And the grand finale of Best of the Super Juniors 2025 goes down tomorrow. A reshuffling of the status quo and an attack of the new generation are now guaranteeing us a first time winner this year.
After the nasty split of Roppongi 3K, Yohei 'YOH' Kamatsu has gone through a 4 year journey of reinvention and discovery. It all looked like it'd pay off in the last winter BotSJ of 2021, where he recovered from a four match slump to make the finals, but to no avail. Now through multiple new tag partners and a discovery of his aloof, artistic and weirdly affectionate side, YOH has blended the tradtional NJPW grappling style with classic moves from his mentors, most notably his twist on the anaconda vice from Hiroyoshi Tenzan, which netted him victory over last years winner and current champ, EL Desperado. Now it feels like YOH is finally putting the pieces together before more of his career is behind him than in front of him.
In the opposite block was the surprise success story. Kosei Fujita was adopted/abducted by the punks in orange, TMDK, in 2023. And after his excursion to Australia under the tutelage of Robbie Eagles, he came back as the Japanese young punk, now blending the speed of Eagles and the technicality of Zack Sabre Jr. He did decently well in his first ever outing last year and won Super jr. Tag League with Eagles and capturing the Jr. tag titles, becoming the youngest to do both. 'You'll make a good junior champion one day' Fujita said of his sempais and senseis. But he responded 'Why does it have to be one day? Why not now?" With that attitude and his new finisher in the form of a torture rack DDT, Fujita's confidence and cunning have made him the youngest finalist in tournament history, and perhaps the youngest winner.
So who do you think is gonna win and be the new face of the division?
