Discord is NOT Star Swirl [#dealwithit]

The comics have confirmed that Star Swirl was Celestia's magical counsel just before the Celestia/Luna rift, which was after the rise and fall of Discord.  He was also stated to have been "gone" for hundreds of years, not a thousand.  This means that he lived long after the banishment of Nightmare Moon.  The trading cards say the same thing.

 

Ok, the comics and TCs =/= the show.  So everything you've said about the comics is meaningless.  Until they directly reference the comics in the show, there is no point in even wasting anyone's time trying to use them as a talking point for the show.  Moving on.

 

 

 

Before somepony tries to say those aren't canon, so they can hold on to this ridiculous theory; I don't need the comics to disprove it.  That's just the easiest way to do so.  Discord admitted to never having a friend before Fluttershy.  This means that he could not be Star Swirl, because Star Swirl had Clover the Clever.  Yes, a student would count as a friend.

 

I don't know why, but people assumed that not fully understanding friendship means you have no friends.  That's like saying that somepony who can't figure out the square route of 546 can't do basic addition and subtraction.  Are you seeing why this is a problem?

 

 

The two are completely different.  This is grasping at straws at best, because:

 

1 - We've never SEEN Starswirl in the show.  So anything said about who he is or isn't is speculation at best.  Until he talks to Twilight face to face and flat-out TELLS her what he knows and what he doesn't know, that's all it will ever be.

 

2 - If you don't know the meaning of something, then how can you even know whether you have that thing or not?  

 

3 - An assistant is not necessarily a friend from the superior's frame of reference.  Bear in mind that Twilight started out exactly the same way as Starswirl's in-show canon description.  Other ponies tried to be her friend and she was pretty much a shut-in with Spike as her assistant.  She didn't even start calling him a friend until later, after she had already learned about friendship.  I even remember a line in the show that implied (read:  PRACTICALLY TOLD US) that she didn't have any friends until the rest of the mane 6 came along.  So it is still very possible that Starswirl was indeed in the same situation.  Clover may have thought of Starswirl as a friend, but that doesn't mean Starswirl considered him a friend.  He probably considered him an assistant and had alot of respect for him, but that's different from considering someone a friend.

 

 

Now that said, do I think Discord is Starswirl?  No, not at all.  I think Discord is just a Chaotic-Neutral dude with alot of power.  I can't prove this (so headcanons can still remain for now), but I just can't imagine that would ever be a thing in the show.

 

But I would strongly suggest using better evidence than mere conjecture if you're trying to debunk peoples' theories.

Go right ahead.  Multiverse theory is canon in this show, so you could say that's how things turned out in another universe.

So let me get this straight.  You are taking a line of dialogue to mean two separate universes are canon.  By that logic, I could say the same thing about the Pokémon Anime and Manga.  I won't, because it doesn't make sense for them to be canon with one another.

 

Besides, the show and comics have already contradicted each other on numerous occasions (not the least of which was regarding Nightmare Moon).  So they can't be canon with one another, no matter how you look at it.  Canon would imply that the exact same events that happen in one happen in the other.  But because of these contradictions that is completely impossible, unless you're going to retcon things that happened in the show or comics.  And if that happens, then well, that's just bad writing and I doubt the writers would go that far to make it canon.  Not only would that divide the fanbase (again), but that would be borderline offensive if they did that.

 

Again, until Starswirl and Twilight meet face to face (I'm not ruling out that possibility), there is no evidence of who he is or isn't, other than hearsay.  Therefore, it is still ok to have headcanon.

I'll wait for it to be brought up in the show (if ever). Nothing is true until Meghan McCarthy writes it. I'm sure they've left some discrete hole open for the possibility of Starswirl and Discord being the same person/pony/thing if they do plan to do something like that. If not, doesn't matter. It would be cool though.

Supposedly Tireks Brother was befriended Starswirl the Bearded. However Tirek doesn't even mention the fact that Discord was a friend or his brother and neither does discord. Not to mention the fact that he knows who discord is when Starswirl was supposedly in the same timeline

 

I always thought Discord and Star Swirl are indeed separate characters. We don't want a Star Wars-like "Darth Vader killed Anakin Skywalker but he is also your father" type thing. That honestly sounds too convenient.
