Knowing Bronies That Fit The Negative Stereotype

GXPBlast

Recommended Posts

The typical stereotype for bronies is that we are socially awkward, overweight, neck beards, nerds, virgins, loners, basement dwellers or just ugly who only can fit in the MLP fandom as we are surrounded by others with the same traits. Also many believe MLP is an escape for people who are rejected in this world and thats why we are attracted to MLP.

The media and people on other websites will post images of such people in the fandom who have such traits thus giving us the stereotype to make the fandom look bad.

Out of all the bronies I have met most of them dont fit this stereotype. The only stereotype that most of the bronies I have met fall under is that they are quirky, have geeky interests, some wear fedoras, and others are just shy.

I have only met one brony who fits the stereotype of a neck beard, overweight, loner, outcast but in general he is a nice person and I dont judge him for those negative traits but haters will use people like him as the face of the brony fandom.

I have met bronies that I would never expect are. I mean some of these guys work out, are in a relationship, and have other interests that brony haters would never expect a brony to have.

Anyone else personally know bronies that meet the negative stereotype?

Here are the bronies that I've observed (but not actually met since I'm closeted):

  • Two fit the stereotype almost perfectly.  Everyone, including myself, avoids them at all costs.  They just act like little children.
  • Two are theater geeks.  I suspect many others that are theater geeks are also bronies.  However, I think they just do it to be hipsters (I loathe those kinds of people).
  • Then there's two others who may be bronies.  Both of them have said "Rainbow Dash is best pony", but I think they were just trolling.  They are perfectly normal and popular.

I am sort of shy, introverted, awkward, and nerdy.  However, I'm the opposite of fat and lazy: I'm at the top of my class.

I am certain this is only a small portion of the fandom at my high school.  There are perhaps dozens of closet bronies.  I even suspect some of my friends of being closet bronies.  I think that the awkward ones more easily disclose that they're bronies than the popular ones.  Although I'm not popular, I remain closeted to maintain my social reputation.  Anyways, I think it's the most extreme of bronies that like to show their faces on the news and at conventions, who are typically the stereotype bronies.  Thus, the media sees this and thinks that all bronies are this way.

Don't know anyone that fits the "negative" stereotypes, I don't really look at it as "negative" but I see the point. Most of us probably fit at least one or more of the stereotypes.

Nothing wrong with being nerdy, virgin, awkward, loner or how you are physically overweight, normal weight, underweight. Or your facial hair choice. In the end of the day, what we have in common is the interest in the show not the stereotypes. lol

Personally... not really.

The people seemed a tad weirder than normal maybe, yeah, but the brony group I met up with... well, a few individuals seemed to just be those fairly charismatic, friendly, good looking dudes that you learn to like very easily.

Plus there a few chicks among them, going against the huuugely male-dominated misconception. They were pretty friendly and non-awkward too. I think one of 'em is a vector artist that more or less runs the group.

I haven't meet anyone of my brony friends or seen them so....
I guess i have to go from myself then.
no I know nobody who fits these stereotypes I personally work out almost everyday of the week had a few relationships which has lasted long and I am not rejected from this world and the reason i find MLP fun/attractive is the fact of its awesome and the fandom is the kindliness i ever seen it is open and caring

I guess I'd fit in the categories of being socially awkward and overweight ... also why I tend to keep my being a brony (if I truly am one) as low-key as possible.  It's also the reason my first brony convention was my last brony convention.

Let's see.

Socially awkward? Yes.

Overweight? Underweight.

Loner? By choice.

Neckbeard? No.

Nerd? You could say that, depending on your criteria.

Basement dweller? I like darkness, but using a computer in the dark is something I hate. I already have myopia, and I don't want to fuck up my vision even more.

Ugly? Again, depending on criteria. I think I'm just average-looking.

As for others I know who fit this, I don't even KNOW any other bronies in person.

Stereotyping is something I really hate. Just because we like a show outside our demographic (Ok fine, yes, we do make porn of it as well) doesn't make us any of these things.

I've honestly never meant a nerd in general that meant those stereotypes, and I've been in comic shops and such. Honestly, 90% of the "neckbeards" I've meant were the opposite of nerds and qualified more as trailer trash than basement dwellers.

I've only seen one in the wild and he didn't fit any of those traits.

I've yet to see any that wear fedoras, those things are a trilby and an instant sign of a hipster. Indiana Jones would have been much stranger if he wore what everyone refers to when they say fedora anymore.  :P

Personally I'm shy, introverted, and a geek, but that's about it. I grew up/lived/worked on a farm most my life so far so am the complete opposite of most the rest of those. I've rebuilt several Jeeps, and go off-road with them. And at one point I had a girlfriend for about 5 years, so that knocks out a few more of them. post-9221-0-11206600-1396145131.png

Besides, those are only negative traits if you let them get to you. Everyone is different, nothing wrong with that, and with time everyone changes. So what may describe you today, probably won't in the future. If you're in the crowd that judges an entire group of people only by what the media reports on, or what you read on the internet, then I promise we'll never be friends so don't bother trying.

I know a few that fit the stereotype IRL. I avoid them at meets and stay by my friends' side, they make me nervous. I know the difference between a brony and a complete creep and thankfully I have good brony friends to protect me from the creepy stereotypes.

That's the problem you run in the digital age, information spreads fast and unfiltered so it gets to the assholes as well. The other issue is that people that jump on bandwagons just for attention seem to flock to this show,  I don't how many times I've been online and had bite my tongue instead of saying "if you hate the way the show's going so much, why the hell are you still here you moron?"

My friend slightly fits the bill. Ever since we graduated High School he's getting overweight and becoming a basement dweller. If he didn't have a couple college classes here and there he would play TF2 all the time with no stop. I'm not saying playing TF2 is a bad thing but all day, every day is a little overkill.

Sometimes loving and toleration can reach a breaking point. I dont care what an individual looks like, but if you are a creep based on your personality, then I avoid those people. If they talk to me I am always respectful, but I keep my distance. Its good you have friends that will be by your side.

And this can be with any individual and not specifically part of the brony fandom. I have met people that dont fit the stereotype appearance wise but their personality just is  obnoxious.  Being quirky and shy does not mean one is a creep though, it the people who just wont leave you alone or brings up subjects that you rather not talk about.

Not really. I do know two people who clop, but otherwise they are really cool people, and one of them is rather popular.

What one does in the privacy of their own home should not have a negative effect on someone else. As long as they dont broadcast it to everyone constantly lol.

Many of the ponies in anthro form are really sexy. Although I dont know if it would be considered clopping if the ponies are anthrofied versions .

I think I said that wrong. I couldn't care less that they clop, it's just part of the negative stereotype.

Reading back over it I see how it could be taken as an insult to cloppers... sorry about that.

...and yes some anthro ponies are very sexy.

Those groups pretty much sum the brony fandom well.

I think my friend is starting down that path.  He's logged in 350+ hours in like 2 months.

I've met some... er, interesting bronies in the meetups I've gone to. Not in the clopper sense or whatever, I'm 100% cool with that. These guys seem to go a level further into the 'neckbeard, misogynist, social wasteroid' levels.
