Well, there has been no indication given whether in canon or official course material.

Though, if anything, it would have to deal with baking, pastries, or something like that.

You're making the assumption that Mrs. Cake was the one who changed her name. It's entirely possible Mr. Cake was the one who changed. It's not that rare anymore in RL, and we are dealing with a society that seems more matriarchal with the ponies.

In which case, I wouldn't be that surprised to find out that Mr. Cake's original family name was in fact Carrot, and that he's related to Carrot Top/Golden Harvest. Because they seem to put a lot of emphasis on having names that mean something, I can see him dropping whatever his 'given' name was, and taking Cake just to make the 'Carrot Cake' reference.

Again, it's rare, but not unheard of for people in RL to have no obvious given name. My own father has what appears to be three family names (Campbell Reid Kemp) and no given name, as apparently that used to happen occasionally in Scotland.

One thing to consider is that it is possible that Mr. Cake took his wife's last name instead of the other way around. There are some married couples who do take the last name of the wife; so it is possible.

I don't think pony names work like ours do, so this question is potentially irrelevant.

But we don't know much about how it works, so in the event that they do, then personally I don't think it'd be set in stone for either partner to take the others name, since I believe Equestria is egalitarian. Whether or not a name change occurs would be on the whims of the couple, rather than some ridiculous societal expectation that probably wouldn't even exist in the first place.

Of course, even in a egalitarian society, some of the more traditionalist people, or ponies in this case, could still stick to old naming methods, so there's nothing to say that the idea couldn't persist in some form or another in such conditions.

Or perhaps, they might be cousins. In many parts of the world, it is common for cousins to marry, and in Equestrian society the same probably happens. Their cousinhood explains why they are in the same industry, have the same last name, and also why their kids are Pegasus and Unicorn (recessive genes). Many recessive traits (such as a lot of genetic disorders) show up after cousin marriage, since they are more likely to share the same recessive allele.

Her first name is Danger. Danger Cake

Mrs. Cake keeps that name as "Need to know". She's a retired agent who used to head the Equestria Secret Service. She's the pony that first brought Twilight Sparkle to Princess Celestia's attention. Mr. Cake is a former enemy agent who defected after he fell in love with his chief adversary.

(I may have just fired up my headcanon!)

Ponies may not change names. Shining and Cadance didn't change names. Rarity's parents don't have a common name (Hondo Flanks and Cookie Crumble). I think they probably don't change names at all.

My guess is that they were in the same industry, met, fell in love, and got married.

@ Lunadash3 Cup Cake is just her full name. Her Husband's full name is Carrot Cake. and their kids' full names are Pound Cake and Pumpkin Cake.

Actually, her name is Cup Cake; it was mentioned in the beginning of the Baby Cakes episode when Twilight states: "Cup Cake and Carrot Cake must be so proud!" So, yeah, Mrs. Cake is Cup Cake and Mr. Cake is Carrot Cake.

As for her maiden name; I don't think there's any proof of what that was, and we don't know how maiden names work in Equestria as I don't remember any married ponies that were referred to by their full names.

Well, for all we know; Cadance could actually be Cadance Armor, as they haven't referred to her by her full name anytime after her wedding (Unless her real name really is Mi Amore Cadenza, which seems a little odd for a name).

You also have the case that Pinkie didn't have parents with matching names. There seems to be a lot more evidence that they keep their name than changing it. The cakes seem to be the only example.

Maybe last names don't exist, as most ponies are referred to with both their names and some only have one name, so their so-called "first and last names" are just one whole name, and some families just choose to use that second name throughout the family such as in the Pie family as there is Maud Pie and Grammy Pie, but in Applejack's family; there's Braeburn, Apple Bloom, Big McIntosh, and of course: Applejack.

Cup Cake and Carrot Cake's case was probably just a coincidence.

I think you are spot on there. It's like 2 completely unrelated people named Smith fell in love. Common name. Cake can't be that rare.
