Cliffhangers, good or bad?

For an example of something that ended in a Cliffhanger, lets take... Twilight's Kingdom part 2. Although this only applies when your watching it on cable, but there is a part where Twilight has to make a decision to give her magic to Tirek, after which it goes to a commercial. This is a cliffhanger, because it leaves the audience in suspense as to what is going to happen next, but the commercial is in the way of that. Either way, are Cliffhangers a good thing to have, or are they a bad thing to have?

I don't think they're good or bad, just kind of annoying to deal with.

However it becomes extremely annoying when the cliffhanger is a dramatic moment and the commercial after it is like "WOW CHECK OUT THIS AWESOME TOY, OMG", kind of really ruins the moment if you can't fast-forward it.

They are not bad in general though there are instances that it's done really really horribly, like if the pause just kills the excitement and the build up loses it's potential to be really good.

I think the point of having a (well placed) cliffhanger is both to amplify importance of the situation, which give you a demand to find out what's happen next.

But also to give the audience a momment to breath. Sometimes it's hard to take in every thing at once.

Sadly a (badly placed) cliffhanger, which is more common on tv, is just there to make you keep whatching after the commercial.

I don't know about mlp when it comes to tv but on the streams I think they are preatty good on placing cliffhangers (between the episodes)

Cliffhangers are good if they are at the end of the episode (not before commercials).

By that I mean good to have a feeling of expectation.

Commercial wise........................... no opinion

I think that the pacing would feel long winded without them.

Imagine that the characters are doing exposition then commercial break and return to exposition.  It would feel like the exposition lasted forever.

So, if you have to have commercials.  I'd rather something that felt like the pacing kept up rather than dragged on.

Good or bad, they are there for money.  If Hasbro wasn't bringing in commercials for cash, then MLP would only be available on pay channels & not for free.  Oh wait, it is already only available on cable, which you pay for.

If I wasn't already recording it so I could fast forward past the opening, I would be seriously annoyed.  As it is, I don't like it but I can live with it (I feel the same way about my glasses)

Cliff hangers can at times add

into the story and the wanting

to know more from a show

to a book and manga and comic

and adds some spice to the

watching the wanting!

Ugh, I hate those! But at the same time love them! When done well they get me so hyped for what comes next and it's always awesome.

Cliffhangers.

These are the little things that make us ache for more.

Without them, we probably wouldn't be hankering for the next episode!

Of course, it's simple. As a consumer we're supposed to want to see what happens next. It's a good way to attract the most customers too. Most shows with continuity and sequential story arcs use this a lot. I know in MLP it isn't used very often except for a couple of two parters.

Think of most whatever show/movie/book/game it is that you like. The cliffhanger ending often makes it a much more interesting story, because we want to know what happens next. A great tool for getting into shows for the first time in particular.

Of course a definitive conclusion is nice in most cases. Though I must admit, ending on a cliff hanger constantly can get annoying at times.

However, commercial television networks decide to put in their advertisements when the show hits a tense moment, forcing us to watch the products. This however greatly annoys me which is why I prefer to watch shows either recorded or by DVD.

Oh I do enjoy cliffhangers.

(Example:) -- 'Warning: Trek spoiler alert!'

I do believe they add value and increase popularity if done right. Not all are enjoyable however. Yes I do think they're [for the most part] a good thing to have. :D

cliffhangers in a show are deliberately put there to make you sit through the commercials because they want someone to buy their products, although I doubt any brony wants to buy furreal friend toys, it still holds true to any other show.

Ambiguous.  It depends where you use them, how often, and the overall importance of events.

For example, it would be ineffective to break for a commercial during a minor decision such as what to wear to school (unless that is somehow a major point in the story).  Cliffhangers can also be devalued like in American Idol results shows, when pretty much every commercial break happens right before announcing whether someone is on or off.

But, if used very infrequently and at crucial moments, cliffhangers can increase tension in a good way and give the audience a little time to imagine the outcome of an important event so that the actual reveal has more of an effect.

Here in Malaysia, We get one episode a week :c. Damn i miss the UK.  I think they are good for the Makers of the show, and a annoyance for the Viewer.

The makers rely on Ratings to see if their show (MLP) stays on the air, So When a clifhanger occurs, It does 2 things, The first Creating hype for the next episode and secondly for securing viewers that will come back,

AND THEY ANNOY ME!

Well thats it Bai

I actually like cliffhangers. They make me hyped for the continuation. Although, whenever I see one, I say 'dammit' in a slightly annoyed but excited way.

Edit:

Also to note, I don't watch anything on cable. I watch everything online, on Netflix, or on dvd/blu-ray, so I don't have to deal with commercials.

I love them when done sparingly. Don't put a cliffhanger in every single episode, or I will get annoyed and give up on the show. However, I am very curious, so if you want me to get into something, add some cliffhangers. (Also, don't make it one of those things where it gets better near the end, and I have to sit through the beginning to know what is going on in the end. If it doesn't interest me early on, I won't watch it.)

Cliffhangers make you think for yourself, and let's you use your imagination. I watch the Walking Dead, so I've got to put up with a LOT of cliffhangers. I like them, though, so it's alright.

Hm,

Cliffhangers for movies is just terrible.

For me, I'll forget about the movie after a year or so, plus, the sequel to it probably takes 2-3 years after the first one, and that's pretty irritating too.. And when you're going to watch the sequel, I'm like ''Wait.. Where did the first movie end again..'' And all that shizzle.. It's really annoying.

SO MOVIES IS A NO-NO.

Tv series are not that bad, you only have to wait a day/week or so, but cliffhangers in tv gets me rather really excited and jumping everywhere, or getting mad because I want to see it now. But it also depends on how the cliffhanger is. If it's terrible, I don't give a horse.

So, yeah.. Tv serie cliffhangers can be good..
