That was something I was wondering about myself actually. Though since it's doubtful content will be hosted on site, I doubt that'll happen.   My issue is that the scale they are shooting for is far too large. They are essentially going "a little of everything", but most of these things have sites that have built up loyalty to their users and it's going to be hard to convince them to start using another site.

Any other fandom and I'd agree with you, but this fandom seems to not do things halfway... I feel like in this fandom, it probably would be hosted by the site itself, and not just a place to embed youtube videos.

Either way though I do agree on your second point.  I think that a single site to host a large portion of the fandom's artwork and fan-made content would be wonderful for a lot of reasons, but at the same time I can't see everybody dumping all the other sites, so it'll likely be used by a smaller niche group and just end up being another site you have to check if you want to see all the fan-made content out there.

I can think of many instances where I'd disagree, but I'll hold my tongue for the sake of keeping it relevant.

Highly highly unlikely. Even with the brony content on youtube only making up a small portion we are talking videos with up to 2GB of file sizes here. Hell, most videos I upload are at minimum 400MB. You would use up most of your 100GB hosting options in less than a day. You'd use up a TB in probably less than 2 days if you had more than 30 users. It is virtually impossible for average people to host video sites unless they limit it to a very small amount of video because of how expensive hosting is. If it does allow hosting, it is going to be severely limited to the point of uselessness.

I have ran websites before, hosting is ridiculously expensive, and I recall running a site that was designed for video that was popular at the time. The problem we ran into was trying to convince people to leave YouTube to use our site, it was nay impossible. People who are already established on youtube want to stay on youtube because they have more opportunity to reach fame there, and a lot of them can generate ad revenue.

This is gonna be amazing. Hopefully they implement a multitasking feature or something into it, so I can listen to music while reading a fanfic or looking at some adorable pictures.

Even so, it's not a bad idea having everything organized on a single place rather than having to go on millions of different websites, like Youtube, FimFiction, DeviantArt, etc... just to have your daily dose of pony.

I won't be a complete brony until I get a Thunderlane plushie and go to a convention.

Pretty cool, pretty cool but I'm not excited. Here's why:

There already are so many websites that does the same thing. They say share videos, fanfics, images and music. However we already got youtube for videos, fimfiction for fanfics, youtube, soundclound and other websites for music, plus a huge number of websites for art such as deviantart and derpibooru. I know youtube and dA isn't only about ponies, but people won't care. This website will have the same problem as our own pony.fm has. No one will use it cause we already got youtube.

They will not be able to compete against youtube just cause they have pony videos only. Besides, video hosting is reaaally expensive and I bet they're just going to have youtube vids playing on their website.

As awesome as this is, I can't help but feel like we're literally standing above the crowd in terms of other fandoms. This is both a good and bad thing, but I like it. The fandom is becoming more like a closely nit community instead of just another face in the crowd of fandoms, and I'm proud to see how we can come together like this.

I completely agree with you. Nothing wrong with a creative Fandom. But I feel like we are pushing it a bit

It's what we call "nifty in concept". In concept it is a good idea, but when it comes to execution we always seem to find out that the market is different about it. The only way they are realistically going to be able to host that much themselves is if they go commercial, and they legally can't because of copyright reasons. Also not to mention not many people would throw money to a fansite. At least not enough to pay for that kind of hosting.

cool idea, but good luck getting people to switch over. everyone and their mothers use youtube, only a select group of bronies even know of ponytube meaning that getting views on there will be kind of tricky.

Of course hey I'm sure youtube was the same way when it first started so go figure.

Just editing my signature to say that my behavior on here was cringe. I don't regret the friends i made but man i was cringe here

There are several cons to this that have already been mentioned. Hosting problems, trolls, sounds better on paper, loyalty to familiar websites, etc.

But honestly, there is another, rather prevalent online, issue.

The inevitable rule 34, and the subsequent improper tagging.

Without proper moderation rule 34 media would get out of had quickly on there, thus leading to more readily available NSFW images and videos to be accidentally stumbled upon by a curious young fan of the show. I'm pretty certain that the devs know they won't be able to stop it entirely, and hope they have made an adults only section to help keep the less desirable aspects zoned off from those trying to not see it.

That's just my personal take on the whole thing though.

Well... blockchain-based video streaming is becoming a thing now. Similar in concept to how torrents work, with bits and pieces of files stored on countless machines. Easy enough to pull data from to reconstruct the full product, but at the same time, very anonymous. But in this case, you need not download the whole thing before viewing, you stream it just any video site.
