I remember struggling a lot with developing my own style in both ponies and people. My advice is to just practice some more, and try out different things. When I first started drawing cartoon people, I really tried to mimic anime, because that was what all the people around me drew. It just didn't feel natural to me, and made me very frustrated when it didn't come out 'right'. Eventually, I just started doing my own thing, and, in some cases, pulling aspects of things I liked from other people's art and just experimenting. It's something that tends to come with time - as you get more comfortable with it, you tend to be more relaxed when it comes to branching out and trying your own stuff.
If you're looking to pick up digital, do some research, and pick what you think would be best for you. Some people jump straight into buying tablets, whereas I used (and still do use) a mouse in MS Paint. I'm contemplating getting a tablet soon, but still lean towards what I enjoy using/find easy to use. In short: Don't stress too much about instantly have a distinctive style, and just experiment a bit. Put some thought into how you want to pick up digital, and remember that it requires just as much (if not more) practice than traditional.
