Well, I do like Kota Ibushi. :ooh:

Well boy howdy do I have some news for you.

Post image

My boy has done it again! First to make the finals three years straight and only the third person to ever win the G1 in back to back years.

So check it out. Statistics from this past G1.

Congratulations to "The Ace of New Japan" Kota Ibushi!

Is Kota eligible the top prize in NJPW before or is he not a part of that particular division?

That's still Tanahashi's title. Even Ibushi would tell you so.

And eligible? What you mean?

You know.

Some wrestlers don't compete for certain championships because they are "in" the mid card or the tag team bracket/division and are focusing

on earning that gold.

Pretty sure that by not only competing in but winning the G1, twice, in a row, that Ibushi is eligible.

But overall, no wrestler will forsake a shot at the greatest prize in wrestling, even if they're focus is on a different division.

I'm going by WWE logic, where unless they have something BIG planned for you you are usually stuck in a specific spot on the card for

your entire career.

Thankfully, NJPW is a meritocracy. Ibushi isn't a NJPW guy and neither was Sanada, but both impressed enough. The apocalypse currently sucks but it has given New Japan's stacked roster opportunities and they've capitalized. Yoshi-Hashi is finally motivated, having some great matches and won his first belt. Kanemaru and Despy stepped up in singles action and are once again Jr. tag champs. When El Phantasmo couldn't fly back in, Ishimori stepped up as Bullet Club's junior ace and earned his second junior heavyweight championship. Yujiro... is also there!

So no, unlike WWE you will be given a chance to advance, but you damn well better impress.

They'd still push you in WWE even if you don't impress though. I'm looking at you pre-heel turn Roman Reigns.

He did impress though. The one person whose opinion matters.

NO! OF COURSE NOT!

I do think that whole storyline was ridiculous in a bad way, though.

Ridiculous is putting it generously.

Good thing i wasn't a fully committed fan back then or else I would've just dropped wrestling like a bad habit.

Wrestling is something I can't seem to give up no matter how ridiculous it gets.

It's because you keep hoping something better will come along and you watch just to witness that moment. It's a hard cycle to break. Time does the work for you and you just get burned out. You have less and less time to spend and WWE wants to take more and more of it.

Had I stayed a casual fan and not discovered wrestling outside the WWE bubble, I may have quit entirely by '09-10. Little things like discovering Impact on Spike, hearing about all my then favorites in WWE coming from a place called ROH, helped me take the next step.

Now I'm still a wrestling fan and haven't watched WWE in 6 months. Haven't bought the network in 18. Haven't been to a live show in 28. Will probably never go to another live show unless it's on the DB retirement tour.

I can't remember the last time I stayed and watched wrestling on television, TBH. This isn't just a WWE thing this applies to AEW as well.

I haven't watched WWE on TV since WrestleMania 2020 week and now that I know who all of their potential call-ups are that excitement is gone for me, too.

Well, at least we have plenty an alternative. Best we can do as watch the recaps and reviews of WWE for the car wreck it is and use our time wisely to enjoy the good. The G1 just wrapped up. Impact BFG is tonight. ROH has been going in a new direction with their Pure title re-tournament, so I may have to check that out. And of course, AEW.

(Probably) Unpopular opinion: I feel like HIAC has become an outdated concept since they stopped using color to make things more brutal. :sealed:

Every stip based show is dated. No one gives a frick anymore. Cell matches are not even brutal. You're not alone in thinking that.

It's them copying lethal lockdown and war games. Granted, Bailey/Sasha and Jay/Roman warrant it for once, but literally nothing else.

The original TLC matches were good because they were new and fresh at the time (Kinda like classic Ultimate X matches.),

but now every time I see a big move I feel "meh" to it because I feel like I've already seen everything those high risk matches have to offer.

Overexposure. They rely too heavily on stunts. We know this because Njpw and Roh don't need that madness to have big moments. It boils down to laziness, artificially making moments.
