Now with that over with lets get on to the topic, I've been following this game called "Hatred" a bit and have seen the trailers and the like, however it was just brought back to my attention and I wanted to get the thoughts of everyone on the forums as Gamespot comments are quite pitiful.

For those who don't know much about this game let me grab an excerpt from the developers site detailing what the game is as well as the trailer for it:

"Hatred is an isometric shooter with disturbing atmosphere of mass killing, where player takes the role of a cold blood antagonist, who is full of hatred for humanity. It's a horror, but here YOU are the villain. Wander the outskirts of New York State, seek for victims on seven free-roam levels. Fight against law enforcement and take a journey into the antagonist's hateful mind. Gather equipment of the dead ‘human shields’ to spread Armageddon upon society. Destroy everything on your way of hunt and fight back when it's disturbed..."

My short opinion on the game without going into the reasons why is that I think the game is sickening despite my love for grimdark media, but I do not believe it should cease development, in fact the current model is great, in North America it is to be labeled AO so that it will be difficult to obtain which is perfectly fine by me, this is just my short answer to it and may elaborate on my feelings more. What are your thoughts on the game and if you may play it?

I feel like this game is just emo fodder.

"OH MY GOD I HATE EVERYTHING BECAUSE REASONS SO NOW IMMA SHOOT THINGS"

The fact that it's isometric and trying to be taken seriously is laughable. There wouldn't be enough detail on the screen to even see most of the brutality promised in the game and it just comes across as a cheap money grab. It's trying to be edgy but it's not really succeeding.

I'll probably play it at some point when it's cheap but I don't expect it to be any better than Dead Nation which took the same approach.

Can't you go on a mass-killing rampage in any GTA game aswell? And slaughter hundreds of innocent civilians? I don't quite understand why this game is getting such a backlash where people are downright trying to BAN the game.

Well there is the "Killcams" that bring you in very close to the action despite it being an above view, however I understand what you mean.

Yea you can, one of the main arguments that is used is that, a lot of what I've seen though is the context, GTA doesn't have you going out and mass murdering for the hell of it unless you want to, it is entirely up to the player. As for Hatred, the sole purpose is to slaughter as many innocents as you can in a brutal fashion, you aren't given a choice like in a game like GTA. Though it is a very subjective argument as one could say killing is killing and just because GTA doesn't push you to do it doesn't mean it isn't just as disturbing. One of the things that bothers me the most about this game is the timing in which this is being made, what this would do is hand ammunition to groups who may wish to impose restrictions as well as attack the game industry, if this were put on US national news right now how might the reactions be? With so many shootings in real life this would damage the industry heavily, it is just a ticking timebomb and once somebody decides to use this as a weapon, well we will be seeing quite a few changes, at least in the US.

I dislike it. It looks like it wants to be disturbing for the sake of being disturbing. For the sake of "bad publicity is still publicity".

Games like Mortal Kombat had depth besides the controversial elements. Promotional videos for MK show off how the game was made. The tech that went into creating the realistic graphics.

Hatred's trailer just seemed to me like "look how disturbing I am. Talk about me".

That, to me, is cheap and stupid.

The game looks like Smash TV, a game that was released years ago.

You can be controversial without being tacky.

Hatred is tacky.

My general opinion of Hatred, in a nutshell:

Its just a dumb game trying too hard to be super edgy. I'm not going to tell them that they can't make that game, but I wish they didn't. Its clear that their only motivation was to create a controversy (mission accomplished, I guess), and the video game medium has enough of that already.

Sadly, it will probably sell very well precisely because of the theme, in much the same way Grand Theft Auto does.

I can only hope it is enough catharsis for some to prevent them from actually taking an assault rifle into a public place.

I agree, some games are able to do controversial well enough. Some may disagree with this, but tbh I think the "No Russian" mission in COD MW2 was a great example of how to be controversial yet let it have meaning. You may be killing civilians, but it was a critical story element that presented more than the mindless killing an outside observer may see in it. I dislike COD as a whole, but I think Infinity Ward did great work handling a mission like that.

This isn't the first game out there where you can kill people. One of the most popular games of all time is Call Of Duty. What do you do in that game? You kill people. Sure, the story mode is supposed to be like wars where they're killing for a logical reason, most people play it for the online multiplayer. In there, the objective is literally just to kill people. There's also movies out there where crazy murders and stuff happen. I don't see why everyone is losing their minds over this. At the end of the day, it's just a video game. It's just something made out of code that can be displayed on a screen. Just my 2 cents.

If I wanted to play an edgy gun-toting badass I'd just play The Darkness.

I seriously can't look at this game without thinking the main character's a knock-off Jackie Estacado.

Looks it(at least TD1s Jackie, when the second game become more comic-bookish they re-tooled him into more of a cultured badass in a nice suit with a more stylish haircut and less angst)

It's 2edgy4me bullshit that's aiming for shock-value but they have a right to make it.

I like to think of the "hero" as Shinobu Sensui's dumbass brother with none of the character development, justifications for his mindset, complexity, intelligence or depth that makes a well written misanthropic character interesting.

Studies have been done that show there is no link between violent video games and violent behavior.

I mean, guys like Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy didn't play violent video games, yet the things they did are likely far worse than what you'll see in Hatred.

So I don't care. I'm probably not gonna get it because I have a weak stomach, but I'm not gonna look down on you if you like it.

They have every right to make and sell this game.

However, that doesn't stop it from being a boring, stupid, childish shooter with no original bones in its body.

This game should not exist, and people should not have the right to make shit like this. This isn't what freedom of speech is supposed to be. Freedom of speech was invented to protect people from actual oppression, like the government killing you and your family if you spoke out openly against it or didn't practice a certain religion.

These days, anything anyone shits out their ass is considered sacred art that should be protected by constitutional rights. This is fucking insane.

Now, I'm pretty hypocritical to be saying this, because I watch violent shit all the time and I listen to violent gangster rap all the time. I'm so desensitized these days that this game doesn't disturb me much at all on an emotional level. I'm not even remotely surprised that this exists, and I've seen far worse. But logically, and ethically, I think this is repulsive.

Many video games include killing, but there's a line between the kind of killing you see in most games even at the mature level (barring shit like GTA) and the kind of killing you see in this game. It's all about context. If anyone gives a shit about civilization and preserving it, and subsequently trying to forge a brighter and less violent/insane future for our children, that line should not be crossed.

The fact that the people who made this game are retarded, apathetic and antisocial enough to release this after all the recent shootings is horrific as well.

Thread is being reopened, as a reminder please be sure not to link to the trailer or any other NSFW materials from this game.  This is an AO and highly inappropriate game and any content posted about it should be appropriate for all audiences.
