A question to @, do you have any particular story preferences? Perhaps there are certain characters you seem to resonate more with than others, which definitely could have an impact in how sad a story might be to you. -

Recently I got into reading Twilight x Dash stories, and there are a whole bunch of sad ones in there. I recommend http://www.fimfiction.net/story/1006/decay , http://www.fimfiction.net/story/54642/progress , and http://www.fimfiction.net/story/43033/dream-of-me Be prepared to bawl your eyes out, I didn't myself, but I was surely close to doing so. -
Know how ya feel. I used to write fanfiction (and I still do from time to time) for a couple of years, but not in MLP. I wrote some stuff for Teen titans and mainly for Sonic the Hedgehog. I am thinking of doing something for MLP but I'm not sure yet. -
Cool beans. Let me know when you publish the first chapter on that, I'll be glad to read it for you and give my thoughts, since I've been getting into the fanfiction recently.

I'm not sure if I would do that in the show. Remember the original intended viewership for the show, being younger girls. I don't know if they really want to insert relationships and shipping into the show like that. I mean I guess it could be done harmlessly, but I pretty much doubt that they would do it. However, if they did do it, Rarity would definitely be the first to experience this, since they had hinted at in multiple times throughout the show. -
I think that pretty much all of Ponyville and Equestria know the good that they've done, but rather than treat them like celebrities and such, maybe they prefer to treat them like normal people because that's what they want. The only ones I could see who would really enjoy the huge crowds and be okay with it are Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, and maybe to an extent Rarity. I suppose that they are just treated down to earth because that's what they'd like to be seen as. Although this might change a bit with Twilight as an alicorn now.

It sounds more like your other friend is an attention seeker if anything. I'm not trying to insult them, but it just gives off those signs of that. I used to know people like that, and while they were my friends and all, it was quite annoying from time to time. The other thing is that they might be just very sensitive people. There are people like that, myself included, although I may not show it on the outside as much.
