Why do people act like S1+2 were perfect?

I just wonder. When People bash on S3 they seem to say that its not as good as the first two seasons. But both of S2 and S1 had its flaws. So why do people th8nk this way?

That's a good question... I really liked S3 just as much as the first two.

It might have something to do with Lauren Faust. She only stuck around for two seasons but left after the third.

Also, there are still some stray Twilicorn haters out there that haven't seen any of S4 yet.

And there are a lot more songs. There are still some people who don't like too many songs.

Well, I think its a nostalgia thing. People always tend to look back on things and say that the first part was good, and the newer stuff isn't. Sometimes its justified, like Star Wars or Spongebob, but sometimes its not.

In the case of MLP, there were even people who thought S2 was terrible compared to S1. I guess some people just love to whine and complain, despite claiming to be fans of the show. The show can't please everyone, so if they want to be unhappy, then more frustration to them, I'm gonna keep watching and enjoying S4!

I believe it is because the community really started to grow around season 1 and 2.

So for many people season 1 was the reason, and season 2 was even more of it!

But season 3 became... even more... and they had already waited for season 2, so more waiting.

Basically newer seasons get more hype, and also more episodes to compare them to.

Even on top of that comes selective memory. It is proven that good memories stick better than bad, so you get nostalgia.

My thoughts, no fact =)

I will admit, I liked season 2 more than 3 (and 1 for that matter), but I didn't think 3 was "awful" just the weakest of the 4. So far I am liking 4 far more than 3. My reasoning is more because I felt like a lot of episodes that had potential in season 3 were biting off more than they could chew. Discord's episode was nice, but the ending was veeeeery rushed. It should have been a 2 parter or they should have trimmed down the fluff to make the ending a little longer to elaborate on it.

The finale as much as I am not "against" alicorn Twilight, I was more annoyed by how ridiculously rushed it was. Crammed 4 songs into a 22 minute episode, and it didn't bode well with me. It felt like they were just quickly trying to get to the alicorn Twilight deal to me. I didn't hate it, but it probably would have been better as a two parter.

I will praise season 3 though for giving us some nice new characters like Babs Seed, and of course giving Dash some more character development (where she isn't a total bitch for no reason and has actually learned from some of her mistakes in the past) and it did have a few good songs. All and all, I didn't feel season 3 was "terrible", but it definitely showed that their attention was divided between it and the Equestria Girls movie.

This is probably due to the fact that where bronies began. It was what started it all. S1 and S2 were what got me in to the show. I'm definitely not saying that S3 and S4 are terribly bad.

I feel like most of the S3 hate mostly stems from the S3 finale rather than the whole season itself.

I think a lot of S1+2's love stems from being the start of the series and Faust's involvement(though a lesser extent in S2's case)

Honestly I consider S2 my least favorite season. Yeah it had some of my favorite episodes in the entire series, but there was also much more bullshit it S2 than S1+3 that just rubbed me the wrong way

I forgot about that, but yes I am sure a lot of people stem their love from their loyalty to Faust. Honestly, I am not phased by her leaving the show because I still think Hasbro is doing a great job with it. Season 3 was "shaky" to me, but they are recovering quite well with season 4 here.

I think it has to do with the fact that the seasons were what set everything up in the first place. We can't have had any later seasons without the the first seasons and they set us up for what was to come. The significant change in overall feeling and focus of the later seasons must really bother others, and understandably so, honestly. It's changed in many ways, and while I don't agree that later seasons are less-than-quality, or that earlier seasons were perfect (I mean, they had Cutie Mark Confidential, for Celestia's sake.), I can at least understand the sentiment.

It's probably partially due to nostalgia of first watching the show since a lot of the fandom got here in either season 1 or 2. Also that Lauren Faust was on the show at that point. I don't think the show is going downhill like some people are claiming. Well I found season 3 the weakest I'm finding season 4 great. Well I still found season 3 good I think it's probably the weakest since the writers had to rush through stuff with only 13 episodes.

So people are biased? Thats logical.

It's human nature I guess, but if you're focusing so much on the past that you can't enjoy the preset that's unfortunate. Magical Mystery Cure was the first episode I saw and still one of my favorites, but I don't care what season it was in. I just have favorite episodes and I don't care about the seasons.

