Ariel had made the magical cushion construct as Joyfire and Rising had jumped... It was meant to be quick thinking, since moving the mattress would have taken too long, since she had intended to catch the two and make a safe landing for them... But, oh well...

Precisely! Ariel was trying to soften the fall for Joyfire and Rising, who both jumped before Riley had the chance to get the mattress out (since he was in the process of doing so, but Joyfire went full speed ahead anyway).
