Do some bronies offend the show by not abiding by show aesthetic?

I am often troubled by fans of Friendship is Magic and the mindset in the way they approach the show. What troubles me most is that they don't seem to be able to grasp the aesthetic of the show. Not those that create pony parodies in different genres but those that draw inspiration from the show...it turns out distorted and false looking. The idea of OC's are not bad. They are good, however many people (and some seem to live in nations where MLP is not popular) do not seem to understand what show they are making a character for. If a person designs a character and wants it to fit in to an established fictional universe then why create one that couldn't possibly do so? If people abide by aesthetic then most OC's would have to be gotten rid of. The OC's and various fan fictions violate what the show stands for and collides with the aesthetic in such things as being violent, unfriendly and the over consumption of power. It is as if the people that design these characters don't know what the show is and many are old enough to know better. You don't design a character like Twilight Sparkle to put in a fan fiction of The Walking Dead. You don't put a character that belongs in a violent Japanese Anime in MLP. You just don't. By not avoiding or trying to correct them, are we giving into aesthetic corroding elements in the fandom? Am I wrong? Should the aesthetic remain supreme in the thoughts of all fan works save for parody? What of OC alicorns? What of those that don't seem to "get" the show? Those people that give an OC a dozen cutie marks, those that write Equestria as violent and evil, those that have friends turn on each other for no reason that would make sense in show context. And why are they so defensive when they are called out? Would they be more comfortable creating something based on another show more fitting for their aesthetic interests?

By responding, limit yourself to talk on Friendship is Magic as aesthetic may have been different in the past and may change in the future.

Aside from the fact that there are evils and violence in the actual show, fan works are fan works.  They are how the individual sees or wants to see the show.  The writers have their take on it, and everyone else has theirs.  How boring to have to conform to a set of rules made by the original inspiration's creators, when you're just partaking in a place that comes from imagination.

I feel as long as no attempt is made to alter the source material, then creative licence is perfectly okay. Fans are there to take inspiration from the show, not copy it wholesale. As long as its well done, I don't see any issue with it.

*shrug* what can a TV show do to me?

The only people, at this point who would be offended would be some of the Bronies within the fandom. As one of the many fan-artists here, I do what I do for fun and only for fun. Why then should it matter?

MLP is not a god who would display his wrath to those who deviate their works from the show. And so, in all honesty, I am not worried if my creations deviate from the show in aesthetic, design, writing style, or musical choice.

This is mainly the way I see it anyways.

People make their OC's strong, powerful, violent, etc because that will never be shown in the show (till Twilight battled Tirek anyway lol). Its not like they are asking their OC's to be come canon. :)

Yes, that's what I think too.

I don't understand your point @Silver Letter. Do you mean the fans should create OCs that must fit with the show? Why would they do that?

I think it isn't just conforming 100% to the show but creating something so far removed from the show that it doesn't belong with it. Is it a bad thing? Is it even offensive?

No. It provides paths for MLP to branch off into different things. Some might be good, some might be bad. EqG exists because Hasbro saw the fandom make the ponies human lol

I completely agree with a lot that has been said here. As a fellow artist, i have fun with making OC's and such. I just wanted to add, that with any (i mean ANY) other show, cartoon, anime, TV show, book, or movie there are always Fandoms created off of them. Not only fanfictions and character plot twists, but they make their own OC's and add other characters from other shows as well. along with muisc and anything else i may have missed. MLP isn't the only one that has this "issue". i'm good with it but that's from me an artist who has fun with art. :)

It would make sense to have OC's that makes sense in the general universe. Why have them be all powerful gods or something? It makes little sense.

I think it's just a matter of people exercising creative freedoms to make something that works for them. You can take a look over in the RP section and you'll find tons of different RP universes (show-centric or WW2 or anything you can think of) and I think that's pretty great. It's always interesting to see what kind of new art, be it drawings, RP characters and lore, music etc. come out.

That being said, not all "fan work" is good. Some of it is, well... of questionable taste, to put it lightly, and honestly I feel damage the fandom in general, but you find that in pretty much anything that has a fan following, not just MLP.

Because as humans (as far as I know) we are not Gods and dont have wings or horns to give us powers or make us fly. mlp gives the imagination that ability and lets us create creatures and OC's that can do what we can't. I mean that may not be the only reason they create powerful flying ponies but that be main reason. Also what Lunatic Envy said as well.

I don't see how it could be offensive.  The show is not alive, it can't get offended.

It's not like they're actually putting their OCs into the show.  It's in their own imagination, their own world.  Why should they have to limit it to not be how they want?

Do you limit your own daydreams to only what could happen in the actual place you're dreaming of?  I know I tweak mine to make it the most enjoyable place to be as an escape to the limiting real world.

It may just be me. I truly love MLP:FIM, but it's only a cartoon. I don't understand how people are claiming to see the secrets of the universe in it. Frankly, I get more than a little uncomfortable when people start claiming it somehow changed everything and made life worth living for them.

As for fanfics and the like, ALL shows have fanfics, even ADULT fanfics. Before the internet even existed, people were writing love stories between Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. I fail to see how that can insult a television program.

In some cases, the fanworks bring in new people because it bridges the gap between them and a show they may have never paid attention to in the past.

You are taking this a bit too seriously, I can understand certain fanworks not being to your personal taste but you have to keep in mind that these fanworks do not effect the show in any way. The great thing about fanfics and fanart is that they can be used as opportunity to do certain things that you wouldn't normally be able to do in the show, it is like having several sub cannons separate from the show cannon.

I understand that this topic requires much thought. I tend to get irritated by the uninspired among us and even wish to say that they're wrong but I can also grasp where the counter argument comes from. As much as I sometimes want to say, "No, your OC is not more powerful than Celestia. No, he's not a "Bat Pony", No, he isn't 100,000 years old.." and so on, I do see that people want to make the aesthetic of the show their own.

I can agree with you somewhat on the ridiculous OCs (Mary Sue/Alicorn/OP/etc.), mostly because they just come across as silly, but in regards to fan works, you can't dictate what people should and should not create.

Honestly, if every fanfic, for example, tried to adhere as faithfully as possible to the "atmosphere" of the show, things would get really boring. As long as the canon characters themselves are portrayed faithfully (in works that involve the canon characters), then by all means please, put them in a grimdark war fic if you want. It's not hurting the show itself or impacting the fandom negatively, so why take issue with it?
