Need some recommendations for some good music making softwares

Hmm, so I finally decided to give the music part of the fandom a shot too, having experienced in both the art and the writing parts of the fandom. But I don't know where to start, and getting a music making software is probably one of the first things I want to do.

Fellow composers, do you have any good music making softwares for recommendation? I would list my specific requirements here.

- The ability to generate both orchestral and electronic music.

- The ability to import music from external sources (since I'm most likely gonna start with remixes first)

I would hope it's free but if there is really no other choice I'm fine to cough up a few bucks for one.

Anyways, hope someone could give a newbie some tips and such. ^.^

All professional DAWs allow you to import files.

If you're talking about making music just with your computer, and not recording anything, I can suggest a couple options:

  • Magix Music Maker - It's relatively inexpensive, and is a fantastic piece of software. Sometimes you can get it for sale in bundles with extra soundpacks.
  • Apple Logic Pro - One of the top profressional DAWs, most studios have at least one computer with this on it. Downside is you have to have a Mac to run it, and it's very expensive.
  • Fruity Loops (FL Studio) - A very popular choice, I've never used it. It's also very pricey.
  • Avid Pro Tools - The number one Digital Audio Workstation in the industry, every studio uses it. Unfortunately, Pro Tools has passed its heyday and is on a decline, along with the company that makes it.
  • Ableton Live - This one is definitely more complex than the other options, but a free version often comes with pro audio gear. This is the DAW that I use the most, and it's most commonly used as a controller for synthesizers and other MIDI instruments. Great if you have a computer with fast RAM and a MIDI keyboard.

I hope this helped! Of course, as a musician, music student, and music teacher, I would encourage you to learn about music theory before you get started (if you haven't already learned about it), as that makes a great difference between awesome music and so-so music.

I use FL Studio to make my music.

I've also used REAPER, it's nice cause it's practically free. It has no built in midi or pattern arrangers like FL studio though.

Garage Band for mac is basiacally equal to FL Studio. Maybe superior for orchestral music, inferior for EDM or electronic.

Mixcraft is ONLY good for mixing tracks and loops. It's nice because it's lightweight and it auto-transposes samples into your song key FOR you. So awesome. But thats all it's good for so unless you want to be a music crafter instead of a music maker, stay away.

FL Studio's expensive as hell... but IMO it's probably the best one out there. The problem is that the real cost isnt just the software, it's the individual plugins you buy to make the really good stuff.

Native Instruments Kontakt is industry leading standard for orchestral bits, NI Massive and NI Razor have unparallelled synths, but each of those three are like 200-300$ EACH.

Unfortunately the good stuff isnt gonna come cheap u.u

Of course theres always the bay. Not that I'd encourage that, cause the software is well worth the price if youre serious about music and KNOW youre gonna use the heck out of it
