To begin, I will inform you what a GMO is.

A GMO is anything living, that has had its genes spliced with that of a normally incompatable species.

Examples of this are Soy beans, that have been given a gene from a bacterium that allows them to create its own pesticide.

Note: this is not a debate subject, please be respectful to everyone who posts here.

I intend for this thread to be lite discussion on the topic of GMOs, and to hopefully collect clean data on just how many people would like to see GMO foods labeled.

I absolutely would. It should be against the law to conceal that information for any reason. It would be even better to ban it in the United States like some other nations do.

Honestly I could care less. If a food is good, I'll still eat it regardless of what's in it.

Except that if it's GMO then it's not really food. It's more like poison.

Why don't people care what thay put in their bodys?  It effects everything from how long you're life span is how, healthy you are, and how your health will deteriorate over time, to how well you poop and not poop your self and how healthy your offspring can be.

In the UK it's the law to state if a food product has been Genetically Modified.

Personally I don't care if it has been modified, as long as it's food.

Russia also signed a similar law into action very recently.... In fact o think only USA and Canada are the only developed countries that don't require labeling.

I don't think GMO's are as scary as people make them out to be when used right, but I do think that they should be labeled. People have a right to know what they're putting in their body.

How are GMO's bad per say? I don't wish to spark a debate but I would like to learn more about this GMO.

If you wish, I do have a debate topic in the debates forum, that we can discuss that in.

I actually did a project on this about two years ago. California was looking to pass a law requiring everything with GMOs to be labeled, however it didn't pass because all of the other garbage that was tacked onto the bill. I would have been happy to vote yes if it hadn't been such a trap of politics snowballing behind the damned thing.

Honestly, I don't care if my food has GMOs, because I have way more health issues to worry about than what might be genetically modified in my food.

Heck yes. We need to know what's in our food. Hiding it will only make me suspicious that the food industry knows something that we don't.

All my life needed was a sense of someplace to go. I don't believe that one should devote his life to morbid self-attention. I believe that someone should become a person like other people.

I don't see any reasonable issue with GMO's and most of the scientific evidence I'm coming across point to it being safe. I don't care or see why anyone should care and thus, I vote no.

This is my rationality... Genetically modified crops can have more benefits than their regular counterparts, it's essentially evolution by artificial selection and similar in goals to selective breeding. A grain of genetically modified wheat is no different than a random grain of wheat you may stumble across in a farmer's field.

You really don't think we have the right to know what we're eating? It's not that different from knowing what the ingredients are. We really should know.

It doesnt really matter to me,as I'm quite neutral on GMO's and have nothing against eating them, but I guess that they should be labelled by principle for people to have the freedom to choose and know what they are eating.

Yeah, I don't like eating just whatever.

It's kind of scary that Americans are so laid back eating anything with a nice package, considering that some of our daily foods are banned in other countries.

After I start making money, I was planning on eating less meat and more organic, but the prices are a little disheartening.

I can see why people would want to know that, though it doesn't matter to me. Sometimes extra knowledge isn't exactly necessary - you don't need to know what happens to every little internal component in a car when you press it's gas pedal (unless that's your job).

Yes, yes, yes. Those things are engineered to cut holes in the stomachs of pests. AND IT DOES THE SAME THING TO YOUR STOMACH! And then it gives you auto-immune diseases like celiac disease. That's where you can't have gluten (wheat, rye, barley). In fact GMOs should be banned. Not all of them, but the harmful ones at least. I'm all up for long-life apples.

EDIT: Even if they weren't bad, they should be labeled because you should have the freedom to know what you're putting into your body.

I really don't think people need to know. I wouldn't object to maybe it being subtly labeled on the back of a package with all the other ingredients as a passive acknowledgement, but certainly not as any type of forced warning.

Edit: Refer to previous post for justification. I'm not going to fight over semantics.

It's no different than what we consider to be 'natural', so I really don't think people need to know. I wouldn't object to maybe it being subtly labeled on the back of a package with all the other ingredients as a passive acknowledgement, but certainly not as any type of forced warning.

"Natural" and "organic" are two very different words for two very different things. King cobra venom is  "natural". And you can put the word "natural" on any food, there are no regulations on that. But, to put the word "organic" in it, you need to have certain government approval to make sure there are no pesticides or GMOs in it.

Which is why a lot of companies that are trying to tap into the market for organic foods are using deceptive practices by labeling foods which do not fit those standards as "natural" even though many of them do in fact have GMO's in them and are were treated with pesticides. Of course some companies are going so far as to use the "organic" label in those situations. A lot of companies want the market of the people concerned about this but still want to make the same kind of short cuts which is easy with deceptive labeling combined with insane mark ups of their so called "natural" products which in many cases are the same exact thing as the "mainstream" brands except with a different brand name and label.

I definitely want to know what is in the food I buy, whether GMO's or whatever else.  Think that is my right to expect particularly when it is supposed to be "fresh" food.  I'd also like to know whether there are pesticides that have been used and what they are.  The more information the better.
