Maybe Equestria didn't always have Alicorn princesses and before Celestia and Luna became the rulers of Equestria you had these stuck up unicorns from canterlot.

 

So when Luna and Celestia came along they adopted all the royal families as their 'children'.

I always assumed he (or more probably one of his ancestors) was adopted. Like isn't Cadence related to Celestia via adoption as well?

Lauren intended for him to be related to them through their mother, if I recall. But since the show is under different management now, the current staff could have an entirely different take. He could just be "adopted" in a similar sense to Cadance and be a descendant off a royal unicorn bloodline like Princess Platinum's.
