Occasional 504 Gateway Timeout

So this has been going on for a little while. Once in a while, there is a 504 gateway timeout on this site. Is something wrong with the server?

504 Gateway Timeout is the Server.  Seems connection was unable to reach its designated point.     However, I'm guessing there was maintenance.  

 

Any word from Lavo?

Took a look at the sites IP and i'm not getting a response.    BTW, 504 occurs when the requested info fails to reach physical server, for some one who asked me earlier. 

 

EDIT: As a result of 504, i accidentally made this second post.  Sorry bout that, :blush:

I've been having problems with this lately too, although it may just be my wifi (which has been awful lately). Anyone know what the cause of this is?

It's not your wi-fi. There are a few culprits it could be, not just a server side issue. All of the small issues like reputation, double posting, etc are likely related. There may be some small upgrades being done, but either way the 'engineers' that run this ship know their stuff. I'm sure it will be working smoothly in no time.

Good thing I looked this up before posting XD Anyways, same here. In fact, it has happened 5 times today (by 5 times I mean it happened 5 separate times, each time having the error pop up for a good handful of refreshes before letting me back on). Hopefully Lavo will respond, I could use some help too :(

 

*Edit* Ok, so, wanted to update this because it just tanked harder for me... I exited this forum thread, 504 connection error. Thought nothing of it, just kind of went "Argh, screw you" and tried to move past it. Went onto another thread, 504 connection error upon trying to load it up.This happened every single time on my way back to here, and I wouldn't be surprised if it does it again after I try and hit save changes on this edit

This can happen when there is server maintenance going on. Pretty sure that was what was going on when this topic was posted.

 

That being said, has anyone experienced this at all more recently?

Twice in the past few weeks. (Yesterday 11:35 am to 4:50 pm) However, i can tell you its the server itself and not the site. Cmd ping will identify it. Edited by Not Thunder-Wing

It'll be probably caused by the Server Migration,that Lavo has been doing over the course of the last weeks

~Chaotic Discord~ talked with Lavo to know the server's current state,and this is the current status:

8P Lavo has 398588374895848 other projects that do and don't have to do with Poniverse to deal with too though, plus a job in real life and other things going on. He cannot drop everything he's doing and jump on something whenever stuff breaks, especially when stuff breaking happens all the time and is rather expected. He's also our only tech outside Feld0 who's also always busy, because trying to find someone who's active, interested, skilled enough, fully trustworthy AND willing to work insane amounts of hours for free is like trying to find the perverbial needle in the perverbial country full of hay.

He's fully aware of the issue going on with the search function, and the related issue of people's content not showing up, and will jump on it when he can x) Here's what was said yesterday in le admin Olmypian Chat Thing.

Lavo: Not particularly, it's an "ASAP" thing but I'm extremely limited on my time atm. I'm late on starting on the PRP project and I wanted to start it this weekend, but the server took way too long to copy over files so that postponed the major server op for quite a while.


Apparently,Lavo is doing the server migration grafually,due for the lack of free time to work on the server,causing a slow transference,therefore making to appear sometimes 504 Errors.

Introduction


A server (not necessarily a Web server) is acting as a gateway or proxy to fulfil the request by the client (e.g. your Web browser or our CheckUpDown robot) to access the requested URL. This server did not receive a timely response from an upstream server it accessed to deal with your HTTP request.


This usually means that the upstream server is down (no response to the gateway/proxy), rather than that the upstream server and the gateway/proxy do not agree on the protocol for exchanging data.


Fixing 504 errors - general


This problem is entirely due to slow IP communication between back-end computers, possibly including the Web server. Only the people who set up the network at the site which hosts the Web server can fix this problem.


Fixing 504 errors - CheckUpDown


Use of proxies and caching is increasing on the Web. Our CheckUpDown robot will always try to 'drill through' to the real computer that actually hosts the Web site, but we do not have complete control over where our HTTP request actually ends up. If only one link in the chain of computers dealing with our HTTP request is broken, then an error such as 504 can easily occur.


Please contact us (email preferred) whenever you encounter 504 errors - there is nothing you can do to sort them out. We then have to liaise with your ISP and the vendor of the Web server software so that they can review the flow of IP data traffic between various computers under their control. However this is not an easy error to sort out, because the ebb and flow of Internet traffic makes this type of error very transient.
