GXPBlast 597 March 22, 2014 Share March 22, 2014 Below is a clip from a the movie knowing in which the earths sun creates a solar flare which is similar to a supernova in terms of damage (yes I know its unrealistic for our sun to do this) Lets just say a star outside of the equestrian planet goes supernova and for the sake of this thread has this effect showed below. Keep in mind the ponies of Equestria have no idea what is about to happen. Could they survive this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN1SyaSdCeM

Ribbonfree 2,384 March 22, 2014 Share March 22, 2014 (edited) If an event of that magnitude could slip by the Princesses' ability to detect disruptions of harmony, I doubt they'd have the magic on hand to prevent it from wiping the planet clean. If they could catch it with advance warning they could probably protect the planet with enough unicorn magic. Scootalove 10,692 March 22, 2014 Share March 22, 2014 I don't think so. If they are unaware about the supernova and the supernova has already made its mark, then there would be no way of Equestria surviving something that is the instrument of their destruction. 1 Credit: Moony © Forum FAQ Forum Rules

Nameless Knight 1,001 March 22, 2014 Share March 22, 2014 Never underestimate the power of magic and friendship. Nah but they're probably doomed. Don't say that All you need to do is believe!!! Yeah unless every unicorn and alicorn used their magic all at once they are doomed. Probably because there is going to be that one jerk unicorn that doesn't want to help.... Psss it would either be Diamond Tiara, Silver spoon, or that fancy money bags guy... forgot his name Or they could just try and use magic to revert the star/sun to a younger state giving the ponies a couple million years to find a way to save Equus. But that would probably take most of the planet's unicorn and alicorn population plus probably the use of the alicorn amulet. P.S. Nothing with mass can go the speed of light, the only other way is to have infinite energy. Explosions have mass and they don't have infinite energy "I had a name... forgot it many, centuries ago. GXPBlast 597 March 22, 2014 Author Share March 22, 2014 I don't think so. But Equestria's cosmology is different than ours. Maybe this sort of thing could be controlled by Luna? Well putting aside what the pony universe could be, this is coming from an outside star. So far I have yet to see the ponies travel into the cosmos and explore other planets and such. In this scenario they don't know what star its coming from, and its hitting them suddenly. What this thread is to point out their resilience to damage. So what I am trying to get at are the Alicorns truly Immortal to the fact that they can never die which some claim. Also this blast can come in waves and its not a single blast. So even if magic was used to prevent the initial damage I am sure that the ponies and Alicorns would be either badly hurt or extremely exhausted from the initial blast, the following blasts would technically destroy the planet itself. The only way I can see the ponies surviving is if they use the mirror from EG and either find another planet or all enter another dimension but that would take the ponies knowledge in astronomy to predict when the star is going supernova to evacuate everyone, but in this case it just happens with no warning as they had no knowledge of the cosmos besides their home planet at least in their dimension. Celestia directly controls their sun. This could never happen. Key word their Sun, this is a totally different one coming from light years away and there was no warning it just hits. Plus the sun capable of this damage is about 1000+ the size of their sun

Omnicidal maniac part is right.... Sorry, it is 10:40 PM in Texas and I am tired!! so my brain isn't working properly. "I had a name... forgot it many, centuries ago. Sunny Fox 5,961 March 22, 2014 Share March 22, 2014 (edited) Obviously the answer is "no". Given your conditions of not knowing about it before it hits. I'm more worried about your contention that a solar flare is anywhere near the level of a supernova. When a supernova goes off, it has enough energy to outshine its home galaxy! As for "because magic"... c'mon. Chryslis became more powerful than Celestia by draining the love of one pony for his fiancé. Celestia would have nowhere near the magical power to protect Equestria from a supernova. Edited March 22, 2014 by SolarFox Happy minion of The Fabulous One! I think a few lunatics could welcome the end of the world, it happens in our world as well. But no character shown so far except maybe Discord in a particularly weird mood strikes me as the sort to harbor such sentiments. Hell, even the changelings probably like existing more than having a grudge against ponies. They'd probably pitch in if they could.

A solar flare cannot do such a thing and thats where the movie has it wrong as out sun is not capable of such lol. But the destruction caused by a suernova itself would have very similar effects. Well, I don't know for sure what are the stars in Equestria. That scene in Princess Twilight Sparkle that showed both day and night at the same time made me think that Equestria may be a pocket universe instead of a planet, with it's own physics. If so, the stars in the night sky may be nothing more than little lights. The thing is: there may be no stars. Even their sun may not be a star per se. Of course, assuming that Equestria is a planet with a weird geocentric model and that I'm incorrect in assuming that the stars belong to Luna's powers (the little animation in the first episode makes me think that Luna may be controlling the stars too, also, the stars aided in Nightmare Moon's escape), then a supernova CAN occur and it's beyond Luna's power to influence. Then Equestria will get sterilized, if not outright destroyed. Nothing would survive, including alicorns, who I don't think are immortal. I'm not even thinking in a magic shield capable of withstanding the monstrous amount of energy in a supernova. TL;DR: if it happens, it's all gone. Now, talking about evacuation, Again, I question their ability to predict a supernova. I don't think that they have technology for it and would depend on Luna (since I believe stars are her domain). But again, I can be wrong and they may have some sort of advanced magic, like say... enchanted telescopes, or something of the sort. But then, even if they can detect/predict the supernova with time to evacuate, they'd need to be lucky enough that the portal is active. After all, some knowledge in astronomy, they must have. I just don't know how much. Then again, if Luna IS connected to the stars through her magic, then she could be a gigantic repository of information. On the other hand, another reason, to decide wherever Equestria's cosmology is similar to ours is the amount of energy that the princesses can output when they so easily move celestial bodies. If their sun is similar to ours, could the princess of the sun and of the night generate a shield powerful enough? I don't know... The amount of energy involved is way beyond what I understand. https://www.fimfiction.net/user/32864/Metemponychosis For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out.
