I need advice and help

I am learning to draw ponies, and I am trying to get better

Here is a picture I just drew:

post-18875-0-68112100-1379563204_thumb.jpg

Its my friends OC, Tangerine Mare.

So far, I just need help with head drawings

Also, she is all white, that is why it looks like the white part around her eye is gone.

Thanks

Ok well overall it looks good, however her left ear is missing the indentation where the inner ear entrance is. Her eye highlights are also pretty small.

The neck is kinda long, and the line going across the head where the neck joins the head is a bit long, its normally pretty short.

There are also a few messy lines, but nothing major.

Oh and the horn is a bit messy you don't really have to have her horn block the hair, since the horn is normally i think a bit more centered and usually within the mane. If i'm not mistakend. It looks a bit weird with the way the horn covers where the mane would be.

I would also take away the outline of the ear that is entering the mane.

Oh and on the horn i would make the lines going across the horn a bit more rounded. curve it down like an arc. and back up.

Atleast thats what i do personally.

Anyways, besides that nitpicking and some a bit messy lines its good! Keep up the good work! your doing great!

What you need to practice on is guidelines. Look up pony anatomy refs on the internet.

Heads are usually round in MLP so circles will really help you out. Also there will be about 3-4 guidelines on that shape. One vertical and about three horizontal, The horizontals will help with placing eyes and the mouth.

Here just look at one of my WIPs:

Notice how I try to line up the bottom of her eyes with that horizontal line? And basically line up the muzzle and other features?

Making multiple layers also helps a great deal.

Looks like both @Rev and beat me to the punch and they are both quite right.  There are plenty of guides and tutorials that would aid you in drawing ponies better.  I was going to draw one myself until I realized there are far better ones than I could probably produce.  Guidelines are also a great tool to utilize to be sure that all of your features line up correctly, such as the eyes, mouth, ears and so on (especially so when trying to draw from varying perspectives).

Now, as with the picture at hand, it is a wonderful start and your friend is quite fortunate that you were kind enough to make this for them.  A few things to watch out for next time though would be the horn, ears and eyes.  Currently, the horn seems to sit too far high up on the head when it should be coming out for the forehead.  The ear that is furthest away seems to stick out a tad too much to me where it should be hidden more by the head.  Finally, the eyes.  It can be quite tricky to work with a pure white character as the white of the eyes can bleed into the rest of the head and somewhat become lost.  It might be helpful to add a line where the muzzle and furthest eye meet so there is a bit of distinction and separation between the two.  Or, you could use a slightly off-color white to add that distinction (if you look closely, Rarity would be a perfect example of this).

I do hope that this helped you at least slightly in some way.  You are off to a great start and you will only get better from here with practice.  Best of luck and happy drawing!

If you're going to draw your eyes in an "open" style rather than a closed circle/oval, I suggest (1) making the border of the eye more defined, like in the red line drawing below, or (2) using a color (any color) to make her coat just slightly not white. It's a common rule among artists to avoid white and black (which are values, not colors), and make everything a color of some sort.

Example of #2 - I made her fur here very, very light green:

A red line drawing, if you're interested:

The main things to note:

Ears should be along the same line as the jaw (feel your own jaw and ears as an example).

Horns are on the forehead rather than the top of the head.

As a general rule, males are square and females are round - this is particularly noticeable in the face/jaw.

The neck/back curves like an S. It's hard to notice since most ponies have long manes.

And lastly, try looking through dafont.com if you want neat fonts.

Good luck! smile.png
