Revy ~ Two Hands

I haven't been using a lot of Google services for a little over a year now. I've always felt they would eventually screw up big time, I never felt it would've started with YouTube, which until Google+, was only plagued with (mostly) petty problems. The biggest issue is that Google is way too persistent at doing something before somebody else. I'm very certain the big wigs at Google know exactly (or pretty well) who's getting screwed over with the new comment section and now, their new content ID system.

I imagine the guys at Google are trying to push for a system that is a true improvement on the original systems, but they're being utter idiots for releasing these systems right now. Neither systems are even close to being completed, they are so easily exploited by others that it renders many features of YouTube useless. The only thing that Google's doing right at this point is its advertising and PR. People are still crazy in love with Google that they're willing to ignore all of the company's absolutely retarded moves no matter what. The worst part is, Google is able to get away with all this because they've got more than enough money to cover their asses for all of their mistakes in the next million years.

And don't even get me started on Google+. Sure, they're trying to pull off a "one Microsoft" here by combining all Google services to Google+, but at least Microsoft gave users an alternative to Windows 8 (which obviously did not get the reviews it was hoping for), and more importantly, did not disable any feature people were already using. Sure, you get all these fancy new features using Windows 8, but those who are on Vista or 7 are still getting security updates, and they can still do exactly everything they could've done before.

It's such a terrible thought that Google can indeed get away with all these things because they have the money and the following to keep them afloat. Not even EA's got anything on the kind of things that Google's doing.

The AJS won't necessarily die. This will just mean that Joe will probably end up uploading his game reviews on Blip and they will be showcased on TGWTG, so it's not a total lost for him.

But the fact that he, as everyone else, is extremely angry about this retarded change still stands.

As annoyed as this all makes me, there's a few things to keep in mind.

1. Google doesn't ever gain very much from YouTube - it's an enormous legal hassle for them, and doesn't monetize all that much for its content (and what it does monetize needs to be shared)

2. There's hardly anything law-related going on here. These aren't really "DMCA" takedowns done through a court - they're just one company asking another to take down content. Heck, Google would legally be in the clear if they just came down and decided to delete particular videos "because they didn't like them". That's not pretty, and people would certainly be pissed if they did that (as they are now) but just recognize that there's not much point in analyzing laws about what's allowed for a takedown.

It's like if a store owner were told by his successful sleazy friend,

"Hey, Joe. See that customer over there? I wants yous to tell him he's gotta move on goin'."

"Huh? Why?"

"Just trus' me on dis one, okay? I ain't ever done ya wrong, and we's such good pals, right? I wouldn't want yous to disappoint me..."

"...Well, all right. One customer doesn't matter. HEY! YOU!"

I DO think that this is a perfect time to be looking at alternative video sites. Vimeo might be a good enough one, and I've also heard of a decentralized system called MediaGoblin.
