The "male" fans of My Little Pony? The MALE FANS?????

They are going for the sensationalist 'journalism'. Girls and women liking My Little Pony? Nobobdy even cares slightly that is perfectly acceptable in society. But boys and men liking my little pony? OMG freaks and perverts and homosexuals!

This documentary is going to set the fandom back especially since it's out during the hiatus and there is very little for the fandom to focus on.

Also expect drama, a lot of drama. I'm fully expecting backlash from those who are part of the show when this gets pirated a lot just like the De lancie doc did.

The "male" fans of My Little Pony? The MALE FANS?????

What the frick Ashleigh? Are you serious right now? Are you seriously doing this to us???

Female and non-binary bronies get erased by every group out there, a fact that not only pains us but strongly supports the stereotype that male bronies (or just bronies, as they're called by people who erase us) are disgusting sexist pigs. To see such a blatantly false and detrimental statement made in such a huge way is nothing short of revolting, and if I sound angry, it's because I very much am. This fandom will continue to be despised until people get it through their thick skulls that Brony is a gender-neutral term, and a documentary contradicting that will make things so much worse.

Shame on Ashleigh, shame on the makers of this thing

And while I'm at it shame on the people here saying that this makes our fandom look "autistic" as if being autistic is a bad thing. Spoiler alert: it isn't.

/end rant

You have no idea how much I appreciated what you just said. If the point if this documentary is to once again play Pony Apologetics by putting a simplified face on a group of people, I will have much to say. Much.

Maybe I still a little annoyed by the fact that it was my two teenage daughters who succeeded in my investment in this show, which according to this documentary, means that the Brony population in my household is zero. I'm too old, and my kids are girls.

I'll withhold complete judgment until I see it, but it really needs to showcase a wider representation of this fandom.

And I agree that it's disheartening to see people upset that about the 'cast selection' and resorting to passive aggressive behavior here. Why do I get the feeling that people DO want a propaganda video to justify their enjoyment of MLP?

Well hopefully they kept a part of the movie to address that very concern as i do tire of the lack of focus that gets. I think we have to keep our emotions in check before we actually see what and how they cover it. They do seem to tap into sensationalism in an effort to get people into theaters to see it, which i think is part of why we are reacting this way.  Hopefully this will not be something to poke fun of us as it will deserve a good blast of negative feedback then.

But let's wait and see.

That's what 50 years of being represented like this gets you, I don't want that for this fandom.

I can agree with that. I am worried that this documentary is going to do very little to help and very much to enforce negative opinions. If a viewing confirms this then bronies in numbers need to go out and denounce the film and what it stands for. Totally reject it.

Or just let if fade away, the brony doc with John De Lancie certainly has become obscure, and this film doesn't appear to have any larger of a marketing budget so it's reach is almost entirely down to the fans who if history repeats itself will more likely pirate it or watch it in a stream then actually go to the cinema or pre-order a blu-ray.

Netflix doesn't release ratings details so you can't say that the JDL Brony doc is obscure. That thing was all over my recommended list before I became a fan of the show.

But I get your point nonetheless.

This documentary is nearly out when it is I'd like to discuss opinions on it here.

What do you think of the concept of this documentary. Are you going to see it?

I plan on reviewing it if I can find a version to watch of it online.

If you do find an online version, would so kind as to post a link here?

I would but it might be against the rules. Back when the Equestria Girls movie came out what we did was Personal Message each other with a link to the YouTube video or wherever it was streaming. I haven't looked for the film yet as I believe it doesn't even have a showing till tomorrow.

That goes for everyone here, it's probably against the rules to post a link in this thread but whoever finds it please PM me and anyone else who wants to see it with a link. I doubt I'll be the first to find it but time will tell.

I don't have netflix, but if it's like any other service the recommended feed will be based on past browsing history and therefore personalised to the user. I would be surprised if the film was advertised to everyone with netflix because they didn't have any real marketing budget JDL practically said they didn't.

Good points. I do tend to watch my share of documentaries on Netflix, so that would likely be why it was pushed to my recommended list.

Some of those guys look normal in the trailer.. I don't think it's going to be all bad.

I bet it's gonna end with Ashleigh saying that bronies are not simply perverts or something like that...

I pray my family does not see this and go, "Oh! So you're one of these guys?"

Guh...Stupid documentaries.

Since when did a documentary ever been completely accurate, anyways?

This is exactly what we should do, and to illustrate the point allow me to tell you a little story.

A while back, I happened across a documentary on netflix (the name of which I have no desire to give) that was meant to explore the world of bisexuality. This appealed to me, as I at the time was just beginning to truly accept myself as a bisexual. I started up the movie, and at first all seemed well, as it promised to take an honest look at us and implied that we'd be painted positively. It then proceeded to pander to every imaginable bisexual stereotype, painting us as a group of attention-desperate teens and 20-somethings who are whores and can never be trusted not to cheat on our partners, even going so far as to have footage of a woman who if memory serves was portrayed as an esteemed psychologist saying something to the affect of "To me this whole bisexuality thing kind of just seems like a fad."

I couldn't even finish it. I was disgusted, I was angry, I was hurt, I couldn't believe that people who claimed to be on my side would portray me like this. I'm sure anyone sensible would agree that this shouldn't have been made, and that the people responsible should never be allowed to so much as hold a camera ever again, nor should anyone who makes a film that encourages people to believe harmful stereotypes about an innocent group of people, be they bisexual or brony or anything else.

However, by talking about it, all I'm really doing is making people aware of it. Piquing their interest. If I gave the name, maybe one or two of you would go look it up. And that's precisely why I wouldn't make a big deal about that film, and why we shouldn't make a big deal of it if this film goes badly. Any publicity is good publicity.

So, if this is bad, let's all agree to simply sweep it under the rug and pretend it didn't happen. Don't talk about it, don't rant about it, don't do anything. If someone says "I saw this documentary about bronies and *insert insult here*", that would be the time to politely explain that the film is riddled with gross inaccuracies. If you'd like, you can even use my story to illustrate the point that documentaries can be horrifically false, free of charge. Other than that, let's all just let it fade into obscurity, shall we?

I haven't actually seen the trailer for it yet but I think I'll pass either way. :P The first one was good enough for getting people to see we're not what they think we are at first glance. I don't think this one is quite as focused on that if at all more so than it is the fandom itself but I'm still good with the one we have now. Perhaps I'll watch it eventually to see what they had to say but it's not a must see thing.

God I love that trailer. I had a smile on my face the entire time. This is the kinda recognition that we need. I will get this as soon as it comes out.

IGN's Review was glowing, and their review seemed to imply it was focused on the idea that Bronies are as diverse as other fandoms.

Not sure if it will have the same feeling as the editorial pitch that the JDL Doc did. It's starting to sound that way.

In all honesty, I don't care anymore. This whole fandom is being treated like a phenomenon, with all these documentaries and stuff. Why? Why do people care so much? 'cause I don't care. I'm sure there have to have been interesting things on the internet than adults and pastel horses.

The movie is officially out on Itunes for purchase. Did anyone get it yet and how was it?

Well, my misgivings aside, I am a documentary whore so I will likely pick it up tonight.
