Hello one and all, and welcome to the Expanded Universe fan club.
In this thread, Star Wars fans can celebrate what once was, and what has now been lost forever, because of Disney's god-awful business decisions.
You can post and discuss pretty much whatever you want in here as long as it has SOMETHING to do with the expanded universe of Star Wars.

That means any sort of material that was not featured in the core six films: comics, video games, novels, short stories, roleplaying material, ANYTHING is good here.

Which one of the Expanded Universe eras is your personal favorite?

I'm afraid that I do not know a whole lot about the EU, mostly because I don't read much, so forgive me if I end up sounding like an idiot. But I am very mad that Disney would just throw it all away and acknowledge it as no more than fan-fiction, when there is so much they could do with it. When I first heard about the new Star Wars episode coming out, I really thought for a little while that they could make it based off of the Old Republic. Mara Jade is no longer canon, so what now? Will Luke meet someone else? Will he marry at all?

I don't see how ditching the Expanded Universe was a bad business move.  Sure, I know a lot of Star Wars fans like some of it, but most people don't know a thing about the EU anyways.  Besides, the Expanded Universe was never considered canon official Star Wars canon, Disney just confirmed what most fans already knew.  It would have been awful for the vast majority of people watching Episode VII if the EU was considered canon.  Disney made the right move by echoing Lucas's statements of the Expanded Universe is not canon.  And from the the looks of things, they will be keeping a tighter grip on future Star Wars books, shows, and games by making sure they don't contradict any existing official Star Wars canon.

 

I think Disney is doing a great job with Star Wars so far, and I was one of those fans who were disappointed that they cancelled Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

This is a common misconception amongst the more ignorant Star Wars fans.

EU was in fact canon, it's just that it was part of the lower-tier, continuity canon, which means that it could be overridden by movie and television material at any given time. The keeper of the holocron, Leland Chee, has confirmed this many, MANY times over the years.

 

 

Zayne Carrick duels his former Master, Lucien Draay, amongst the ruin and rubble of what was once the Draay Estate on Coruscant.

Ah, my mistake then.  I just know Lucas never considered the Expanded Universe as canon (or anything he did after Return of the Jedi up to The Phantom Menace).  Even then, I don't see how it was a bad decision my Disney to scrap the EU.  At least now nothing will be over-written and we will have better continuity between all of Star Wars, not just the films and shows.

I loved the New Jedi Order and Legacy of the Force storylines, but, I'm not gonna lie, sometimes the utter and unrelenting grimdark was just way too off-putting.

With Chewie, Anakin, and Ganner Rhysode dying in the Yuuzhan Vong War, and Jaina slaughtering Darth Caedus, it was just too much for me to take at times.

I loved the New Jedi Order and Legacy of the Force storylines, but, I'm not gonna lie, sometimes the utter and unrelenting grimdark was just way too off-putting.

I hear you. I had the same reactions ... and I started to feel that the EU Universe was so large it started to collapse on itself. Though it was nice to see Daala get a larger role again later on. Mara Jade ... that was when I was like ... 'I give ... you guys ... please stop!.'

I remember when Zahn wrote Heir to the Empire it was the biggest deal to me, and reading it for the first time ranks as one of my favorite reading experiences to date. From there I was hooked on the EU. 

 

I was born in 1994, so, obviously, my Star Wars experience has been very different from yours.

My first exposure to the universe was in 1997, when my mom bought the Special Edition VHS boxset for my dad for his 33rd birthday.

I watched the films in chronological order, and it was the most mindblowing experience I'd ever had.

Not that I have too many memories from that time, as I was, in fact, only three years old, but I do remember watching episodes IV, V, and VI in one sitting. Very vividly, in fact.

 

I was hooked from the start, and I actually started following the Expanded Universe almost straight away.

My first EU experience was the Dark Empire comic series, followed by the Tales of the Jedi comics, and then the Thrawn trilogy.

I feel absurdly lucky to have been born in the mid-90's, though. I was able to experience ALL of the wonderfully diverse and compelling EU material as it came out during the late 90's and early 2000's.

 

My personal favorite era is the Old Republic era, especially the time period that ranges from the early Mandalorian Neo-Crusades to the final duel between the Jedi Exile, and Darth Traya on Malachor V.

There's something about the ancient history of the Star Wars universe that is just endlessly fascinating to me, especially the history of Jedi, Sith, and the Old Republic as a democratic body.

In the end, I haven't explored much of the EU. I'm in the middle of the second book of the Thrawn trilogy, and I've loved every bit of what I read thus far. Same goes from some of the games.

 

I LOVE Thrawn as a character; he is essentially my favorite villain out of every form of media out there.

 

That said, I can understand why Disney did what it did. The movies will always trump the EU; period. I hate it in a way, but the EU will still be there for anyone who wants to delve into it.

Star Wars is still my favorite science fiction/fantasy universe and I've read some of the EU novels and comics (also played KOTOR and The old Republic).

It was intended as "semi-canon" how you stated, but later it evolved into equal canon to the movies, though information from the films and TV series overwrite those from the Expanded Universe in case of contradiction.

And of course there is the Knights of the Old Republic games and comics which introduced another one of my favorite sith as well as jedi Revan. I would like to see more of what things were like before the republic was even formed like back during the time of the Rakatan Infinite Empire or the Force Wars which happened just shortly after the force itself was first discovered.

Great comic series by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema about the early centuries of the Jedi Order, (known in those days as the Je'daii Order) featuring the Rakata, and the Force Wars on Tython.
