So yesterday DJ and Voice Actor Casey Kasem Died yesterday at age 82. He is from Detroit- which I live about a half hour from.

He's best known for hosting the American Top 40 radio countdown until 2004. He also was the original long time voice of Shaggy from the Scooby Doo cartoons.

I can't believe it's been 10 years since he hosted the radio show. I used to listen to it when I was a kid (late 90's/early00's) quite a bit. Even though I started to not care too much for the music on it into the early 00's I still liked to listen to it because of him. He had a nice voice that was just nice to listen too. He would also tell information about the artists in the countdown which was cool. I always also thought he kind of sounded like Shaggy even before I found out he did his voice.

Anyway it seemed that he was a really good guy overall and thought it was worth mentioning.

Are there any of you guys who used to listen to his radio show somewhat regularly at some point?

@,

I've caught parts of classic American Top 40 countdowns from Casey Kasem's first 1970-1988 stint on the local oldies and "play anything" stations. It can be interesting to listen to the tidbits of trivia between songs, find out where songs were in their chart runs in that given week, and hear songs which were big hits in their time but are never played nowadays. One of the things I and my family try to do when we start listening in the middle of a classic countdown is try to guess which year it's from based on the songs being played (before the day and year is announced).

I don't think I've ever heard a classic countdown in its entirety, though; they usually start too early in the morning, and it can be tiring to sit through all the commercials, as well as the songs which I've never heard of and don't particularly care for. When I do catch part of a classic countdown, it usually ends up being the top 10 or so, which is fine with me, since the top 10 hits tend to be more recognizable and enjoyable, or at least more interesting.

@Music Chart Fan, I don't think I've ever listened to a full countdown either. It was a pretty long show. Sometimes scanning through the radio stations on the way back from my cottage I'll find an old rerun of the countdown and listen to it for a while.

If he were still alive and doing the show I probably wouldn't listen to it because I don't care for most current music that would be on the show. I really have to go on a hunt to find newer music that I like.
