gaming Favorite Rogue-Like Games?

So, if you don't know what a Rogue-like game is.. It's basically a game where if you die you start over. Personally, these games offer a fun challenge and a different experience.

A good example (and my favorite) is Rogue Legacy, where you choose a random character, and fight your way til' death through a random castle. Once you die, you choose a new character with different traits and go from there. This is a great example of a Rogue-like experience.

So, what are your favorites? :3

Ooh, my favorite genre when I'm feeling masochistic! If it's just a light feeling I usually go for Rogue Legacy, but if I really need to feel punished I play FTL on hard difficulty. And then there's Dwarf Fortress...

Oh and I forgot The Binding of Isaac! It's getting a little too easy for me lately but I still love it!

I play FTL on hard difficulty.

Oh, FTL on hard mode..

I still have nightmares about my first run on hard.

Only one I can think of is desktop dungeons so I guess I choose that?!?!?!

Desktop Dungeons looks cool. Don't have it, although I think I might check it out sooner or later.

The Binding of Isaac is my favorite. So many items and combinations make the game feel endlessly replayable. I can't wait for Isaac: Rebirth.

Also, Spelunky. It's challenging, has tons of cool secrets, a pretty good soundtrack, and is just great in general.

Roguelikes are one of my favorite genres. Unfortunately they take a lot of patience and I'm not one to enjoy restarting things over and over again so they don't get a lot of playtime from me. I just love their concept so much. When I'm in the mood for them, I adore them.

Roguelikes I love:

Baroque

Izuna 2: The Unemployed Ninja

Dark Cloud

Roguelikes I still need to dedicate more time to:

Fatal Labyrinth

I know there's more to each of these lists but I can't think of them at the moment. I have, of course, played the original Rogue and another Roguelike that was almost exactly like it but with a little more exploration and actual NPCs to talk to. Don't remember what it was called though.

Izuna is more of a old school dungeon crawler though.

God damn it, I love those games.

There comes a point when the difference between being this genre and that genre are negligible and a game could easily be called both. Izuna carries so many Roguelike elements that I'd have to be mad not to call it one.

No permadeath (big point).

You lose all your items, but that's it.

Random-generated dungeons, I guess, but that's it

If that were the case then none of the Roguelikes that were ever called Roguelikes are not actually Roguelikes. Games like Baroque, Dark Cloud and Izuna don't start the entire game over if you die but they do take something away. Usually items and equipment you had gained. Sometimes all of your levels as well.

The difference is minimal so for all intents and purposes these games are considered Roguelikes still.

---

I should go on the record and say I don't think I've ever actually played a dungeon crawling game but as I understand it these are the features of a Roguelike:

Permadeath (of some sort) defined as losing everything you had with you, sometimes your level progress too

Randomized floors

A stamina/hunger meter of some sort

Degradable weapons and items whose effects or purpose are unknown until they are used or identified

Limited inventory space

Any Roguelike features many, if not all, of these features. Permanent death is usually in them in some form or another but not strictly making you restart the entire game each time, just the current dungeon. That can be attested to the difficulty of a game more than it can the definition of it's genre.

Izuna has all of these things except that when you die, you just start the dungeon over. The slight alteration of death can't, or at least shouldn't, change it's entire genre definition.
