Moost 164 February 23, 2014 Share February 23, 2014 Another post where I kind of take things seriously but... Do Ponies use weapons? Because I haven't seen the Royal Guard use like swords and stuff. Do they just rely on unlegged combat (equivalent to unarmed) and magic? I know this is a bit of a dumb question but that's why we're here, right? GenderIsAnIllusion 2,177 February 23, 2014 Share February 23, 2014 The guards have spears, and in Luna Eclipsed pipsqueak had a toy sword, so it stands to reason real swords exist their as well. Doc. Volt 2,561 February 23, 2014 Share February 23, 2014 (edited) i saw tesla coils out of the ponyville dam during the "mare do well" episode. If ponies have this kind of tecnology (maybe to replace unicorn's magic, like the propeller of RD's Tank tortoise, at the end of the day electricity is just electrons jumping.. unicorns can do that shit) maybe they can use it as a weapon XD (red alert anypony? XD) Edited February 23, 2014 by Doc. Volt 1 Red cross voluntier:""The first to arrive,The last to leave" Proud member of the Code3 Bronies! My OC page, click here! Nameless Knight 1,001 February 23, 2014 Share February 23, 2014 I'm sure that unicorn guards may even use bows, "I had a name... forgot it many, centuries ago. It faded away like many things, but me. Fhaolan 4,483 February 23, 2014 Share February 23, 2014 Here's my thoughts on weapons and armor in Equestria: My Little Armory: Weapons My Little Armory: Armor and Speculation In brief: In the show we see spears, lances, toy swords (which imply non-toy swords), party cannons (which imply non-party cannons), cutie-marks of bows and arrows, references to bullets (which might mean sling bullets, not gun bullets), and references to tanks (in ways that definitely refer to the military vehicle). It is very likely they have extensive weapon selections, but that they have fallen out of use as they have not fought in battles within living memory. Fhaolan 4,483 February 23, 2014 Share February 23, 2014 But like, how do they hold it? The same way they seem to hold many other tools, like hammers, pencils, etc. In their mouth. That's the way Pipsqueak held his toy sword.

Fhaolan 4,483 February 23, 2014 Share February 23, 2014 I know this is dumb too but... Do you think they use guns too? It's not overly likely. For propellant-driven weaponry they seem to have concentrated on crew-type weapons, howitzers, canons, mortars, etc. If they do have guns, given the few samples we've seen, likely they would be turret-style or self-supporting. But it would be kind of heard to swing, and it might jerk their necks. Equine necks are structured quite different from human necks, and can take a lot more strain. Remember that they are used to using mouth-hammers, which will have as much, if not more impact on their necks as a sword. Plus, as herbivores they have thicker, heavier teeth, so grip is not a problem. The usual argument against the practice is swinging a sword in your mouth would mean needing to take your eyes off the target fairly often. Which again is looking at it from a human point of view. The shape of equine heads actually give them a *much* wider range of vision. Now, in reality the swords would be designed quite differently to suit this style, but the animators are using human-style grips on these tools simply to keep the audience's recognition of them. Fhaolan 4,483 February 23, 2014 Share February 23, 2014 Haha, but what if they go to stab some pony? Wouldn't the sword get lodged down their throat? Nope. Pipsqueak held the sword with the blade going out the side of his mouth, not straight forward. That's likely how they would normally hold a sword of that style. So stabbing would be done with a swing of the head, not a lunge. If Pipsqueak's toy sword is indicative of real sword design there, it's definitely a chopping/slashing blade, not a stabbing one, as it's a leaf blade. If they've developed more advanced arts of fence, they would likely be with different sword designs just like we did. In their case, I would expect to see cup guards that would cover the nose, preventing thrusts from pushing the hilt down the throat, as well as providing protection to the sensitive equine nose. Interestingly, Pipsqueak was dressed as a pirate from the late 1600's, but the toy sword didn't match the costume. I would have expected a representation of a cutlass, given Pipsqueak's costume, but the artists very deliberately drew a leaf blade with a straight crossguard like an iron age Xiphos.
