Got a new PC for Christmas, one that I can actually play games on. I've downloaded Half-Life Complete, Counter-Strike complete, the Left 4 Dead Pack, and Garry's Mod.

Ooh, nice, mind sharing the specs?

Intel Core i7-4510U processor, 16 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 840 M GPU. It's a laptop, but a pretty good laptop for gaming. Trying to remember if there are other specs to share.

Why 16GB RAM when you have an i7-4510U and a GT 840M? 8GB would work well with that configuration.

Oh well. Use the extra RAM wisely!

It's justified if he leaves many Google Chrome tabs open; that's the biggest reason why I need additional 8GB of RAM since half of my total RAM is already used up by it.

So I do have a game that supports Dynamic Super Resolution, Skyrim. Only thing is with the ENB I have installed (RealVision Performance), my frame rate gets a bit... cinematic. I'll see if removing it improves my frame rate.

yup, back up to 60. (warning, 2715x1527 image)

This is actually incredibly cool. He manages to make a low-powered 9 year old laptop run Skyrim fluently by hooking up an external desktop GPU. I may just have to do this instead of building or buying a desktop/laptop....

Having a cable run from underneath the laptop might get annoying, though.

Not that it isn't a cool idea or anything. I'm actually kinda curious why it connects via hdmi. That seems a little weird, and I wonder if there is any bottleneck there, or how much of one.

Looks like it connects via the Mini PCI-E or ExpressCard slot. I was about to say, how the heck did they pull it off over HDMI only...

Yeah, but the other end is hdmi. I assume it's just to transfer raw non-video data, but hdmi strikes me as being a weird choice. I would expect a x1 to x16 adapter, or a proprietary connection on the other end.

wouldnt the static from outside fry the gpu?

Possibly. But I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to rig up an enclosure. Edited by Regulus

Isn't there this one Thunderbolt-based enclosure that allows for eGPU setups? Although that'd only be useful on Apple and Asus laptops since I don't know of any other laptop manufacturers that use Thunderbolt.

Weird. At least the connector is. Probably isn't transferring any sort of HDMI signal though.

It's not going to be for gaming, it's going to be for making drawings and stuff on it.
