Hi :D

mlp_fim_rarity_vector_by_patched_socks-dThis is an accurate depiction of how I feel about Corey Powell's episodes so far.

Let's cut the crap and get right down to business, because MLP Forums is super srs business.

Corey Powell, from what we've seen so far, has struggled writing these characters and has mediocre plotlines to try and make up for it.

2 of her episodes, "Just for Sidekicks" and "Rainbow Falls," both got the thrashing they deserved.

"Sleepless in Ponyville" had numerous flaws, as I've said a bajillion fucking times, always to be quoted and I write an essay about why that episode sucks and no one wants to play with me anymore after that.

And she's got a credit for "Inspiration Manisfestation," which, if it isn't absolutely perfect, I will be asking for her head.

Now, of course, I've said it before; if she doesn't understand how to write these characters, she shouldn't write for the show. As demonstrated in her first 3 episodes, she barely understands ANY of these great characters she has at her disposal.

Should Powell still be a writer for the show post-S4? My opinion is pretty clear, but it's still up for discussion and not set in concrete yet, especially since "Inspiration Manisfestation" is coming up.

So, what do you think?

EDIT: Added Poll :D

Eh, she's a 'meh' writer whom if didn't write for season 5, I wouldn't really care. I haven't liked any of her episodes so far, not to say I hated them or anything, they were all just dull to me. For Whom The Sweetie Belle Toils was a much better nightmare episode to me than Sleepless In Ponyville, in my opinion. I just hope she doesn't screw up Inspiration Manisfestation. But if I had to choose between letting her stay on the show staff or be kicked off, I'd pick kicked off.

I actually liked Sleepless in Ponyville and Rainbow Falls :(

But I might be biased because Rainbow Falls brought us the only shipping combo that matters: Flutterceps!

I don't think expecting perfection is fair for any episode. Even my favorite episode Pinkie Pride, and your favorite Rarity Takes Manehattan (which is in my top ten) have flaws.

I liked RF too but I can't deny that the episode's loaded with bullshit.

Still, I personally think there are worse episodes out there, and it's not like all the other writers haven't screwed up before. AKR is one of my favorites and she wrote MMMystery of the Friendship Express, one of the show's worst episodes imo

As I've said before, I quite like "Sleepless in Ponyville", and I rank it very high with the best of the series. But then "Just for Sidekicks" and "Rainbow Falls" come along and are not only bad, but seriously muck of up the character development of the main characters in both cases. It makes me wonder if the former was a fluke/had a lot of input from others.

Her next episode is focused on my two favorite characters and a relationship I hold very dear to my heart. You have this one last chance, Powell. Pray you don't disappoint me.

Seeing as Just for Sidekicks is my favorite episode of MLP, I really liked Sleepless in Ponyville, and I enjoyed Rainbow Falls and feel its highly underrated, absolutely.

All I could say is that if Inspiration Manifestation doesn't show any remarkable improvement from Corey Powell, then I do believe she needs to move on from the show as while shameful, if she isn't going to show any improvement on her work but only get worse from here on in, then I don't see a reason she should stay in favor over another more capable writer.

The better question for me is who doesn't want Dave Polsky to leave? What a remarkable turn around for him it has been this season.

I don't think expecting perfection is fair for any episode. Even my favorite episode Pinkie Pride, and your favorite Rarity Takes Manehattan (which is in my top ten) have flaws.

Of course they do.

Problem lies within the numerous flaws her episodes have; inconsistent and sloppily done characterization (see: Rarity in all, Spike in "Just for Sidekicks," and "Rainbow Falls" as a whole.) Poor pacing (both except "Sleepless in Ponyville,") and boring storylines (Good story that didn't reach its full potential, and the other two just flat out sucked.)

All and all, her general failures in the past have made it to where she's really going to have to be god-like to ease some of the frustration I have with her as a writer; also, the fact that it's a Rarity episode makes it have even more high standards, in my eyes, simply because of how she fails to write the character time and time again; at least, in consistency with how the other writers portray her.

She's going to have to really impress me here, but it has a shot at fixing my problems with her as a writer.

Of course, though, I'm going to do everything I can to ignore that she wrote this episode so I can watch it fairly :D

I would be disappointed if he left, he's been killing it recently with all four of his episodes this season being well done imo.

Oh, I should mention I feel like Powell is a take her or leave her writer. I don't care either way, but I am a little nervous about the upcoming episode still.

2 of her episodes, "Just for Sidekicks" and "Rainbow Falls," both got the thrashing they deserved.

