All Good Things …

Effective April 10th, by 9th anniversary of jointing this forum, I will be permanently stepping down as a Community Administrator here, and quietly riding off into the sunset as a member of this wonderful community. I’m taking measures so that my discord account will be inaccessible to me. Only four people on here have my current one.    My time here as a member of MLPF was a remarkable one. I have met my closest friends, people who I will continue to engage long after I leave this site.

Grammar Rant 01

It bothers me when people are imprecise with their writing. Consider the use of the conjunctions OR and AND. You will see sentences of the form: A or B and C or D. Without parentheses this is ambiguous. Let’s examine the various possible interpretations. Let the circle with a cross represent a logic bit that can be true or false. I like to think of it as a normally-open contact, as in a motor control logic. The lines are a flow path. Think of them like a wire in a circuit. Reading from left

Cozy Glow Update

It’s starting to come together. For those that are new, as we raised over $2000 for BC Children’s Hospital the community voted for me to cosplay as Cozy Glow.    This is what I have already.      There are a few other items. I’ve decided to age up Cozy Glow because playing a character that young seems … all sorts of problematic. There will me a makeup element as well.    The con is a few weeks away. This is going to be … amusing for many of you … I’m sure. All

Why Tau is better than Pi

I'm writing this on Pi Day, but I think pi makes no sense as a fundamental mathematical constant, and it's used only because of force of habit. The circle is defined as the set of points on the plane with a given distance to the center. That distance is the radius. So the "circle constant" should be defined using the radius, not diameter. It has been proposed that this constant would be denoted by the Greek letter tau. Tau is equal to 2*pi. The full angle (360 degrees) in radians is on

Another Strange Dream Featuring Rikifive

Yeah, I had another weird pony dream, another dream where I was a younger version of myself, and another dream where Rikifive's name came up. This time, he wasn't "Rikifiveguy". I was watching this episode of MLP: FiM with my sister that was titled "Rikifive" for some reason. The only things I remember while watching it were this weird opening sequence where Discord turns Shaggy from Scooby-Doo into a plant and this scene where a 3D-animated Twilight was talking to this robot shark with a full s

X-Women

When I was a young kid, about 7 or so I think, my parents gave me two VHS tapes of the 90's X-Men: The Animated Series as a gift.  These tapes were titled Creators' Choice, volumes 1 and 2.  These were the tapes including these round table discussions at the beginning, in case any of you old timers remember that: These volumes contained the first four episodes of the series.  Volume 1 was Night of the Sentinels part 1 and 2, and volume 2 was Enter Magneto and Deadly Reunions.  These two t

So you think one bit is the smallest possible portion of information?

I've read about this in an old book about Bridge (the card game). The example below is a modified version of the one used in that book. There are 3 people (including you) sitting by the table, and every one of them gets a card. There are 2 black cards and one red card, and for some reason you want to know who has the red card. The cards are lying on the table, face down. So, how much information do you need to know who has the red card? By definition, the amount of information (in bits

From the Journal of Frostbite

[It's a leather-bound book, tucked in the back of some minor possessions left at Canterlot Castle. The hornwriting is rushed with sharp penstrokes.]   First night away. The princess requested more ponies for this mission than I expected. They all look cheerful, relaxed, and chatty, like they’ve done this before, and they probably have. This is probably run of the mill for them. They know what they’re doing. That’s why they look at me like – that. They can see right through me. The

My great-aunt by marriage passed away from cancer last week.

Hello pony fans aka bronies, this is Allen. Yet another loss of a relative for me. My great-aunt by marriage passed away from cancer last week, so can you send your condolences to their family? She was my maternal grandmother's sister-in-law. I will be attending the funeral tomorrow and Saturday to pay her a visit laying in state. It was the Tran family for this loss.

-1/12

Some time ago there was some controversy across the Internet whether 1+2+3+4+... = -1/12 or not. Here's what I think about this: Clearly, this sum diverges to infinity, so you can't assign any finite value to it, using the standard math rules. But there is a way to associate this value with this sum, which uses some advanced concepts that I don't fully understand, like analytic continuation, Riemann zeta function, and Ramanujan summation. So I did something different. First, I took the

Nontroversies

This is my first ever blog on this site that is going to be somewhat of a vent. Who here is tired of nontroversies? Who here is tired of everything needing to be "controversial"? I know, this is absolutely nothing new. But it's something that continues to grow ever more baffling. The world sucks right now, worse than it ever has in modern history, yet as it continues to get worse, people continue to get better at creating non-issues. Look at all the real ones we have. It's growing ever more diff

Snowfall

This entry will be somewhat different.  I just experienced something extraordinary, and I wanted to write it down while it's fresh. At about 5 am, I pulled back the curtains on my kitchen window and peeked out.  Expecting to see drizzling rain, I was surprised to see snow, which is rare in my area.  But what left me awed and transfixed was just how hauntingly beautiful this perfect scene was.  I watched large, fluffy snowflakes slowly and softly falling in the eerily still, deathly silent p

Episode 117 - Sneezing

Hey.  Y'know what really grinds my gears?  Sneezing.  Oh, damn, does this one grind my gears to a f*cking halt. I sneeze more than most people.  I don't have any specific, acute allergies, just more sneezing than average.  I don't really mind sneezing too much, but it's the inevitable, annoying chore than comes afterward.  I absolutely cannot sneeze without then blowing my nose afterwards.  It is completely impossible.  Many a time I have tried to resist.  I'll sneeze and then sit there say
