I personally don't; she's my favorite character in the show, but I'm pretty certain that there are a few people out there who hate her. I personally don't agree with their reasoning when it revolves around her ascension to alicornhood though. While Magical Mystery Cure was a little fast paced; I don't think it was rushed. Also, I haven't noticed any changes in her character, so it's all good for me.

That's natural story progression. While the actual decision to make Twilight an Alicorn probably came from Hasbro to sell toys, it was completely foreshadowed even in season one. Celestia outright stated that she sent Twilight to Ponyville to find the Elements of Harmony because she knew that Twilight would embody the Element of Magic, so that they could free Luna from Nightmare Moon. While The Crystal Empire episodes reinforce this, I concede that they were probably written with the specific intent for making Twilight an Alicorn for Hasbro. But that doesn't change the fact that right from the very beginning, Twilight was meant for much more than being a regular Unicorn.

 

Uh, right from the beginning, Twilight could've easily been described by others as "having all the answers". I speak from personal experience, I know exactly what that's like because like Twilight, I'm a savant for mostly useless information. When you can churn out random bits of information, you will be seen as having all the answers. But it wasn't without merit, Twilight has shown herself to be exceptionally knowledgeable and capable of problem-solving. She easily understood the function of a device that's meant to be an MRI machine and a brainwave reader. She's able to prattle off the square root of multi-digit numbers. She's able to comprehend and build a device that harnesses the forces of formally theoretical inter-dimensional quantum physics. Twilight Sparkle is, and always has been a fucking genius.

This seems like a very "end of Season 3/start of Season 4" topic.  I mean, I'm sure there's people out there in general who don't like Twilight or the fact that she's a princess, but if you're talking general worry about the whole concept of Twilight being a princess across a large portion of the fandom, I think that most of those fears or reservations had died down by the end of Season 4.  I myself think it's been a very natural progression for Twilight since the end of Season 3, and I love what the writers have done with her character in general throughout the show's entire run.

And does there exist any pony greater than Twilight? I certainly think not. She clearly has no equal, not even in Celestia, who has been constantly knocked down so that she can look better. Her friends truly do look like immature children in comparison, and they're clearly never going to accomplish anything close to what she's accomplished, so there's absolutely no way I can ever see any of them as superior to Twilight.  

 

So...perhaps I can try the alternative for a while.

Are we once again going to beaten over the head again with the lecture that Twilight is this "Perfect" and "Flawless" "Mary-Sue" Alicorn that has been torn apart and disproved time and time again in every thread it's brought into?! Dude, let it go man! Stop trying to pass this around as fact, it's getting annoying! Many people have torn the arguments apart over and over and over again and yet you keep ignoring it and grasping at straws in a poor attempt to convince people your right! Every single thread that's about Twilight you come in, bring in this broken argument only to be called out and when you finally get backed into a corner you bring out posts like this which shows you have no argument left and are just going "la la la la la not listening"! Even in threads that AREN'T about Twilight, you constantly bring this up! Seriously enough! I don't mean to be a backseat moderator but someone had to say it! It's annoying! A lot of us are just tired of seeing this!

 

And even if you were right (in which Prince Firemane has proved otherwise) that time is over as of Season 5 as Princess Twilight Sparkle, Savior of Equestria, Best Student, Vanquisher of Super Villains, Bringer of Unlimited Rice Pudding, etc. was beaten by a UNICORN! A SIMPLE ORDINARY UNICORN! And on top of that she had to be saved by flippin' FLUTTERSHY and four complete strangers! Yes, you can say that "it was her idea to get Fluttershy out" but you'd just be grasping at straws since as soon as she was out, timid, ol' Flutters was on her own at that point! It was Fluttershy who found out Starlight Glimmer's secret about her cutie mark, it was Fluttershy who threw the bucket of water, it was Fluttershy who exposed the fraud and it was Fluttershy that sparked the revolution! FLUTTERSHY IS NOW THE TOPPLER OF PSEUDO-EGALITARIAN REGIMES! Thank the writers for this episode and finally putting an end to these tired debates!

The only Twilight I think that might be disliked is the fragile and weak Equestria Girls version that is basically Twilight forcibly stripped down of her character qualities and made more vulnerable all for the story plot.

Yes. I despise Twilight. I absolutely think she is the worst of the mane six, and has gone downhill to the point where I groan when she enters a scene.

That being said, prior to S3, I actually had her ranked as Number 2 of my ponies. She had alot of snark to her, she was faillible and often set up for humerous situations due to this (not unlike dash or rarity), and she was just all around a good pony.
I specifically would often think about the MANY things that less talented writers would do with a character like her, building a character up as being nigh unfallible or lavishing constant specialities on them more or less making them the chosen one from birth. the fact that they avoided making Twilight too perfect or lavishing too much attention on her made her very likeable and relateable.


THEN season 3 happened and McCarthy seems to have put the train full speed towards terribleville, because Twilight's had all her previous good qualities vaccuumed out and replaced with her being a perfect paragon who NEVER does any wrong and is always flawless (from a morality perspective), while pretty much making everything revolve around her as a blackhole sue.



She's had all her good qualities replaced with terrible blandness while turning her into wesley Crusher. Her ONLY "Flaw" now is that she wangst about how she's not good enough or that she doesn't have a place in the world, ect., which gets really grating when she's not actually going to grow or develop as a character, the episode is just going to end with "Twilight learned that she IS that awesome and isn't sad anymore!".

Add in the fact that the constant focus on her has robbed the others of having any distinction or focus at all and... yeah, I don't like her anymore. Which is really sad because I know how good she USED to be and the fact that she's been ruined so thouroughly makes me really sad. Its like seeing a loved one turned into a zombie or something.

Ironically, the one thing I'm looking forward to with the EQG franchise is the opportunity to have human twilight's personality rolled back to S1 Twilight without all the terribleness she's accumulated from S3 onward.

It would help differentiate SS and Human twilight in dynamics for the group too.
