 I know Sunset Shimmer would really like being an Alicorn but,

 

if I could pick the type of pony I wanted to be I would want to be a normal Unicorn because,

 

 I'd still want the ability to use magic without having to fly like the Alicorns do.

A lot of people would love to see Sunset become an alicorn since she has gone above and beyond in not only redeeming herself, but also dealing with threats that almost destroyed the world she now calls home. Sunset may not think she's ready to ascend but she's not giving herself enough credit.

Daydream Shimmer showed us what Sunset could be like as an alicorn so perhaps it's a sign of things to come, though she didn't have any wings during Legend of Everfree.

really don't like the idea of alicorn SunShimmy. she's awesome as she is. Hasbro doesn't need any more alicorns in this generation. On top of that, the only time we saw her with wings and a horn was when she was able to power up through her friends' magic. On top of that, they were energy, not physical like SciTwi's horns and wings were. 

Op top of THAT, we still need unicorn SunShimmy Funko products before they alicorn her (like how we only got Alicorn Twi Funko)

I've always subscribed to the popular idea that Sunset took a bag of bits with her through the portal and was able to use them to finance a budget apartment, food and other such necessities. I've also never liked the idea of Sunset becoming an alicorn, even if she has technically earned it by now. Her desires to become and alicorn led to downfall, so the idea might not sit well with her now.

I've always believed that Sunset lives in the library of Canterlot High as a tribute of sorts to Princess Twilight who stayed there when she came to the human world to get her crown back.

That actually makes a lot of sense & I could totally see Sunset Shimmer living in the library & reading a lot.

 

Not only because she was Princess Celestia's student but,

 

also because she needed something to do when she wasn't in class at nighttime or on the weekends.

 

which, would also explain why Sunset is the smartest student at Canterlot High.

I just found a screenshot that I think is from that comic where Sunset Shimmer is

 

sitting on a "book bed" similar to Twilight Sparkle's so, your theory is canon.

 

I'm putting it in spoilers just in case for people who haven't read the comic.

Yep, that's one of the conversations where she is in the library and has her own 'book bed'. It may not be all that much but it's better than not having an answer at all. You'd think Sunset's place of residence would have been brought up in the movies by now since we're up to four now with three specials this year.

I think the book bed was just meant to be an easter egg (or whoever is in charge of the library was too lazy to put the books back). '-'

I personally believe that Sunset stayed at the school at first (hidden), then at Principal Celestia's place until she found a job and now she lives in a small and cheap apartment.

Sunset is known to have her own car though this was only revealed in the chapter books as opposed to the movies, so your theory does hold value though a van might be too awkward for her.
