That's what I'm counting on. He wont see it as Soul saving his hide, but that he did it "by himself", thus doing something stupid like taunting Malinter as he walks away. He then gets a lecture and an ass whupping from Soul.

 

Also, if possible, have him insult the Princesses again around Soul. Soul would get REALLY damn pissed. (as you know, he did nearly died in some war fighting for Celestia... wow I really need to make his backstory more specific...)

Lightning is Pripyat's Feral OC in this thing and is the defacto leader of the ferals even though most folks mistake Malinter for the leader because he is the biggest and strongest feral most meet.

Hey, nothing says they're can't be any spirit animals. Buffalos can talk after all. And as for claw weapons, why not? Most ponies never use weapons, doesn't mean they don't use any of the like. As for mine, it's a headcanon, but not contradicted by anything