Bleh, I thought "Just for Sidekicks" should have been better (I believe I've voiced my opinions of Spike's awful writing before: http://mlpforums.com/topic/92231-spike-the-martyr-a-complaint-about-his-terrible-writing/), and "Rainbow Falls" was undoubtedly (imho) the worst episode in the entire season--and maybe even the entire show, but I'd have to rewatch a good deal of it to say for sure.  But then again, I really enjoyed "Sleepless in Ponyville" (it's actually one of my favorites), so I'd have to let her have another shot before I decide for certain if I want her to stay or not.  If she screws up "Inspiration Manifestation", though, my decision will be made.  I can understand screwing up Spike, since they can't decide worth their 6.42-billion-dollar company (yes, I just checked) how he should be written, and Rainbow Falls  might have been a fluke, or an honest mistake with the characters (though how you could think Fluttershy is cut out for an athletic competition, I don't know), but screwing up on a well-defined and pivotal character like Rarity, nuh-uh.

tl;dr, I think we should wait and see what "Inspiration Manifestation" brings before we slap a judgment stamp on Powell.  If he pulls off something amazing, good for him!  He's back in the safe zone.  If not...*chuckles* I think @@ghostfacekiller39 here might start a riot.

Okay, I was looking through the other replies and this one caught my eye.  To be perfectly honest, I never actually considered that one.  I am now intrigued. :D That's set my gears turning...oh, pooh, but I already have two Fluttershy ships!  And it just feels weird adding yet another to the list. Oh, well.  I guess my brain will just have to get over it.  Scootch over, FlutterMoon and FlutterTwi, you've got a new bunk partner!  Her (his? its? idk) name is FlutterCeps, and you better not gang up on her like you did FlutterDash.  You two were lucky I only sort of liked FlutterDash.  So don't try anything funny. :fiery:

Yes!

How could I say no to the writer of Sleepless in Ponyville?

Especially considering how no other writer has stepped up and helped continue the relationship Corey helped establish in that episode, since then.

I'm waiting for Scootalove sisterness, Meghan. STILL.

I can when she has written her next two mediocre episodes that have stripped away whatever progress the main character had made in the series back down. Also, if she doesn't redeem herself in her next episode, then I fear 'Sleepless in Ponyville' may have been a lightning in a bottle moment for her as a writer, which I hope isn't the case.

Also, Dave Polsky wrote the superior dream episode in 'For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils' in my opinion.

Wait, how could FWtSBT go too long with Luna? That was where the meat of Sweetie's character development was in the episode, and Luna played the role of teacher. I'm confused as to why spending about six to seven minutes in the dream world is your criticism. Also, I don't think JFS is as bad as most people make it out to be, but then again I'd say the same about SaYS.

It's just me, but I kept thinking that it went on a little too long, and they could've thrown some more bits between Rarity an Sweetie Belle instead. It doesn't hurt the episode much though, and it's just a personal nit-pick

Man this is like throwing stones at "fanfiction.net" (or was it org?). The reality is MANY a writer are both talented and passionate, yet just can't adapt to particular characters.

Mrs Powell strikes me as the type of writer that does "Meat" but ignores "Cake", she dives neck deep into the main plot or main focus of a character, and just sort of glances at the supporting cast (which many of the times are the core drive behind the plot, but meh, another rant another day). You see this type of writer in Fanfiction alot, they are the type that LOOOOOVE there waifu or fav character from a show or game.

But lets get to the entire point of this thread, her treatment of Rarity. She clearly has NO understanding of this type of femine/icon/supporter type. Need another example of a poorly treated and often shallow pool dived when in truth its the deepst ocean of a character? Good read ANY fiction based around Sailor Pluto/ Setsuna Meiou, from Sailor Moon.

The reality again is this show has a very large cast of beloved characters, the girls ALL need special attention in EVERY episode. You can not just have one writer, but you need a TEAM for each episode. YES there should be one person doing Pinkie, one for AJ, etc.

But hey, thats just my two bits.

I'm willing to give her another chance but this time, she would have less episodes to write.

I think the episodes she wrote were all right but the way that they're written with crappy and idiotic characterization is what needs improving from her. She didn't understand about the characters she was writing in her episodes and she, in one way or another, screw them over and just slap the characters and muck them up like that. Sleepless in Ponyville is not really bad, it's plausible but other episodes from her like Rainbow Falls are rock bottom for her. When she's limited to only 3 episodes, 2 or 1 or if she doesn't even think about writing another episode again (at least until she familiarizes herself with the characters and understands how to write episodes RIGHT), then I'll be happy.

Oh, thanks!  Wait a sec. *reads again*

That's nearly all of the good ones! I am officially a fan of this guy.  The only problem I have is that Daring Don't laughed in the face of some fairly well-established headcanon, but other than that, I loved every episode by this guy. :D

But hey, thats just my two bits.

Well, that was quite an enlightening and welcome two bits, if you ask me.  I hadn't thought of her writing like that, but I do see what you mean.
