So I had a six-hour drive on my way back from vacation, and while I was driving I came up with the lyrics to a song. Lemme know what y'all thinks of it! Hard to explain exactly the tune of it, but I think it's got a slightly country feel to it, if that helps at all.

 

 

She’d never been in love before, and she didn’t know what to feel

He swore that he would make her happy; she knew it must be real

He promised her he’d give her all she needed and much more

But after twenty years, he left her all alone and walked out the door

She’d given all she had to him, had nothing left to give

She realized that while he’d been her life, she’d never truly lived, but

 

Life is a journey

One big adventure

And the path you take is yours alone to choose

Nobody knows where you’ll end up

Your destination is a mystery

But how you get there is always up to you

 

He’d spent most of his early years with just one certainty

He would marry young and strike it rich as a big shot on TV

But he’s forty-five and all alone, and the bills a piling up

He works two jobs just to make it by, but it’s never quite enough

Those years that he’d spent planning, well they had been in vain

Life just kept throwing curveballs, and it never went his way, but

 

Life is a journey

And the path you take is yours alone to choose

Nobody knows where you’ll end up

Your destination is a mystery

But how you get there is always up to you

 

He’s ninety-three, laying in his bed with a photo of his late wife

He takes some time to think back on the best years of his life

They’d never had it easy, all their plans had fallen through

But they rolled with all the punches, and they always made it through

His daughter held his and asked if he’d lived his childhood dreams

No, he said, but that’s just life, and I wouldn’t change a thing, ‘cause

I like it. It's message is simultaneously sad and optimistic, and kind of represents my own view on life; bad stuff happens, but we have to surmount it and keep going because that's life, and with enough determination we can overcome the obstacles in our path and find happiness, even if it isn't the type of happiness we planned on achieving.
