What do you think determines the color of a unicorn's magic?

I did notice SweetieBelle had the color of green in her magic. Her eyes are green, so that works. However the magic does suit certain colors in others sometimes. It is interesting. I've never thought about it before. You might be on to something.

I assume that like any other physical trait present in any other creature that the color of a unicorns magic aura is determined by some kind of gene which determines the color of the aura at birth.

 

Whether it changes over time is unclear really, it so far appears not, but we haven't really had a ton of references to go off, but for now I think it doesn't.

 

Most of the auras seem to be eye color, but since that isn't the case with all I suppose it's probably just some gene, I mean if they have a gene for other traits, I suppose auras can be included. Makes sense to me atleast.

It might be some genetics involved, Shining and Twilight had similar colors if i recall. But then i'm not so sure because Sweetie belle and Rarity have different colors entirely. Maybe it also has something to do with their personality or nature because when Trixie used the Alicorn amulet it's power corrupted her mind and her magic went a strong, blood red.

I kinda think its something to do with the cutie mark. Twilight has a pink star as her cutie mark and her magic is pink. Rarity has blue gems and her magic is blue. Cadence has a blue crystal heart-Blue magic.

This actually makes sense, though this isn't the case for Trixie and Sunset Shimmer (and more)

I dunno....I always saw the magic as matching the eyes. Rarity's magic is closer to the color of her eyes than her cutie mark - and it was closer to purple in S1, and her eyes have always been closer to that gorgeous shade of blue

I don't think that the characters see the aura, rather it is a convention to let the viewers understand what's going on.

Cadence: Crystal Heart Blue Magic Aura

Twilight: Purple Star Light purple magic aura

Shining Armor: Shield with pink Pink magic Aura

Does that mean (if most of us agrees) that Sweetiebelle's cutie mark will have some kind of green in it? We (most of us) say that it either comes from eye color or cutie mark color(s). Right? Do you see what I'm getting at? No more hints.

I think that a unicorn's magic aura color has to do with what part of their brain they use to do magic. The pony's default color is based on their strongest area of magic, kind of like your strongest Socionics function determines your personality. It is the area where the unicorn will utilize first, and the most for each spell. The strength of each area is due to practice, genetics, and external influences. 

Magic with a dark aura is cast with a specific area that is universally associated with negative intentions.

Probably genes, although it's pretty certain that magical aura color matches eye color. There are a bunch of good posts on that page comparing the two.
