Oh, this is my kind of thread!!!! I personally love anime; I can't get enough of it. Everytime I finish one, I just feel like starting new one already. There's just somthing...addicting about it. You could say it is like MLP. I was curious in MLP, and the second I started it I was addicted. I couldn't get enough. One of the main reasons is the art style. It is just so amazing how the Japanese illustrate these shows, and put so much work into them, that they can make a drawing of a one on one sword fight, look immensely intense. Sure, sometimes they'll use 3D CGI, but it's only used for moments containing something on a massive scale. And they always look great!!! So, yes, animation is definitely one of the best things about anime, but that alone would not give it the popularity it has earned today. Now, the Japanese way of storytelling and the American way of storytelling are quite different to say the least. American storytelling generally uses the four-act structure. At 1: The characters and main protagonist's goals are firmly established. Act 2:shows the characters(s) find a small obstacle in reaching the goal it is an easy conflict though. Act 3:the protagonist makes a mistake and lets the antagonist win a victory. All hope is lost. In Act 4 the protagonist makes a comeback, and defeats the villain and they return to their normal lives. Japanese storytelling, however generally follows a five act structure. Act 1: The protagonist lives his/her everyday life, everything is normal and things couldn't be better(or worse, depending on the character) Act 2: introduces conflict and dilemma Act 3 is the climax. Act 3:the drama of the story is greatly intensified and tries to appeal emotionally to the viewer. Act 4: eases down the drama from previous act. Act 5: Winds back down and everything goes back to normal. Protagonist goes back to her/his daily life. There are many differences between the storytelling of each culture, maybe some people just like the Japanese way better. I for one love it. I just love the fakeness of how it starts, to the way it drastically changes course almost suddenly. Other than that though, thy are pretty similar. In both ways the character is introduced with conflict, the conflict deals with drama, emotion, the character(s) defeat the conflict, and everything goes back to normal. It's just the way that these situations are presented to us...that intrigues us. Now, I'm pretty sure I know the main reason some people hate on anime the way they do. Porn. Yeah, pornography...hentai. In Japanese, hentai is the word meaning pervert. And, obviously the industry has a lot of it. There are many different types of anime, hentai is a VERY small portion of it, but it's very much still there. But, think about it, all they do, we do with most of our entertainment anyways... *cough *cough cloppers. Far too friendly fan art. All they are doing is trying to appeal to the demographic of people who want something dirty. (Admit it, that's all of us. XD) I won't delve any more into the subject, I just thought it had to be talked about. Now, let's talk the types of anime. One of the best things about anime is the fact that the Japanese see anime(Japanese for any type of animation) Japanese see anime as an art form. Americans mostly...just mostly see it as a form of entertainment for children. Anime is used for children, for teenagers, adults, all demographics. They can be comedies, they can be romantic comedies, they can be dramas, they can be all out action animes, some can have a mix of all genres. Also they are vary varied and different with every anime they make, whether it's the setting, time period, etc... These are the reasons I watch anime and love it!!!! I hope I shed some light on why anime is so damn popular, and hope more people will get into it! If you read through all this, I appreciate it, and I hope I answered your question!!!!
