Sweets 198 June 4, 2014 Share June 4, 2014 (edited) I was talking to a friend of mine who is a furry and he considers us Bronies to be furries, but personally I dislike the fandom because of all the ahem, shenanigans that go on. What do you think? I have been a Furry long before I have been a Brony. I rather dislike the thought of people lumping folks that don't have the same mindset furries do as furries. Not because I'm elitist, but I hate when people force a fandom into another category. Bronies may be Furries and Furries may be Bronies but Bronies are not always Furries and Furries are not always Bronies. As for the shenanigans... Yiffers are the Cloppers of the Furry world, and like Cloppers, the media likes to put special attention on them, making the Furry fandom look like a bunch of perverts, as well as the Bronies. Furries are wonderful people, they can be a bit hard shelled and protective, but once they warm up to you they're very sweet. It's like saying a Furry hates Bronies because of our 'shenanigans' like the BABSCon incident or the dude who was so enamored with Twilight he got engaged to his custom plushie. We really should be standing together, and instead of asking ourselves 'How are we different from them?' we should ask 'Why aren't we being there for each other as misunderstood groups of folks?' Ribbonfree 2,383 June 4, 2014 Share June 4, 2014 There are some key differences between the fandoms and people from both sides don't want to associate with the other side, but operationally there are some similarities. Both have a very strong basis in fan produced content of all types, dedicated conventions, have notable drama bombs separate from the general spectrum of nerdy activities, and attract a diverse crowd from all walks of life. I think it's easy to say that there's a definite distinction at this point, but a friend and I speculate the differences may start becoming less and less notable as time passes. And I am personally sort of a furry, myself. I don't really follow their scene but I have a dedicated fursona for the fun of having one.
Quinnton117 13 June 5, 2014 Share June 5, 2014 (edited) I've personally never understood fandom on fandom bullying. When it boils down to it, all fandoms are the same. As far as the whole Bronies = Furries thing, yes, you can be a furry if you're a brony. Furries share a common love of all things anthropomorphic (Giving human characteristics to non-human creatures/things. i.e. tiny horses that can talk). However, the inverse is not true, you can't be a brony just by being a furry. Think of Furry as the meta-fandom for all things anthropomorphic and brony as another branch in the tree. The whole Anti-Brony movement that's supposed to be a big thing in furry is blown way out of proportion. My ponysuit gets so many hugs, pictures, and bro-hoofs at fur cons. I've so far only met one furry who is so furiously anti-brony he storms out of the room and away from me when I show up in ponysuit. Edited June 5, 2014 by Quinnton117 1 Curious about ponysuits? Ziggy + Angel + Rain 11,302 June 5, 2014 Share June 5, 2014 (edited) I've never considered myself a "furry," but I went through a relatively brief phase where I sought to peruse and collect furry-type art of a fairly naughty nature. I recall that I was drawn, specifically, to hoofed / anthro horse girls. I've also crushed on many animated non-human types throughout my life; cartoon mouse ladies and the like. Also, in general, I don't think that Brony = furry. Edited June 5, 2014 by PegaMister "It uses the faculty of what you call imagination. But that does not mean making things up. Wade Barrett 111 June 5, 2014 Share June 5, 2014 I really cannot take anyone seriously when their reason for disliking the furry fandom is the "bad stuff". Because, yes, as we ALL know, the Brony fandom is a bastion of innocence and purity and stuff like clop pictures, clopfics and various other disgusting fanfictions, pictures and videos do not exist whatsoever. At all. Completely. What. So. Ever. And i'm a furry in the sense that I draw artwork (Not yiff, so get your minds out of the bloody gutwork) and write stories involving anthropomorphic creatures. No, i'm not a fursuiter nor do I really interact with the fandom. And I don't give two shits if anyone hates me because of it. Get off your goddamn high horses. Sound Variations 264 June 5, 2014 Share June 5, 2014 I'm a furry minus the suit. I've met other furries and from my experience and what I've heard. Furries are pretty nice people, you know like "Normal" people. Which begs the question. Why do you people even care? So far nobody has gave me a reasonable answer. Wade Barrett 111 June 5, 2014 Share June 5, 2014 I really don't care if you like the "bad stuff" or not. Do what you want. I refuse to judge people based on what they like (Something quite a few people in this thread should do before their minds narrow to the point where they physically cannot muster up a thought or else their brains would literally explode into a pink, porridge-like mass.) I just get irritated when Bronies criticise the furry fandom and they almost always bring up "the bad side". Both fandoms are as guilty as the other one for creating some truly horrendous stuff and for creating yiff/clop stuff. Let's not pretend furries are moral degenerates or whatever because of it. There are distinct differences between the fandoms but the creation of "the bad stuff" (You've got me saying it now) is one thing that both fandoms have in common. 3 "It is a Yorkshire habit to say what you think with blunt frankness." - Frances Hodgson Burnett THEY CALLED ME THE BIG FELLAH. Luna the Great of all the Russias 2,985 June 5, 2014 Share June 5, 2014 I happened to like this particular webcomic some years ago which had anthropomorphic characters but I don't think it would have counted me being a furry because I was not really involved in the furry community and there weren't any other furry content that I was interested in. Today I definitely don't identify myself as a furry. I don't think I really have an opinion on furries; it's another fandom. Pony Art Thread Brony since ~25 July of 2011. I honestly didn't realize Furries got that much crap from Bronies (fairly new to the fandom, myself). But that does strike me as hypocritical if they cite things like that. Stuff like that exists in many, many fandoms. I, for one, would never criticize you or look down on you simply for drawing / enjoying Furry art or what have you. I don't even really understand the prejudice. "It uses the faculty of what you call imagination. But that does not mean making things up. Washougal_Otaku 1,020 June 5, 2014 Share June 5, 2014 They are not necessarily one in the same. They CAN be related, but aren't a guarantee. As I see furries, they are humans who get in touch with a certain animal-istic personality that they feel defines them, and choose to represent that through costume, and sometimes behavior. A particularly "established" behavior is what has created the sub-group called "Yiffy." While some bronies do these thing as well, most of us don't. We do what we do because we love a character. I sure as hell don't think I'm a pink female pony who loves parties and can break the fourth wall, but that's my favorite character. As such, I will do costumes based off of her, as a sign of flattery and admiration. This does not make me a furry. I can make a similar argument for another cosplay that I've done for a few years now: Sailor Neptune. I originally did this character as a demonstration of my love and dedication for my ex (bad decision, it would've seemed). As a male, some would classify me as transgender, simply because of cross-dressing. I think it's based on "why." I didn't do it for some cockamamie theory that I'm a woman in a man's body; I did it for a demonstration, and then for the LOLs. Do people who dress up as the Wolf Man for Halloween count as furries? No. It's the same idea here. :comeatus: Gimme some time to come up with something new, okay? MUCH LOVES!!!
Amber Rays 42 June 5, 2014 Share June 5, 2014 Once viewed myself as a furry a while back ago, but never was able to find a place within the fandom myself. Always feeling like an outsider looking in, even if I may have already been in. However it wasn't apparent to me. You could've called me a stranger. However do I consider myself a furry today? No I do not. Between my lack of experiences with their fanbase and my closest friend's very negative experiences with their fanbase, I will not call myself a furry. Ever. Simple as that. Though regardless, I will hold no ill feelings towards furries and the like. Cause if that's what they wish to take part in and call themselves, all the more power to them. I feel that it's just not something for me. As for bronies being furries, I see us as more of a sub-species only by definition. Still intercompatible to some degree, but still two completely seperate organisms. Then again, that's just my two bits on that matter. Opinions may and will differ that's totally fine.
