Discord. Can chaos really be that bad compared to if the other villains took rule? At least no one would be getting killed under Discord's power (I assume).

Queen Chrysalis of course, her ambitions were more out of necessity and the survival of her kind rather than for selfish gain.

Extremely unlike the others whose only motivations were that their prides were at risk.... also, where's The Mane-iac?

The answer isn't even close: Discord. Of the main villains here, he's the embodiment of chaos who cares for no one but himself. Besides his free-flowing, menacing, comedic personality, what makes him scarier is the fact that his motivation has no set goal. He wants Equestria to be his own personal playground; if he ever feels bored, he can recreate it whenever he wants, whatever he wants. His ability to improvise lies with a snap of his fingers.

Besides Chrysalis, Discord had the best motivation because he didn't what he did as long as he turned Equestria into his own personal playground where he can bend anything to his will for the sake of having fun. Think of it as a weird, funny motivation where there is no goal set for it.

Chrysalis had the best motivation. She wanted to keep her people (ponies) from starving. Can you really blame her?

To all the Chrysalis defenders, there is a huge misconception that Changelings NEED love to survive. We know it powers them up, for all we know, it could be like steroids for them. According to the MLP guidebook, Changelings also rely on fear tactics, a stupid idea if they just fed on love.

Now, OT, I say Sunset Shimmer has the best motive. She felt cheated of her right to become Princess and tried to do it herself. She thinks she's the good guy of her story which is why she let Spike go

Also I don't think NMM was jealous, She was more... Tired of being in the shadows while her sister gets all the praise. She felt under appreciated, and just wanted it to stop. Because of that she kinda lost control and gave in to her anger.

So on my list of mlp Villains with the best motivation:

  1. Queen Chrysalis
  2. Nightmare Moon/Luna
  3. Discord

Then again it is never stated that changelings starve without love, Chrysalis says:

Right you are, Princess. And as queen of the changelings, it is up to me to find food for my subjects. Equestria has more love than any place I've ever encountered. My fellow changelings will be able to devour so much of it that we will gain more power than we have ever dreamed of!

So perhaps love is just tied to their magic powers. Still world conquest is always a great motivation. We wouldn't have all those great WW2 movies without it.

Well, Nightmare Moon has a valid reason, she was jelous and lonely, a pony can do crazy things after a prolonged amount of exclusion. But, hay that's my opinion :)

Luna's/Nightmare Moon's case: (read the writing at the top right corner)

I see nothing about tactics in the book? The line "designed to scare even the bravest pony into submission" is said more in passing and refers to their looks rather than scare tactics.

OT: I went with Chrysalis because from a strict motivation perspective I think the changelings had the best.

NMM was just pissed off and Discord had no real motivation IMO, he just kind of did for his amusement. Sombra just wanted his throne back which was never rightfully his anyways, and Sunset was just an angsty teenager who lost a beauty contest. Mane-iac is just crazy and wants to push the Power Ponies over and over, not really caring about the outcome of her current plan so long as she made the heroes have a bad day (my headcannon anyways since she has had very little screen time, follows what the Joker has always been about basically).

Luna didn't want to take over the world until Celestia banished her.

so it was all Celestia's fault!

Yes it is always sad when the rich, castle owning folk surrounded by servents don't get the appropriate amount of respect. Like say in the form of castles and taxes. That is why they need to destroy the entire world by bringing eternal night. Because being wealthy just isn't good enough, can't the peasants just see that.

... Don't worry Princess your race and the power of nepotism will one day see you restored to wealth and power.

Nightmare Moon. In the comics, it's revealed that she was feeling sad, but not to the point of becoming evil. However, evil spirits called the Nightmare Forces took advantage of her moment of weakness to take over her mind.

@,

Really? I seem to recall Luna ranting like a needy child even before Celestia did anything. In fact, she was threatening Celestia

Now, onto a more detailed analyisis.

Discord: Just a kindergartener stomping ants. He has no motivation other than "Be evil for lolz". No, just because the Joker does this doesn't make Discord the same motivation wise

Nightmare Moon: WAHHH! I WANT ATTENTION! WAAH! I WANT EVERYPONY TO DIE WORSHIPPING ME! WAHH! I NEED MY DIAPER CHANGED!

Sunset Shimmer: She felt that power was the only route to becoming an alicorn and decided that Celestia was cheating her of her birth right. She thinks she's the hero of her own story, which is why she reforms so fast after being shown what she really is

Sombra: We don't know much about him, but the fact that he seemed to want to make the Crystal Ponies miserable just because he got off on it gives him points

Mane-iac: She wanted everyone in the world to go insane. See, this is more like the Joker than Discord. She gets second prize with Sombra in third

@@Manman20x6,

Really? The comics aren't canon

In the show, we clearly see her ranting like a an ego driven brat even before she transforms

@Evil Dragon Master,

It was heavily implied the Crystal Empire has enough magic to indirectly control the rest of Equestria. Also, one image explicitly showed Sombra using the Crystal Heart as a weapon.
