the word "derp" was officially added to the Oxford dictionary.

Derp

Exclaimation

Used as a substitute for speech regarded as meaningless or stupid, or to comment on a foolish or stupid action.

Noun

Foolishness or stupidity.

It was added after the Internet slang word caused some buzz this summer due to its growing mainstream acceptance. My reaction is simply: Pssh, you call this an online shitstorm?

The word "derp" originated with South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It was first used in their movie BASEketball, and later brought to form in the one-time gag character, Mr. Derp. Taking these origins into account - without even knowing that people were holding a serious debate over the word - I made this tribute video last month redubbing Derpy with Mr. Derp:

You were saying something about one's posterior, Prof. Smith?

Now I know bringing this up will likely rehash the old "Save Derpy" debate to some extent. However, I'd prefer it if we dropped the drama and took this opportunity to celebrate our unofficial mascot and reflect on all our own moments of derpitude. Yay Derpy! :muffins:

I find this hilarious :D if you use a word that doesn't exist long enough, it will become a real world :D

what word shall be word on next? :)

well, i've heard that muggle is in the dictionary. and i think Whovian might be in the running. I think the dictionaries are just trying to keep up with the times.

Brony. I say that because it's underlined in red every time I type it.

Also, I hope that the MLP crew acknowledges this and slip a "Oh, I derped. Sorry" line in the show. That would be awesome!

I won't be a complete brony until I get a Thunderlane plushie and go to a convention.

Interesting... You know, just this morning I read somewhere that 'twerk' is also now officially a word, too. I guess if a word is used enough, it becomes legitimate. Hmm.

I never thought I'd see the day when the word "derp" became a real word in the dictionary. I'm quite surprised. The word has become official. Praise be to the all mighty word "derp"!

I've used the term "derp" for the longest time....when I messed something  up, or forget something, I'll say I derped...,.

Friends use the term too.

I've also called things "derpy" because they are silly and or weird looking.
