books Why should 50 shades of grey only be read by an adult audience?

I guess, but at high school we are supposed to behave and be treated like adults aren't we? If so then I think reading it would be a good example that I am mature. If I'm not reading it aloud or in class i think it should be fine.

Oh where to begin.  Let's start with just because you are reading a mature book does not make you mature.    You are just reading  mature book...  and in school that is in no way appropriate.   The books at most schools do have to be approved as to be relevant to teach something or not be inappropriate reading material.   Stuff like "To Kill a Mocking Bird" and "Macbeth" are acceptable because they are teaching something.  50 shades does not teach anything.  At least not what you should be learning.

Now if your parents are fine with you reading it, then read it at home.   Explicit Sex literature really is not something that should be in school.  Except maybe Sex Education, even then with what I was taught in that class, It all had a great deal of discussion behind each topic.   I should also note that that class was only taught to senior students.

So to sum up.  When your 18  you can read what ever you want to.

I think the adult audience would be the primary demographic. However, if you are mature enough to understand what you're getting into to, then go ahead. However, really to be honest, I would just stay clear from the book because its bad. In fact, it used to be Twilight fanfiction. So, its just Twilight fanfiction with only the characters replaced with original ones.

How telling is I'm someone that tends to get complimented for being mature and smart for my age, but I actually tend to gravitate towards stuff without gratuitous adult content? I mean there's adult stuff I like(mainly in video games), but not nearly as much of it as the less edgy stuff I enjoy.

I don't think the problem with this book is more the sex then is it the fact that it is out right abuse to what he does to her... seriously he practically slams her and beats and all this other crap that shouldn't really be read by anyone to say the least... I HAVE read them and enjoyed them because i get lost in this world that i think i kinda wanna be a apart of.... I think if you just don't read the first book (thats where all of this goes down) the second book actually goes into their love story.... I can not see how someone at the age of 10-14 would understand that she really is going through torture for this man when she doesn't deserve such harsh thing like that. (sorry rambling) but yea I do not agree that she agreed to this then after all the abuse STILL went back to him. it is kinda sickening

Honestly I can't stand 50 shades, I have read people saying that it is a book about BDSM, It's NOT! It's about the guy "Christian"? forcing the lady into sexual acts because of a contract that are beyond her limitations and just continuing on even after she uses their safe word and he keeps going. at that point it stops being consensual and turns to rape. This book should not be read by anybody if you want to read something that is actually well written about BDSM relationships go look up a web comic called "Sunstone" on deviant art and another one that I thoroughly love is called Nana to Kaoru.

at first I thought BDSM was just about whips ropes and black leather, those are just tools that a DOM uses to bring... ahem.... pleasure... to their Sub. they trust each other to know how far to go before being dangerous. This is a critical difference to 50 Shades of grey and any true BDSM lover stays far away from that garbage.
