Flash Fire 386 April 28, 2014 Share April 28, 2014 •She's appears ashamed of her origins. No American would be. ....because no american is ever ashamed of the stuff this country does..... *eyeroll* •She actively changed her accent to sound middle class. Again, something only a Brit would do.You can't say someone would or would not do something because of where they were born/raised.• Her accent. Some say it's transatlantic, but as someone who has lived in one of the trendiest areas of London, Hampstead, you hear her accent all the time in the coffee shops and boutiquesYou also hear it through many high class areas of the US. Mars Caramel 319 April 28, 2014 Share April 28, 2014 Being a Brit myself, Rarity's accent barely sounds British to me. Lauren Faust even stated that she had thoughts of giving Rarity a British accent. But honestly, I would've liked her a lot more if she did. I always have a soft spot for multicultural characters. I can understand people being ashamed of their own culture at some point in their lives, but it's not exactly a trait to the Brits, or anyone else for that matter. CT-1138 3,182 April 28, 2014 Share April 28, 2014 Actually, Rarity's accent is deliberately modeled after Audrey Hepburn, who is known to have a Transatlantic accent. Precisely. I wouldn't say she's ashamed of her origins so much as her aspirations to make it big overshadow her upbringing. My Aunt is similar. She was born out of a middle-class southwest suburb Chicago family, the daughter of a Union plumber no less. Yet she talks with a flair and puts on airs to make herself seem posh and more high-class than she really is. The main difference between my Aunt and Rarity, though, is Rarity is very generous and not afraid to get her hooves dirty when it's required of her (though she prefers not to). Hansel 1,512 April 28, 2014 Share April 28, 2014 (edited) I have literally never heard another British English person "put on" an "middle-class" accent in real life. As several people have already pointed out, Rarity's accent doesn't actually sound English to me. I can see the resemblances, but it sounds more like she's picked it up and incorporated it into her speech later on in life. Also, her dialect is more American than British. she cant be british britan is not in equestria Also, this.^ Edited April 28, 2014 by Hansel 1 Pancakes taste like well seasoned DVD cases. Kay Dreamer 884 April 28, 2014 Share April 28, 2014 The creator of the character has directly stated that Rarity's mannerisms, verbiage and accent are modelled off those of Audrey Hepburn and are trans-atlantic. You can't just ignore that fact when it's Word Of God. She speaks in a learned trans-atlantic accent, as evidenced by the fact that her sister and parents all speak like typical Equestrians. How can she be British when the rest of her family are so obviously not? I'm fond of British accents myself and despite being Australian an over-exposure to BBC programming has left me with an odd pastiche of an accent. (I'm constantly having people ask where I'm from, it's embarrassing.) Rarity's accent is what can occur when the same thing happens to someone with an American accent. 1 The Crystal Minstrel Pony Tumblr Kay Dreamer's Roleplay OC and Cast Character Archive

Virgil 685 April 28, 2014 Share April 28, 2014 If Rarity is "British", then why do her parents talk like this? In all honesty I don't think she is ashamed of where she is from in general, but she is someone that is concerned with high society, which means she would of course learn to speak in a very posh and proper manner. And given the Audrey Hepburn inspiration for her character it likely means we have a bit of a "My Fair Lady" scenario. So she likely got elocution lessons from the MLP equivalent of Rex Harrison's character Prof. Higgins: ...Now I want a Rarity episode featuring her elocution teacher ... 3 I know there's a place you walkedWhere love falls from the treesMy heart is like a broken cupI only feel right on my knees.I spit out like a sewer holeYet still receive your kissHow can I measure up to anyone nowAfter such a love as this? Heh, Hatfield is the arse pit of Hertfordshire. x'D The bus company is actually independent, but the uni has some kind of deal with them, so students and staff get a fair discount, and there's a free shuttle service that runs between the campuses and car parks... which is always handy. 1 Pancakes taste like well seasoned DVD cases. (I'm constantly having people ask where I'm from, it's embarrassing.) Rarity's accent is what can occur when the same thing happens to someone with an American accent. Yeah, I'm from Texas and was at my Grandparent's for several of my formative years 3-5 ( roughly ); and the only stuff they had to watch was old musicals (e.g. Roger & Hammerstein, My Fair Lady ), and most of the actors were either British and/or had trans-Atlantic accents. So despite my parents sounding very much like Texans, I speak in a mostly trans-Atlantic accent ( though I can switch to a very Texas accent when needed or funsies ). So I guess that makes me a "Rarity" . Orablanco Account 3,707 April 28, 2014 Share April 28, 2014 (edited) Nope. As we can clearly see in and hear in "Sisterhooves Social", her parents sound like they just flew in from Fargo, which leads me to believe that she is, in actuality, Canadian or from the northernmost regions of North America, or whatever the pony equivalent of that is. She only has a Trans-Atlantic English accent because she's modeled herself after the unicorns of Canterlot and that lifestyle. Not to say that she's "fake", per se, but she definitely built her personality from the ground up when she was younger. Hope that doesn't retread what others have said. *reads @'s posts* Son of a Richie Rich. Edited April 28, 2014 by CITRUS KING46 1 Onwards to my DeviantArt page! Sig by the illustrious Kyoshi! Red Cedar 1,408 April 28, 2014 Share April 28, 2014 You just need to listen to Rarity's parents talk to know she's not British herself. Rarity uses the Mid-Atlantic (or Transatlantic) accent.