Well, some of Season 3's episodes were someone lackluster and the fact that it was half as long as the first 2 seasons makes people generally think less of it compared to seasons 1 and 2.

I agree though that it's somewhat of an unfair assessment. Season 3 wasn't that bad.

You know, it could just be that they actually thought the writing was better in seasons 1 and 2.  Just because you disagree doesn't mean  that that's not a valid opinion.

Personally, I gie season 1 a lot more leeway because they were just starting things out, really establishing the characters, establishing the world, and working out all the kinks.  That's what you're supposed to do with a first season.  I'd say that by midway through they more or less had everything ironed out.  With season 3, they didn't really have that excuse, and some characters, particularly Rarity and Spike, seemed to regress.

They weren't perfect- S1 had the whole e/i banner going on so it was a bit preachier with the friendship lessons, and season 2 had a lot of great episodes sure but every single one was standalone, it even felt that both the two-parters were sort of disconnected from the season since we saw no mention of Discord after Return of Harmony and no mention of Cadance/Shining Armor before Canterlot Wedding. Season 3 did have a lot of continuity to make up for it though, but suffered a bit for being shorter and still having somewhat weaker filler episodes, so I can certainly see why some people like it less, it's my least favorite even. Still, all the seasons have more great moments than bad, so I don't see any reason to hate any of them entirely, but they still shouldn't be outright praised as being 'perfect' either.

Season 4 really hasn't had any misfires so far imo though, but we'll see how it turns out as a whole compared to the rest once it's over. ;)

I don't see how The writing in S3 was THAT bad. Sure the Spike episodes were not that good but almost every Spike episode except for a few are terrible. Dragon Quest and Owl well were terrible.

I think the reason a lot of fans like the first two seasons is because episodes in those seasons are what likely got them hooked on the show to begin with.  I know that if it wasn't for a scene in Lesson Zero (that wasn't even that big of a deal in the episode and was about 20 seconds long), I might not have ever gotten into the show.  I imagine it's the same for a great deal of the fandom.  They probably saw something in one of the earlier episodes, and that's what got them to start watching the show.

And that's kind of been the thing about the show.  There's always something in each season that is just so crazy, insane and random, that it's talked about for a long time.

season 3 was half the other seasons in number of episodes but it also highlighted the worst episodes of the series (at least in my opinion)

1. Too many Pinkie Pies

2. One Bad Apple

3. Just for Sidekicks

4. Spike at your Service

5. Games Ponies Play

That's almost half season! 'm not saying those were bad, but they were kind of boring, lacking of substance and they had average level of entertainment. Among my least favorites episodes.

A valid opinion, but one based purely in subjectivity nonetheless. From an objective standpoint, I have observed no noticeable differences in the show's quality from season to season. The writing had it's peaks and troughs in seasons 1 & 2; it had them in season 3; and they continue to have peaks and troughs to this day. The simple fact of the matter is that the strength of the writing is never going to be a constant as long as there are as many writers as there are contributing to the show.

Personally, I'm going to have call "nostalgia goggles" on this one, as there seems to be quite the overlap between those who think 1&2 > 3&4 and those who've been watching since season 2 at the latest. I could be wrong about that, but it seems that those who got into the show during the hiatus before season 4 have been much more satisfied with the recent episodes than have others.

The community was really created in season 1 and thriving in season 2. Season 3 was not up to par writing wise as a lot of the prior seasons. The 2-parter opening wasn't amazing (Sombra barely got any development), it had half-the amount of episodes, lots of filler eps, and the strong episodes were mostly good due to return characters. Too busy paced a finale too (although the songs were good).

Factor in a long (almost a year) gap between s3 and s4, equestria girls, and alicorn drama,  and you see why it was a tough to love season. Season 4 feels a lot more coherent then S3 so in many ways we're getting back on track to justify the massive fanbase that is mlp. Again S1 and S2 weren't perfect but there's a charm to them that i dont think S3 had.  Then again if you came in during season 3 and stuck around then its no wonder you don't notice it as much.
