BEST PMMM MAGICAL GIRL?

hint: it's kyoko

This thread is so you PMMM (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) people can argue about who the best magical girl in the show is. We already have a Madoka general thread for posting images and the like but this thread is so you can all argue about who the best one is so you don't jam it onto 64% of my statuses. Look, we even have a poll.

If you don't know what Madoka Magica is, it's a show about girls that form contracts to become Magical Girls, warriors that fight witches in exchange for one wish. It's a really super happy bubbly show that i'm sure you'll all love, you can just google the first episode. It's twelve episodes long, with three movies (Note: If you watched the anime skip the first two movies they're just recaps. The third movie is a direct sequel to the anime, and it's called The Rebellion Story. You can just google it to find it if you want to watch it too).

Here are what the characters look like with a brief description.

Madoka Kaname

Madoka_Kaname.png

Meet Madoka, who is the main character of the show. She's an eighth grader who is in general, sweet, kind, and always tries her best. Her main weapon is the Rose Branch Bow. She's the ranger of the Holy Quintet.

Sayaka Miki

Sayaka_Miki.png

This is Sayaka Miki, Madoka's best friend who is also an eighth grader. She has a strong sense of justice but has a tendency to punch first, ask questions later. She uses cutlasses (Curved Swords) as her main weapon. She's the swordsman of the Holy Quintet.

Mami Tomoe

Mami_Tomoe.png

Meet Mami Tomoe. Mami is a ninth grader, who is a veteran Magical Girl. She is good friends with Kyubey, and always puts others before herself. She has a strong sense of sympathy. Her main weapons are ribbons and muskets. She's the gunman of the Holy Quintet.

Homura Akemi

Homura_Akemi.png

This is Homura Akemi, one of the more mysterious characters of the show. She rarely shows emotion and has a strong desire to stop Madoka from turning into a Magical Girl for some reason. She recently transferred into Madoka's class. Her main weapon is apparently a shield and a variety of guns, bombs, and rockets. She's the demoman of the Holy Quintet.

Kyoko Sakura

300px-Kyouko_character_art.png?201102052

Meet Kyoko Sakura, a veteran Magical Girl that came to Madoka's city to claim the city as her turf. She is rude, brash, and only seems to care for herself. She hates it when people waste food and she is rarely seen without some form of food on her. Her main weapon is a spear that can break down into a deadly whip. She's the paladin / knight of the Holy Quintet.

Nagisa Momoe / Bebe / Charlotte

800px-634512.jpg?20131104203955

This is the youngest Magical Girl, Nagisa Moemoe, Bebe, or Charlotte. First introduced in The Rebellion Story, Nagisa is obsessed with cheese. Charlotte and Bebe are other names for her and her different... "forms". Really, I can't say much without spoiling anything. Nagisa's weapon is a trumpet that summons cheese zombies and bubbles. She's not exactly 'part' of the Holy Quintet, but has helped them out on multiple occasions and is seen as the mage / necromancer of the Quintet.

Kyubey

madoka-1.png

Also known as Satan. Nobody likes him.

So there we go. Mods, if you feel the need, feel free to move this / rename it / whatever. I would prefer if you didn't merge it though.

Well, we never got so much of a view of Madoka as a magical girl, she just went around saving magical girls. Mami was a badass, but she died way too early, so she's somewhat a mystery. Sayaka went crazy because she couldn't handle the power of being a magical girl. Homura, while her backstory was still interesting, wasn't my favorite because for no other reason than that Kyoko Sakura is my favorite. I'll vote for Kyoko.

"Also known as Satan" LOL

Also, why did you put this was a "happy, bubbly" show? This is the most brutal anime EVER. The feels were strong in this one...

Kyoko for me. I love her design, and seeing pictures of her around here was one of the things that got me interested in checking out the show. She also reminds me of Rainbow Dash. They both have that fierce spunky quality to them and I love it

Ooooh, must you make me choose?! I love Mami Tomoe, Homura Akemi, and Nagisa Momoe!

Honestly though, I must pick Mami. I feel in love with that chick the moment I saw her, not just because she was the first magical girl Sayaka and Madoka encounter, but she was just so awesome. :3

My second favorite is Homura, because Hommando is love, Hommando is life!

Third is Nagisa, because she is the most adorable thing I have ever seen. They should have gave her more screen time in Rebellion. >.<

Mami was pretty awesome but so was Homura. Mami took the time to teach the other girls the ropes but Homura's power was pretty amazeballs.

Madoka broke the universe though. That counts for something.

I also really like Kyubey and would side with him if he would just tell people the whole truth from the start. I know they don't usually react well but it's better than all the BS they went through not knowing. Even though it's not a magical girl Kyubey's probably my favorite character.

Either Mami or Homura (Pre-Rebellion. Not gonna go into it further in case some people haven't seen Rebellion but... Egh.)

Love Mami's design and personality, but Homura is by far the strongest character.

Also I love Kyubey. It's cute. :3

Homura, by light-years. She's tragic, has ambiguous intentions, is morally complex—and her story is so, so heartbreaking. She's the quintessence of a character who turned from an innocent, happy child to the broken person she is now. Change. Character development. Something Homura definitely has, and still needs more. She's not a kind soul like Madoka, and she's probably a horrible person, but that's what happens when you throw suffering at one meguca for almost two hours. And who says I have to like all the good guys? Homura is my favorite because her story draws me in and makes me wonder. Her character is just as mysterious as it was from the start, and that's beautiful, especially after an entire movie about her.

