gaming Good non steam games.

I want to play a few non steam free games on my laptop, and I'd like some suggestions. I like the following style of games.

FPS(i.e. Call of Duty, Battlefield)

RPG(i.e. Skyrim, Zelda)

Horror(no jump scares, just trying this genre.)

Any suggestions?

For FPS, no clue. Almost every FPS on the computer is on Steam at this point.

For RPG, probably an MMO like Wizard 101 or something, but there are not that many and they all aren't as good as console RPGs.

For Horror, try Amnesia. I know it's not free, but it's a perfect starter for Horror gamers. There are very few jumpscares leading up to almost none, and it's still terrifying without the jumpscares.

If you don't mind some older games, try GoG.com. They have tons of non-steam games.

Edit: Realized you said "free" games. Um...yeah, not much there. If it's good, it's on Steam. If it's not on Steam it's probably not good :\

Any particular reason you're trying to stay away from Steam?

Free game wise, there are very few good ones, and generally those are on steam.

I'd also like to know why you are staying away from Steam.

well, I use steam, thing is that it annoys me with super long updates and download time, plus I'm broke, mainly because I'm in high school and don't yet have a job.

Well the download time for big games is going to take the same amount of time whether you use steam or not. If you are having issues with the speed, it's most likely your internet itself or you didn't configure Steam correctly when you installed it.

As for the price, well...if it's a free Steam game, it's a free Steam game. No money involved. Like I said before, if you're looking for good non-flash free games, Steam has the cream-of-the-crop.

I know, but the moment I go to play, they update and it takes hours. however I don't have the fastest laptop, and my dad set up the wifi in the basement when I'm often in my room on the second floor.

If your looking for a non subscription MMORPG then I suggest you try looking at Guild wars 2. I've only played a couple of weeks or so on it but the game is absolutely fantastic and by far the best fantasy MMORPG i've ever played, give it a shot ;)

Eh, them's the breaks then I guess. Not using Steam isn't going to make games download any faster. I'd recommend Kongregate; it's all free flash-games, but they'll be relatively less resource-intensive and there are actually quite a few really good ones that I could be fooled into believing were full-priced indie games if I wasn't told otherwise.

Also, you know you can turn automatic updates off on Steam, right?

Well, this is just going to be based on your internet speed mostlikely, and maybe the speed of your laptop very slightly, but when it comes to downloads online, your internet speed is typically the main factor.

Your speed for downloads is only really based on your computer if your downloading from a disk. Otherwise I don't think it has much effect.

But yeah, I don't have any real good suggestions off the top of my head of free non steam games that are good. I mean there are non steam games that are good(For instance, Mass effect 2 and 3, even if they were on steam until they were taken down.) but they are kinda harder to find.

Origins has this thing where they can have free games sometimes, for instance I got plants vs zombies for free of there, but I don't like the program as much as steam, and really only have it for a select few games not available on steam that I want.

The library is pretty limited, they have next to no free games all the time, but they did have a free game thing going which stays the same for like a month or several.

Otherwise you'll have to do searching, or shell out some cash.

Steam is just a really good game store for PC stuff. Because of all the amazing sales, and they have quite a few free, and non free games. So you aren't really going to get much better when it comes to getting games for PC.

What? :o  STEAM, Y U NO TELL ME THIS! How though?

I believe you have to do it per-game, you go to the "properties" page of the game and it's one of the option in one of the tabs. I'm sure you'll figure it out  ;)

Also, even if you don't disable automatic updates you can simply "pause" any updates that are happening by going to the "Library" tab and clicking "Downloads" from the dropdown menu.

Also also, Steam is supposed to pause all downloads when you start playing games on it, so honestly I'm not sure what problem you were having to begin with   (unless your problem is that the Steam client ITSELF is what's taking hours to download, in which case how do you download games in the first place!? That would be a ridiculously slow connection since those files aren't larger than 10mb)

Take some time to click around Steam and learn all the options, it's a fairly versatile program when it wants to be.

There are certainly a lot of good FPS, RPGs and I presume horror (I don't play those so I can only guess) out their, although most of the new ones are on Steam.  There are plenty of really good old games out their, probably most of which are on GOG.  My suggestions:

FPS:   Duke Nukem 3D

           Half-Life

Deus Ex  - My personal vote for best FPS ever made

RPG:  Baldur's Gate 1 & 2

Ultima 3 through 7 part 2.  Ultimate 5 even got a remake in the form of a mod for dungeon siege.  My personal vote for best RPG series ever made.

           Planescape Torment

Final Fantasy 6 (I am sure you can emulate this)

           Final Fantasy 7

Deus Ex - it counts as both :)

oh, speaking of GOG and free games as well, try Tyrian 2000. One of my favorites growing up, it's essentially customizable R-Type, and it's so damn good. Also free.

Those are in steam too.

I can suggest some underrated non-steam games

(RPG)The Elder Scrolls 1-3, (Obivion and Skyrim are in steam)

(RPG)The old Harry Potter games I think

(FPS)Far Cry 1 and 2

Enjoy :P

As far as free games go, you're mainly going to find games with tons of in game purchasables that ruin the entire game by overpowering people willing to drop $200 in weapon upgrades.  Plus because they're free you end up with lots of games like Combat Arms that are filled with hackers which further ruin the game...

You're much better off finding cheap older games... instead of Skyrim, grab Fallout 3.  Instead of COD: Ghosts, grab World at War.  You're probably also more likely to find non-steam games if you look at older titles so that's a plus as well.

Sorry if that's not a ton of help, but games are expensive to produce so anything free is going to have a catch, whether that's in game purchases that'll end up costing you more than a new game, or something more shady like adware.

I think the point is that they can be acquired without steam, which they can.  OP is trying to get around problems with the steam client.

Almost all, but all popular steam games can be acquired by torrent. :P. If that is case