I could write paragraphs on her, but hey, they're all on my Tumblr already. :P

YesI've watched Rebellion, and yes, I still love her after it. Don't even use that card. It's my favorite movie.

Kyubey is best magical girl

I guess I'll pick Homura.

I love her overall character and design, and her special ability along with her weapons.

She just seems like a well developed character with a cool story.

Homura is the only correct answer.

A few reasons for that:

Firstly, I didn't become truly involved in the show until she took the spotlight. Episode 10 is one of the best episodes of anything I've ever seen, with Homu being given an unbelievable amount of growth in a mere 22 minute episode. I nearly wept.

Secondly, Rebellion, in which she went from being a great character to a fascinating one. If people go as far as to write analytical essays speculating on her thoughts and motivations, then the writers have likely done something right.

Thirdly, she's got a great design, and is fairly unique in that she uses conventional weapons instead of magical ones.

Fourthly, it was through my love of Homu that I met one of my best friends on here. Somewhat unrelated to her character but whatever.

This is the most brutal anime EVER

Mami was probably the only character I thought the artstyle really worked with. The way she was designed, her typical clothing, her weapons in battle...she was just a total badass and looked great to boot. I don't usually go for the pseudo-Victorian look but she made it work.

@,

Because I am an evil person and I like tricking people.

But seriously, do you think I would do that? Just go on MLP Forums and tell lies?

And I watched Evangelion once and I still think Madoka is more brutal on the feels.

They're all very inspiring characters, but for me I have to give Madoka a bit of an edge. Just sort of a natural gravitation towards her character, really. I can't say that she's the best designed character on the show especially with Rebellion giving us that ridiculous Homura psychodrama. Madoka just naturally appeals to me, I think because I tend to like characters with the whole 'trying to find who you are and what you stand for' schtick.

Kyoko gets best character design though. And by that I mean she's hot.

And I watched Evangelion once and I still think Madoka is more brutal on the feels.

The way I see it, Eva is something where the characters are all kind of hateful in a way. From the get go a lot of them were saddled with the worst traits of humanity like cowardice and arrogance, etc, and they displayed it easily. Madoka the girls are a bit more tender, their problems aren't the sort that would necessarily turn people against them but inspire pity.

That's one of the first things I loved about her when she appeared. I was like, "Who is that angel? xD", and when she transformed, I was like:  :o

Not to mention, she has this motherly attitude about her that I also love...she seems more mature and well grounded (when she isn't going cucoo about the facts of entropy, if you know what I mean *nudge episode 10 nudge*).

I adore the Victorian style of her magi outfit. :3

Her combat skills were absolutely gorgeous! TIRO FINALE!

@,

Yeah, I see what you mean. I mean, Evangelion also hit hard on the feels but Madoka

KILLED ALL OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS

and you could also sympathize with the characters a bit more.

Honestly, I've had trouble picking a favorite in the past. First time through, I was drawn to Homura's amazing willpower and willingness to push on even in the face of crushing despair. She's an awesome character, but my opinions changed a bit over the course of forcing all my friends, family and distant acquaintances to watch the show with me at gunpoint rewatching the show a few more times.

After watching it with my sister, I was drawn to Kyoko. She's got an incredibly gorgeous design, as a lot of people in here have pointed out, but that's only the tip of things. I really never thought I could be drawn to sympathize with such a violent, crazy person so quickly but that backstory :(. I also got really invested in watching her interactions with her waifu Sayaka restore her optimism and and slowly bring back her heart of gold.

And I've gone though periods of infatuation with the other characters too, but after another rewatch and seeing Rebellion, I settled on Sayaka. I can relate to that cycle of self-destructive behavior more than I'd like, and I just think there's something very human about her story. So many start off with good intentions and big ideals, and end up broken when things go wrong, until you don't even know why you were fighting so hard in the first place. I also like how Sayaka is constantly analyzing her own motivations, even if she beats herself up far too much.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAyacUBQAVw

The Wicked soundtrack is basically Sayaka's life as sung by Idina Menzel. And Kyoko is best Glinda.

And Rebellion is just the cherry on top. Seeing a new, strong Sayaka who's worked through her troubles and transitioned from a wicked witch to an adorable angel was a treat to see :).

My favorite would have to be Homura. I've always liked her character design the best, and finding out what she went through for Madoka made me appreciate her a whole lot more. Her character really did evolve from the original timeline, to the last one. She's actually been my favorite from the very beginning. I like how she uses makeshift explosions, and stolen guns. That, and her time powers makes her pretty powerful.

Some random comments I have about the others

  • Kyubey- I completely understand why he/she is doing what they're doing. What are a few human lives for the entire universe? Although, Madoka's world where no Magical Girls turn into witches is nice too since there is less suffering.
  • Mami- "Mommy!" Oh yeah, she has guns too. That's pretty cool.
  • Sayaka- Poor, angry Sayaka. In a way she got screwed over, but at the same time she didn't. It was very kind of her to use her wish to heal that boy. However, she shouldn't have expected anything in return.
  • Madoka- She's alright I guess. If I had to rank the magical girls from best to least, she'd be lower on the list.
  • Kyoko- "Want some?" Kyoko is pretty awesome. I can see why she is so popular.

I can't comment on the others since I still have to watch Rebellion. I'll probably do that tonight since I have nothing better to do.

I'm surprised there are a ton of fans of Kyoko though. It's weird how she's my least favorite.
